Brody: On Constitutional marriage amendment , are, are you for something like that?
Palin: I am, in my own, state, I have voted along with the vast majority of Alaskans who had the opportunity to vote to amend our Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. I wish on a federal level that that's where we would go because I don't support gay marriage. I'm not going to be out there judging individuals, sitting in a seat of judgment telling what they can and can't do, should and should not do, but I certainly can express my own opinion here and take actions that I believe would be best for traditional marriage and that's casting my votes and speaking up for traditional marriage that, that instrument that it's the foundation of our society is that strong family and that's based on that traditional definition of marriage, so I do support that.
THOSE SENTENCES ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE ARGH.
I honestly am starting to believe that conservatives just can't detect hypocrisy. There's something up with their worldviews where cognitive dissonance is just not that big of a deal to them.
I read this book about Saudi Arabia and the author went on a whole chapter about how all the youths he talked to there had the same problem. One minute, they'd be talking about how much they want to join al-Qaeda, and the next minute they'd brag about their giant porn collection on their computer. It didn't register that those two things do not go together.
I blame religion.

What would the most conservative university be, anyway? I would say Patrick Henry but I'm not well versed on politically-skewed colleges.
I would have thought BYU, but apparently it only ranks 8th according to the Princeton Review...the thing is I dont just go to BYU, I go to BYU Idaho, up here, students talk about BYU Provo like some sort of apostate party school
I have a 15-year-old friend of mine who's a sophomore at BYU Provo, and he changed from hard-line conservative to crazy batshit party line "no military at all, socialism = good" liberal in one year there. It's so strange I can't even fathom it.
I really don't know how this is possible. I mean, this is the school that has an active program trying to dig up ancient Jewish artifacts in the new world, and trying to prove that Native Americans are descended from Jews through genetic testing.
It's bizarre, but my friend's probably going through puberty right now in, of all places to be going through puberty, college, and I seem to remember my puberty years being unbelievably liberal to the point of crazy idealism.
So eh.
Also, my friend is and has been homeschooled most of his life.

And if he's Mormon, which I suspect, he's going through hell right now due to puberty. You'd think a religion founded upon the principle of shagging as many women as you could in the Lord's name would be a little more understanding of teenage hormones. I have never met as many tightly wound young men as I have at Mormon wards.

I'm generally not a passenger on the anti-religion bandwagon, but I think he might have a point. It seems like this level of hypocrisy is most common on subjects that relate to religion (in this case, gay marriage). I think there may be some merit to the idea that creating a somewhat logic-free zone in your brain (religion) leads to the ability to absolutely fail to see obvious hypocrisy, or detect statements that logically make absolutely no sense (like the two mutually-exclusive back-to-back sentences above).
There seem to be other topics where this occurs, of course...for instance, here logically nonsensical statement that determining the cause of global warming is irrelevant when trying to solve the problem. Then again, even that may well relate to religion...when you believe the planet is only a few thousand years old (and climate cycles usually run longer than that) and that it will likely end in your lifetime, I doubt you put a whole lot of logical thought into issues like climate change...it's all talking points for her.
This girl I went to college with, who WAS wicked hot, and then dropped out, and then had twins, and is now pregnant with a THIRD child (new dad though, woo!), just posted THIS on my MySpace.

Subject:
More info on Obama from Amy.
Body:
"This election has me very worried. So many things to consider.About a year ago I would have voted for Obama. I have changed my mind three times since then.I watch all the news channels, jumping from one to another. I must say this drives my husband crazy. But, I feel if you view MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News, you might get some middle ground to work with.About six months ago, I started thinking 'where did the money come from for Obama'. I have four daughters who went to College, and we were middle class, and money was tight. We (including my girls) worked hard and there were lots of student loans.I started looking into Obama's life. Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California. He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. 'Barry' (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan. During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a 'round the world' trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia, next Hyderabad in India, three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family. My question - Where did he get the money for this trip?Nether I, nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where in college. When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York. It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack - not Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia? It's not cheap! to say the least. Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe. After Columbia, he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000 a year.
Why Chicago? Why not New York? He was already living in New York. By 'chance' he met Antoin 'Tony' Rezko, born in Aleppo Syria, and a real estate developer in Chicago. Rezko has been convicted of fraud and bribery this year. Rezko, was named 'Entrepreneur of the Decade' by the Arab-American Business and Professional Association'.About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School. Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School? Where did he get the money for Law School? More student loans? After Law school, he went back to Chicago. Rezko offered him a job, which he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. Guess what? They represented 'Rezar' which is Rezko's firm.
Rezko was one of Obama's first major financial contributors when he ran for office in Chicago. In 2003, Rezko threw an early fund raiser for Obama which Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with 'seed money' for his U.S. Senate race. In 2005, Obama purchased a new home in the Kenwood District of Chicago for $1.65 million (less than asking price). With ALL those Student Loans - Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day Rezko's wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price. The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born Billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama's new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi Auchi many times withRezko. Now, we have Obama running for President. Valerie Jarrett, was Michele Obama's boss. She is now Obama's chief advisor and he does not make any major decisions without talking to her first. Where was Jarrett born? Ready for this? Shiraz, Iran! Do we see a pattern here? Or am I going crazy? On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley advisor to Obama was 'sacked' after the press found out he was having regular contacts with "Hamas', which controls Gaza and is connected with Iran. This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama's visit to Iraq, he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will 'Take care of things'. Oh, and by the way, remember the college roommates that where born in Pakistan? They are in charge of all those 'small' Internet campaign contribution for Obama. Where is that money coming from? The poor and middle class in this country? Or could it be from the Middle East? And the final bit of news. On September 7, 2008, The Washington Times posted a verbal slip that was made on 'This Week' with George Stephanapoulos. Obama on talking about his religion said, 'My Muslim faith'. When questioned, 'he make a mistake'. Some mistake! All of the above information I got on line. If you would like to check it -Wikipedia, encyclopedia, Barack Obama; Tony Rezko; Valerie Jarrett: Daily Times - Obama visited Pakistan in 1981; The Washington Times - September 7, 2008; The Times May 10, 2008.
Now the BIG question - If I found out all this information on my own, why haven't all of our 'intelligent' members of the press been reporting this?A phrase that keeps ringing in my ear - 'Beware of the enemy from within!!!"

