    I am watching the first season on dvd

    I picked up a comic that said Beast Wars on it and it was fucking incomprehensible

    Not exactly.

    In the season 2 finale, Megatron finds the arc. He breaks into it and totals Optimus Prime who is still in stasis after all of them crash-landed on earth a couple million years ago.

    At the start of season 3, Optimus Primal takes Prime's spark to keep it safe until they can fix him. After the deed is done, he puts the Spark back and Prime wakes up for a moment, then goes back into stasis.

    Okay now pay attention because this is what Ben Yee does to transformers and it hurts my soul to repeat it.


    IDW decided to do a Beast wars sequel. Simon Furman was on board but wanted a fresh cast.
    They hire Ben Yee - the fanboy that would put CAD fans to shame to be a consultant and help choose this cast and create a fitting backstory.

    Ben decides " Hey we should make all the BW toys even the japan only ones into real characters! Even the repaints! "

    Simon Furman is like "As long as I can use Grimlock I'm good."

    So IDW's editorial staff allows them to just pack in as many awful BW molds as they can into three comics.
    I suspect this is because they thought Ben was indicative of an average TF fan.

    As you can imagine it did not work well. The actual comic was rushed and the characters were pretty shallow. Unless you had an encylopedic knowledge of shitty BW molds you had no clue who was who or why three guys with identical beast and robot modes were running around.


    Then they released the character book because they realized they needed to explain everything.

    That however is a story for another time.

    I hated the CGI on this show. Something about the way it was rendered was physically painful to my eyes, so I didn't watch much of it.

    Probably sucked.

    Unfortunately, what came after was total garbage.
