"NSFW spoiler" usage

DefenderDefender Registered User regular
I wouldn't call this a bug, but it could be a "user issue," so I hope this is the right place for it.

People are putting NSFW images inside of spoiler tags. In some browsers, the image doesn't download until the spoiler is opened, so "WARNING: NSFW" can be written right above it and it's basically fine, just like having "WARNING: NSFW" written right before a link to a questionable site. However, many browsers, such as FireFox, reportedly download the image in advance, so people at work can still get in trouble if there's any kind of image-download-monitoring going on (and I have worked at three different companies in the last ten years which actively monitored that kind of thing).

I apologize if this has already been addressed, but it seems like it could save some people from getting in trouble and I don't see a rule addressing it.

Why not have a NSFW spoiler I had to put warnings all over the link I did just to make sure you were not clicking it
but I agree we need something to flag it a or prevent NSFW spoilers

Really, the spoiler tag isn't good for NSFW stuff, because it's still loaded, which means it shows up on your logs.

    Linking is for NSFW stuff.

It would be possible to re-work spoilers so they loaded on demand in all browsers, but it seems like a lot of trouble when a link could just be used instead.

Yeah, you can't use the spoiler tag for something NSFW. You have to link. There isn't going to be a special NSFW spoiler tag, because in the end, you aren't supposed to be posting that kind of thing in the first place.

I see tons of spoilered NSFW stuff in G&T all the time, quite often outta nowhere in the middle of an otherwise-normal thread. It always seems to go unnoticed despite being an problem. I take it I should be reporting such instances?

Yup, that will bring it to the attention of a moderator who isn't browsing G+T. I am pretty sure a NSFW image is killable by any mod not just the mod that works that forum in question. (Even Mods who never wear their mod tag.)

Not to mention, this isn't the best site if you're working somewhere that actively monitors this kind of thing and is critical about it.

As a suggestion an old forum I went to used to have not safe for work tags.

Basically you'd do something like [NSFW]www. website that isn't too safe for work .com[/NSFW]

It would then show up as NSFW and if you clicked on it you'd get a pop up window warning you that you could be viewing something that is possibly not safe for work and you had a choice of OK or Cancel to actually view the page.

considering NSFW isn't really allowed here, it shouldn't have to be programmed in. That would mainly give people a reason to post more things that shouldn't be allowed in the first place.

Rule wise, I think spoiler tags should be judged as if the spoiler tag isn't there at all. Posting a NSFW image inline is still posting one, spoiler or not.

Pretty sure that posting NSFW images behind spoiler tags is just as bad of an offense as posting the same thing inline.

Pretty sure that posting NSFW images behind spoiler tags is just as bad of an offense as posting the same thing inline.

It is as far as I'm aware. From what I understand, the Not Suitable For Work issue is less one of lolpron appearing on your screen and your colleagues seeing it and more one of an automatic traffic monitoring system flagging your work station loading the image directly.

So in most cases, if you're going to get sacked for an inline image in a thread, you're going to get sacked for a spoilered image in a thread.

We are constantly reminded of this and as far as I can understand, the rule of not posting NSFW images extends to posting them in spoiler tags. The issue is really one of ignorant posters and the solution is reporting and infracting/banning offenders.

I think people being responsible and saying 'NSFW' prior to a link is the best way to go about this.

I don't think you guys are getting it

Posting a NSFW image inline and posting one in img tags inside of a spoiler is the exact same thing

Some browsers load the image prior to you physically clicking the spoiler, and then simply display the image when the spoiler is clicked. It's already there, loaded, on your computer, through your internet connection, which is monitored by your boss. So even though you didn't click that spoiler and see that image, you can still get in trouble at work since someone posted horseporn.jpg inside of a spoiler

the only acceptable way to post NSFW images is to label it NSFW and link it, like this

    NSFW: http://website/hello.jpg

but that is only if it's slightly NSFW, as it's never okay to post pornography or shock images

and we're never going to implement NSFW tags because there are far more important things to do with the forum software than adding unnecessary tags

It's more that it covers retards that don't understand the images loading in spoilers.

So they stick it in a spoiler because you can't see it (or so THEY think). If they had something that they could explicitly use for this task they would more likely use that.

Just have a NSWF Image button that when they press it they get instabanned.

    I do.

But why don't people who post images simply not post NSFW images? That seems like a much better solution to me.

Yeah, this isn't a porn forum. There's no reason it shouldn't be safe for work viewing.