Not to break out trend, but, if this were to happen a car with an Obama Sticker/anti mccain sticker, with the words "Terrorist" etched into the car...would we really be having this conversation?
Some people are just idiots, on both sides of the spectrum
If it was a car with an Obama sticker and somebody did that (particularly the 'KKK' part) it might legitimately be considered a hate crime. But mostly just because fo the 'KKK' part. Otherwise it's just politically motivated, but not a hate crime.
As it is, it's just plain old stupid politically-motivated vandalism.
Though I think nowadays that can be classified as terrorism, depending on the circumstances.
Yeah, that map is about the most depressing thing ever. I had no idea it was that bad. I mean, I knew Kerry was a bad candidate but damn.
Again, I'm not sure those counties really change all that much. It's mostly a matter of the turnout between the red/blue counties.
You see, that's why I think we should spend a little time reexamining hate crime laws. 'cause if anybody deserves to go to gitmo, it's hate criminals, and I still can't figure out the difference between hate crime and terrorism.

I think we're on to something here. Call it Magical Thinking (thank you James Randi). When you create the opportunity for yourself to believe things without logical or critical reason to do so, it becomes far easier to apply those standards to other topics. I can't help but think in regards to some religions I particularly do not like due to their obvious craziness (i.e. Scientology) in which the bad more than outweighs any good and the nonsensical is all that it is built on that there is something fundamentally wrong with their member's brains. Like they truly cannot comprehend natural, logical arguments. That, or they have never met a bullshit they can't stomach.
McCain is up in West Virginia so it is probably no longer a swing state.
Well, scratch West Virginia from the swing state list for the time being. Both Public Policy Polling and Mason-Dixon have new polling out in the state, and they give John McCain leads of 8 and 6 points respectively. It's possible that this is one of those areas where McCain's attacks on Barack Obama are having some resonance. It's also possible that the state was never all that close to begin with, and that the ARG poll from two weeks ago that gave Obama a substantial lead was one of those infamous ARG outliers. By no means is the state totally unwinnable for Obama -- and I'd still like to see what, say, Research 2000 or Rasmussen or SurveyUSA have to say about it -- but in all probability, it is pretty far from the tipping point.
It's all going alone with my plan, wherein Nebraska becomes the deciding state since it splits it's electoral votes.
*evil scientist laugh*
Sorry dude, Iowa isn't going to vote for anti-ethanol John McCain. You'll have to find 7 other electoral votes for the old man.
Edit: You can give him Connecticut and all its Joementum.
Except Bush won Iowa last time.
That was a long 4 years ago.
Ack. That map makes me feel... ill.
Yeah. Fucking people having their own opinions. For shame.

Yes, why haven't they indeed.
I like to go in one of two directions, usually:
A) A detailed, point-by-point rebuttal. A carefully-chosen one-liner that, if correctly chosen and perfectly constructed, tears the whole damned thing down in one fell swoop.
This is a time when option B is your best bet. This person seems like they'd just comb through option A, find its weakest point, and make some stupid argument that in their mind invalidates your entire response.
So my response would be something along the lines of "And the Internet has never steered anyone wrong before, right?"

The U.S.A has been an urban country for probably over 100 years. Hell, the Republicans' first election was won by pretty much appealing solely to North-East and Western urban centres.
You see, that's why I think we should spend a little time reexamining hate crime laws. 'cause if anybody deserves to go to gitmo, it's hate criminals, and I still can't figure out the difference between hate crime and terrorism.
Terrorism is intended to intimidate the victims and their community to achieve some goal. Most hate crimes are probably terrorism, but it's possible to just be an asshole without any real goal behind it.

