    So, right, I'm trying to figure this out... the Big-Oh of this:
    If I have N people in a room all shake hands with each other, assuming only 2 people can shake hands at once:
    Then, let's see, it would take how many handshakes... so, lets see
    for example n=5

    then i'd have these pairs
    1-2
    1-3
    1-4
    1-5

    2-3
    2-4
    2-5

    3-4
    3-5

    4-5

    so that's like 1+2+3+4 = 10 for n = 5
    so 6 would be 1+2+3+4+5+6 = 16 for n = 6
    23 for n = 7

    which is a bit less than n^2/2
    so it would be O(N^2), correct??!?!

    but then how might I explain how I got to this answer?!

    I don't actually try to change anyone's mind regarding a religion. I interpret what they are saying in terms of more helpful practical stuff, but if they want to believe in a god I will take no action. I just seethe.
    Nobody is going to care what I say about it on here though, or be convinced by me. It's too impersonal for something like that.

    Well, you may not realize it, I honestly don't know. But they can tell. You may not consciously reject them as people because of their faith, but if you honestly feel that strongly about it there's no way it doesn't influence your actions on some level.

    Extreme beliefs inevitably lead to extreme positions, and sometimes to extreme actions, and a country full of extremists doesn't get people like Barack Obama. They get people like George Bush or Richard Dawkins.

    Wait, it was supposed to be stuff that changed our lives? What's the criteria for this? I just listed an author who writes books that I enjoy reading quite a bit.

    I give off an aura that I consciously reject people I like, I've long since given up trying to control my outside emotional projection considering I have enough trouble trying to control my internal. To me it's like trying to work one of those steam punk mechas from inside the cockpit when you don't know how all the little dials have to be set to get :) and get :| or :( instead.

    My gf is always wondering if I'm angry with her and I'm not, I'm genuinely not, but the dial is stuck on frown and raised voice from interacting with, say, an irritating assignment or something, and i can't work out how to stop it before talking.

    I absolutely get your point but I pretty much just treat any stranger with a ready smile and a canned soothing acceptance regardless of what opinion they express.

    If N people shake the hands of N people, You'd have N * N people shaking hands. But because A shaking B's hand is the same as B shaking A's hand, everything is duplicate, so the total amount of of handshakes is N*N/2

    Uh Shaz let me take a stab at this

    so you have five entities, and you want to investigate how many unique pairings

    the number of non-unique pairings would be n^2, so wouldn't the number of non-unique pairings for groupings of x=2 be uhm

    n-1 + n-2 + n-3 + n-4 + n-5 ... for all non-zero positive values

    4 + 3 + 2 + 1

    so isn't it just a sigma notation?
