Right now I'm reading Diablo Cody's memoir Candy Girl, because it was free and I'm not in the mood to read about existential terror and man's inhumanity to man.

I saw a picture of Diablo Cody the other day
I'd hit it
I don't want to see Juno, but I'd hit it
I started reading Persepolis a few days ago. I like it, makes me want to see the movie.
Thsi past year, my college chose Persepolis as the book it would ask incoming freshmen to read and discuss at the beginning of the next year. The student newspaper then ran an editorial about how the program was getting dumbed down and Persepolis wasn't a real book b/c it's a comic book.
I wrote an angry letter to the editor that I'm sure everyone ignored when it ran.

The only book on that list I agree with is basically anything written by Jane Austen.
The rest of those are pretty awesome and it sounds to me like that guy just wants to read Dan Brown.
I didn't finish the Silmarrillion only because it was in my school's library and I read it during breaks and when I got close to the end it was always on loan to someone else so I had no way to finish it.
I really liked it, though. It wasn't really a storybook, more of a tome of Middle Earth history.

I guess that's why Joyce seemed to quit halfway through, too.

That's why I hated it, to be honest. If I had known beforehand it was going to be a description of how the elves went to this place and formed a new village or whatever the fuck, I wouldn't have read it. But I see the movies, and I think "wow high adventure!"

I hadn't read any fantasy in ages, and I kept hearing how great A Song of Ice and Fire series is so I picked up the first book and read it cover to cover over a weekend, then went and bought the second book.
It's pretty great, but I can't talk about it in the Writer's Block because the thread is spoiler tastic. The second book has been as good as the first for the most part.
Poor Arya, she just gets shit on and shit on and shit on.

currently reading The Turnaround, by George Pelecanos. damn do i love that man's writing.
Also debating whether i should be productive and head out to DC this weekend for the National Book Festival. I mean, Neil Gaiman's gonna be there! and Brad Metzler! umm, and RL Stine?

Hurr hurr
No, Joyce was pretty clever with what he tried to do with that book. I think he took it way past the point of decency and I'm pretty sure in the back of his head, he was laughing about the pain he was going to put people through, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good and entertaining at parts.
Not a fan of pretty much anything involving Bloom's wife. Just boring.
And Tolkien is awful. Anyone that thinks otherwise is objectively wrong. There is nothing redeemable about Tolkien's writing, I mean other than the fact that we got some wonderful Dragonlance novels out of the deal.

I think I'm going to read Shantaram if I get a chance. Any of you read it? If yes, what do you think of it? If no, how you doing?

Holy shit I thought the main LotR trilogy was boring. I had no idea.
I agree, the first book was the only one I got all the way through.
After about a hundred pages of tennis bullshit, I decided I'd had enough.
Boy, Podly's going to be pissed that Ulysses is on that list.

And boring, and poorly constructed and in archaic English and completely worthless and
