No, you can play if you only own the expansion, or if you only own the original. The expansion lets you play Panzer Elite and British, whereas the original lets you play American and Wehrmacht. That info's actually in the OP but don't worry, I'm the only one who read that (because I partially wrote it). Join our Steam group, even if you don't have it on Steam! Weeee. It's good for finding people who play.

I actually did read the OP. It made it clear that the expansion was backwards compatible with the original, but I wasn't sure if the original was compatible with the expansion. Can I play against people that use the expansion armies? Or am I limited to playing against just the Americans and the Wehrmacht?

Anyway, joining the steam group under the name Pious Flea. I'll install the game sometime later today, probably.

Yeah you can play against whoever you want as long as it's not me because I don't want to lose. The only thing the expansion/original game changes is what armies you have available to use and what single playe ryou can play.

Yes. It is forwards compatible, also.

    Awesome, thanks.

And don't worry, playing against me should inflate your ego quite nicely. At this point I probably suck so bad.

I know what you mean I feel so helpless in the early game when they have cars going everywhere and all I have are riflemen, who always seem to lose against PE infantry.

Just get in close to them or stay in green cover if they aren't. Don't engage if you can't win, and focus on capping and cutting them off.

I had map control then a giant blob came out of no where and some how got my M8 killed in about a second :\. Along with all my infantry, now that you mentioned retreat paths in one of your SC's they all like to go all runway model infront of the enemy.

It didn't help he was G43 slowing retreating sqauds. I really should have rammed his Ketten when I look back on it.

so i got the original version of this game and i cannot for the life of me beat the mission where you have to defend the town for 15 minutes. It's like the third mission in. You know the one. It's SO FUCKING HARD. I keep getting to the point where I have like 30 seconds or a minute left, and then it is like "tee-hee, game over again! isn't that funny?" seriously fuck that shit.

any tips for getting past it? i'd like to enjoy the rest of the game.

MG nest on each bridge, AT gun(or 2) per bridge, make sure any leftover airborne have Recoilless Rifles. Lots of sandbags to make sure all your units are in green cover, and mine each bridge as much as you can. The rightmost bridge usually has a detector guy come through and disable all your mines, however.

When they start in with the artillery barrages, move everything back to the Church, set up your mgs and at guns covering all the approaches, and you should be set.

The secret to the American campaign is to have your Riflemen pick up shreks, get them vet, and then never lose them. When they come at you with their tank horde, your shrekked-Riflemen horde from the last mission should be able to win handily. Last time I played that mission, I actually kept the Germans pinned in their spawn points with MGs, Shrekked Vet Riflemen, and a few Anti-Tank guns :P

A few friends of mine recently convinced me to buy CoH. It has a pretty steep learning curve but I still love it and consider it one of the best RTS's of all time. Quick question, on the Tales of Heroes videos, they keep referring to "the forums" that people discuss bugs and strategy on, any idea what forums they were talking about?

Probably GameReplays. There's a link in the OP.

Eastern Kentucky University. It's where you go for your teaching degree in Kentucky.

Also the patch has supposedly gone into its final stage of development. Whatever that means.

Regardless, I say the patch comes in December.

Today the new issue of pcgames arrived at my house; there's a preview about Tales of Valor. There will be a new multiplayer mode where you have to defend a village against the AI. Also there will be some new campaign, the Tiger-Campaign - you'll only control ONE Tiger and maybe some support troops, it'll play like an RTS with action-RPG elements like in Diablo (As you may remember I posted some stuff about the Tiger campaign some time ago, everything just as I predicted it to be ). The Tiger is manned by 4 guys, each of them having individual techniques in 4 different levels; having a higher level for your cannonier allows you to fire explosive rounds. Through different researches you can improve the driving- and firing-attributes of your tank. Things you earned in one mission will be taken to the next mission. In the preview they're also about a system which lets the AI only see what a real tank could see (that would be kinda cool, eh?)
The others new campaigns are planned to take place in normandy and it's not sure if they're going to be like the new tiger campaign or like the old ones. (if I got it right...)
In the review it says NOTHING about new factions, but about an intro taking place in Leningrad. Also they said, that the lead designer didn't want to talk about things like "russia" (not "russians"!) (yet...).
They also said that they won't updated the Essence-Engine in the stand-alone-addon.
More info to follow, have to read the review again (and again, and again and again...)

    Interesting.

EDIT: Ugh...$30 for a new "campaign" and game mode? Forget it.

I guess Relic got upset that TychoCelchuuu was playing with the new Soldiers: Heroes of World War II and wanted to bring him back.

I'm sure they'll do a great job with it since they're a good developer.

Though I fear my acceptance of the duty is in awkward times. What with the patch having been out so long.. creating new ideas and tips is going to be rough.

    Puma/AC spam to win.

    Current state of balance:

PE is horribly broken and anyone who plays them should be beaten and raped by large burly men. It's like Retadins circa 3.0.1 except they've been like this for a whole fucking year. Wehrmacht is reasonably tough with some bad gameplay mechanics (crappy T3, too much reward for losing units).

British on St. Mere Dumont and Langres are about as stupid as PE. On the other hand, they're ludicrously underpowered on Semois and Beaux Lowlands cause of the resource layout. Only way to win as Americans is to strafe down the endless hordes of PGs and listen to scrub noobs QQ about how overpowered it is.

New sides sounded good to me. Bah!

Oh well. Some new game types would certainly help. They've been promised three times now, once for a patch, then for Opposing Fronts, and now, hopefully, we'll get this one for Tales of Valor.

What's funny is that I can use a similar summary to describe how 2v2 Axis teams are getting ridiculous win streaks and win/loss ratios in the current version.

    2xPE
    AC rush/spam
    Marder rush/spam

    PE/Wher
    AC rush/spam
    Medic bunker/AT gun

Fact is that until the phase shifting bullshit is fixed with ACs and Puma, the competitive game is crap. Everyone whines about medic bunker spam but at least medic bunkers don't shift out of space and time to dodge any and all incoming fire.

You aren't going to put me in any place. Only a tool thinks the Whermacht pioneer/weapon crew MP40 buffs coupled with the new and improved* Puma will be anything but bullshit. 1-second arty has nothing on this.

I haven't played Wher since they killed the StuG and I refused to go back to Axis when every half-assed lamer learned how to abuse ACs and medic bunkers. But if the current game goes live there's zero reason to play Allies. I'll micro my ACs and Pumas like shit and it won't matter - nothing will touch them.