Before we were derailed by David Horsey, we had it as our intention to detail what a criminal act it is that Freaky Flyers lacks Internet play. Oh, I know what you're saying. "Freaky Flyers..." You knit your brow. You've heard that Midway was doing some sort of flying race game, and you have scrupulously avoided any contact with it for fear that its mediocrity might somehow be virulent. I bet Gabe that it would be terrible, and it wasn't, so now I have to fuck a dog. It was a stupid bet, and I should never have agreed to it. But I had no reason to believe that an off-brand flying racer would be enjoyable, or that the parts they meant to be funny actually would be.
When I smarted off about Counter-Strike a few posts ago, wondering aloud why people would still play it and raising dark questions about their heritage, it was (of course) only a matter of time before I began playing it again nightly. I don't know how I expect to be an Internet demagogue when I consistently fail to take my own advice. I've lost my Half-Life again, and I've bought it more times than I can remember, so I wasn't going to do that. Valve's "Steam" content delivery service has CS 1.6 on there, and I had been meaning to check it out anyway, so hey. I'd used it before, a while ago, and it appears to have matured a bit since then. It's nothing you have to pay for at this point - but I'm swiping my card feverishly at the air in anticipation. The concept of buying games that are delivered to me digitally while I chew the ice from my Whiskey Sour is something I have great passion for, and I have never shared the mania that associates a physical object with my Game Experience. I was overjoyed by Stardock's brilliant "Stardock Central" app, which allowed me to download their latest games with such elegance that I check it daily for updates. Also, I believe that it emits an inaudible tone that subverts my will. In any case, try out Steam if you never did, and if you've been out of CS for a few years like I have, just jump back in with both feet. It's like riding a bike while you fire a submachine gun at international police.
I've been sort of sick of Internet Explorer for a while, so I've been spinning the chamber in a deadly game of Browser Roulette. I spent some time with the newest Mozilla, which was fine, though I always did prefer the lighter Firebird. Went back to Opera for a bit, and found it well, but the grim realities of IE's browser hegemony began to set in when I tried to use services like BuyMusic, which I found to be excellent, but if you're not using you some Internet Explorer they're simply not interested in your business. That's when it basically hit me that I didn't want a new browser, not really, I just wanted IE to act more like a piece of modern fucking software. You know, block pop-ups and browse in tabs and do some year 2003 type shit. All I can say is Thank God For Avant Browser, which has brought some welcome sanity to my Internet usage. It's essentially a shell for IE, so you get all the compatibility you miss out on with other software - without sacrificing the sensible additions that browser evolution has wrought.
I certainly hope you haven't mailed me the last couple days, because my Internet only just came back on - if you've tried to correspond, you probably got a whole lot of nothing. I'll turn it back on Thursday morning, when I will be more than happy to talk to you about that pipebomb Jesus told you to send me.

So eh.
Also, my friend is and has been homeschooled most of his life.
You should blame religion.
I actually have gotten more liberal as I've grown out of puberty, but I'm a freak so whatever.
Hey, you know what would be fun? Turning this into a religion thread. Those always go well.
It would be fitting, seeing as Obama's a Muslim.
Not as though that should matter. So says the black general who is obviously supporting him due to race solidarity (not my words, the crazies in the right).
Didn't work too well when the majority of people weren't in those places. Now that a majority is in urban areas and growing every day... bit more viable now.
Oh he is, and he is. It's quite funny actually. But I'm a douchebag so whatever.
Spoilered for length, as they cram the most CRAZY Obama shit I have EVER read into a giant paragraph. I wanted to reply with a cited rebuttal, but mostly all I could come up with was just "Um...no?", so I gave up. If anyone ELSE wants to, feel free and I'll post it back. My only concern was it was like a 'public message' so some fucking STUPID swing state voter may see it, which is why I'd want to rebut, but mostly I'm just hoping that all her friends live in New York too, so this level of stupid won't matter.
Seriously - give this a read. Obama's campaign is being funded by Hamas, because he had college roomates (who PAID Rezko to send him to college!) who are Muslim...?
The best part is the end - "If I was able to find all this online in just a couple hours, why hasn't the mainstream media found it yet?"
Yes, why haven't they indeed.

Yeah. Fucking people having their own opinions. For shame.
No need to apologize for THE TRUTH.
A couple of threads back I posted a response refuting just about everything in this, with several cites. You are welcome to steal it if you can find it, it would be dated 10/9.
Man, when I first saw that I thought that was the current map and I thought that was from current polls. I nearly had a heart attack, then I checked the image name and saw it was from 2004.

I see a horse with a club-foreleg, a fish-tail, a diminutive hindleg, and an erection. I guess that says something about me.

You're all wrong.
When I look at that I see hope.
Why do you have to take away our fun with something we can all agree on?
