You ever try pronouncing a complicated four-syllable name after a half gallon of vodka? Everything's going to end up at "SSShshsush" at one point.

My name's Tin, after the greatest Croatian poet. It's short for Augustin. The correct way to pronounce it is to draw out the I, so it sounds like "teen".

I used to get a lot of laughs from the Brits in my WoW guild. :/

Well if you can't tell, my name is Phil, I almost never meet any other Phil, so I don't think it is very common.

The only I know pulled a gun on me once because he was mad that the woman he was having an affair with behind his wife's back had slept with me a year before the two of them met.

My name is Anders, which is a relatively common Scandinavian name. Means "man", after "andro", so at least you can be sure I'm packin' heat. No one foreign can pronounce it properly, so it's kind of annoying whenever I have to tell someone what my name is. I guess it's getting a boost due to Battlestar Galactica, but they don't pronounce it properly either :P

I've always wanted a more nordic name. I found out my parents wanted to name me Odin, which would have been so godsdamn metal.

How do you pronounce those irish names?
    Ay-Mur and Sear-Sha

Until I was 5, I lived in Brighton, MA which (at least at the time) had a sizable straight-off-the-boat Irish population. We lived next to three kids within a few years of me with the names Hubert, Atracta (just Tracta usually) and Seamus. When Seamus is the least Irish name in a group.....

Why not go with Lia as a shortening?

When my parents had children, they decided that they didn't want their kids to get stuck with nicknames, so they gave both my sister and I names that couldn't be shortened. It worked out just fine for my sister (Erin). Then when I was born a year and a half later, I was named Kate.

Yeah, Kate. Not Katherine or any variation thereof, not Kathleen or Catelyn. My birth certificate reads "Kate Elizabeth [Lastname]."

So, instead of being given a common nickname - like for instance Kate - I have spent my life explaining to people that no, my name isn't really Katherine, it's just Kate.

(That said, I like Kate, and it suits me. I'm just amused that my parents' intentions went down such a well-paved path).

As for my own children... my grandfather's middle name is Russell, and if it suited any son of mine, I'd like to keep it going. The family name will die with my generation - my grandparents had three children, who produced five grandchildren between them, but only one of the grandkids is male. And he's flamingly gay. Which, you know, we're all completely cool with, but the odds of him siring offspring are pretty goddamned low. So, at least calling my son Russell would let a bit of my grandfather live on. And it's a fine name, on its own merits: dignified in its full version, with a kind of rough easy-going charm to the abbreviated form. Plus I could call him Comrade Ruski.

I also like Elliott, maybe as a middle name, and Arthur (or Artorius, with Artos for short).

I am convinced that our firstborn will be a son; pixels thinks otherwise, but fine, if we have a daughter first, he can worry about naming her <_<

I get a lot of that too. For the longest time as a kid I didn't realize that a lot of people use "guy" in place of "man/dude/friend/etc" like "hey, man, how's it going". I always got freaked out when someone would be like "Hi Guy" or "Hows it going guy". Damn it, my name's on the popular names list. It's Joshua, which is an okay name I guess, though I'm not sure it warrants being on the list. Probably the best thing about it is that people tell me it sounds a heck of a lot different depending on if you keep it the long way or shorten it to Josh.

If I ever have kids, I like the names Zeke (though going with the full, Ezekiel, would be like strapping a permanent 'kick me' sign to my kid') Zoe, Chloe, Edward, Charlotte, and Elisabeth.

My name is Kimberly Suresh. I go by Suresh everywhere except work. My mom met an Indian doctor that was named Suresh and liked it, so I got it. It turns out it's a male name in India, I am female. My mom wanted to name me Suresh Brianne, so Suresh could be first, buy my dad said no. I would've preferred that, as people always want to know why I go by Suresh instead of Kimberly. I just like it better! Gawd!

My brothers name is Jonas, he's 32. It was an unusual name, but I think with the popularity of the Jonas brothers, it might not be for much longer . . .

My name is Brittney. Ugh. Minus the overabundance of misspellings, Britney Spears jokes, and finding out that it simply means a country in France, it's an OK name.

I had planned a ton of names for my children. Aidan, Juliette, Dante, and Wendy. I have more, but I'm keeping them under wraps. Beyond that, they're all going to have two middle names: a Spanish middle name (cause I'm half Puerto Rican) and I thought a Norwegian middle name would be cool because my boyfriend is half Norwegian, but he isn't so keen on the idea.

i used to not like my first and middle names that much (roberto enrique), but i grew to like them. although ever since i was little i've gone by tito. usually i have to explain how my parents went from calling me roberto to calling me tito. i should probably just get business cards with the explanation on them and give them to people if they ask.

my dad wants me to name my first son ramon, since it's a family tradition to name the first male in the family that. i'm not really too down with that, though. however, i think ramona for a girl is a really pretty name. and i really like joaquin for a boy

    Real Life Name:
My name is Brandon (pretty obvious from my user name). My mother named me from a soap opera character. Although I was kinda irritated for a while, but the name Brandon kinda grew on me.

    User Name:
My friend was playing through FFVI and when you name characters there are only 6 spaces allotted. The time came around where he had to name the ninja character of said game. He named that character Brando, then proceeded to leave a series of hilarious messages on my answering machine referring to me as the Brando The Ninja Master; ever since it just kinda stuck.

    Sons Names:
My youngest son's name and the only name my wife and I could agree on. I wanted the name Vincent (which is his middle name, so HAH!). Gabriel is an awesome name though, and I will never complain about it.

The oldest son's name is Christian. I'm not his biological father so I didn't have a hand in naming him, but I have no qualms one way or the other.
