This was a really good week, imo. The ASM and USM annuals were good, ASM was the shit, Iron Fist and Nova kicked ass, and Thor was just poetic in it's awesomeness. Oh, and MAD's book was good too (Contract Solo Missions: Tsumi). I'm really glad I decided to go to the shop this week.
I will say that I created Black Lightning after convincing DC not to publish another "black" super-hero on which they had started work. The Black Bomber was a white bigot who, in times of stress, turned into a black super-hero. This was the result of chemical camouflage experiments he'd taken part in as a soldier in Vietnam. The object of these experiments was to allow our [white] troops to blend into the jungle.
In each of the two completed Black Bomber scripts, the white bigot risks his own life to save another person whom he can't see clearly (in one case, a baby in a stroller) and then reacts in racial slur disgust when he discovers that he risked his life to save a black person. He wasn't aware that he had two identities, but each identity had a girlfriend and the ladies were aware of the change. To add final insult, the Bomber's costume was little more than a glorified basketball uniform.
DC had wanted me to take over writing the book with the third issue. I convinced them to eat the two scripts and let me start over. To paraphrase my arguments...
"Do you REALLY want DC's first black super-hero to be a white bigot?"
Okay, he wasn't precisely their first black super-hero, but I made my point. The Black Bomber stories were deep-sixed and I went to work on my own creation.
I really dug USM annual. BMB can write teen-angst like no other.
My favorite part-

I don't know how Joe Kelley pulled it off (despite reading the fantastic ASM:Extra story) but he's in the process of really turning Hammerhead into something.
He had the sort of presence in this issue that he's never really been able to carry before.
Before it was "hey. look, it's the dumbass supervillian with the giant forehead".
Now, reading this issue, I got the same type of creepy vibe I would from watching No Country for Old Men with Anton Shigurh lurking about.
except apparently Herc is a hydrocephalic or something...the distance between his eyes and the top and bottom of his head are equal. It's really disturbing. The only way it's even reasonable is if the headgear is at literally the top of his head (like a crown) with four inches of hair mounding up out of it.
I'm not complaining about the headgear: I'm complaining about that particular frame, and how it completely breaks with anatomy. Normally, it's fine. Not my style, but at least physically reasonable.
KIRBY/BUSCEMA/SIMONSON/BYRNE IMAGE SPOILERS (spoiled for size):
After posting those, I kinda-sorta agree with what you're saying, I think - you're saying that he's showing too much forehead, right? But I still posted the stuff, because it's all good art.

That was incredibly awesome, yes, but uh
God I hate that character.
To be fair, I get the feeling Giffen kind of hates him too.

By the by, here's an explanation for that scene.

PARKER, YOU'RE FIRED! <-- My comic book podcast! Satan look here!
Great scene though.
I can post scans of Kirby/Buscema that have it drawn just like that, if you'd like. Byrne did the same.
I dare you.
