I played the Silent Storm demo and it was a lot of fun to play but was also so difficult. I just ended up playing the little town map, killing all the enemies and then making my own troops shoot at each other from buildings opposite the street.

A defining feature of the RTS genre, at least for me

Is that your units are created through buildings

Which is why I'd disqualify DoW

And why I might disqualify HoMM

That's an odd thing to classify the game on.

I think a better definition would be "Base construction and management." Real-Time Tactical games are similar to turn-based tactical games in that they focus on a squad of units and you don't build bases or collect resources. It's kind of hard to define it that way though, because if X-COM was in real-time, would it be considered and RTS or an RTT?

When you think about it, it's kind of odd what Dune started

Considering war is focused on actual combat and not building shit to make more shit to fight, you'd think base management wouldn't be an inherit trait in most RTSes

DoWII removes construction entirely in favor of an army roster, basically

More true to the game it's based on

    What

First off, no, you train them in a building

Second, that was why I was classifying DoW as more of an RTS than a tactical combat game

    Seriously?

    That's kinda exciting

But I am also unsure of how well it will work out

Especially seeing as the tabletop game is turn based and all so that sort of behavior can actually sorta work

I enjoy the base building in DoW from what I've played of it, since there's several ways to go about it.

Some maps I'll build everything and then some, others I can get by just with a couple squads and maybe an Immolator tank.

And does Dawn of War count? Because the Sisters' Living Saint is the wrath of god(or the Imperium equivalent) given corporeal form.

The multi is also fun, but that unit is pretty much a guaranteed tide-turner.

Unless they're using Necrons, because screw the Necrons(and their teleporting bases).

    Yeah, that's amazingly arbitrary.

RTS games are about resource management and group combat. Whether or not you actually train "troops" at "buildings" is completely irrelevant.

And for that matter, Warcraft 3's Night Elves and Starcraft's Terrans could arguably disqualify those games, since the Terran buildings that produce troops can all move (and thus are vehicles/aircraft in some senses, not "buildings" in the modern sense), and the Night Elves are produced at moving buildings that are also LIVING TREES, and thus, again, not "buildings" in the usual sense.

"Management" is the key thing here. The essence of RTS that separates it from a tactics game is that you manage some type of resource. That's really it. Having to manage a production infrastructure and land/space/real estate is a good resource to add to the mix, but it's not really required.

    Dwarves are great

you use those shield guys to get zone of control and use the riflemen to snipe all the beefy targets

griffins are awesome for capturing and reclaiming bases, and you can manoeuvre them around all your opponent's guys and just shoot straight for his leader

I think some of the most fun to be had in JA2 is going into a sector with a silenced mini-UZI (with laser scope attached to boot) and eliminating every enemy in it without them ever noticing.

The silenced weapons stuff is awesome. But not quite as awesome as the super high-powered sniper rifles in the game, some of which have a range of an entire game map. I've yet to actually make use of all that range, though.

Also, when you make a head explode. So fucking awesome.

Strategy then referring to the way you manage your non-combat resources? Because there is nothing strategic about the troop command. That's all tactical.

Also, there's a rareish russian game called E5.
The combat mechanic is the best, a good mixture of realtime and time based combat (IE every action takes a set amount of seconds, when you press unpause your guy does whatever you told him while the enemies do whatever they do.)

Oh yeah, that's a good one. The translation is horrific, though.

THankfully, the new game, 7.62mm, is supposed to be a little better translated and a lot clearer on what to do.

Did you ever get bombs/traps/mines to work?

I didn't, even after throwing a grenade at a claymore.
