Would you risk playing mutant-roulette?

I was reading another thread, and it made me think: what if, at a point in your regular adult life, somebody told you they could instantly turn you into a mutant? We're talking Marvel Universe, X-Gene style mutant here.

Now, in the Marvel Universe, mutations take a lot of different forms. Some allow you to remain essentially human in appearance and actions, but with added bonuses. Others will near certainly alienate you from the rest of the human race, by virtue of changing you into something that neither looks, nor acts, like a regular homo sapiens. Of course, a lot of mutations give would give you truly ludicrous powers the likes of which have never been seen before. But still, the chance of great power comes with an equal chance of alienation, and likely being targeted by prejudice, for the rest of your life. Ouch. Hell, you might even just turn out like Beak. Which I'm not sure anyone would really enjoy.

And then there's the effect on your kids. Even if you can live with the potential discrimination you would likely suffer, would you be happy knowing that the mutation could potentially be passed onto your kids, leaving them to suffer for a decision you made? You heartless bastard.

So, weighing up all sides of the argument, would you want to become a mutant, knowing that you have no idea what might happen to you? And what mutation, given your current mentality and physicality, do you feel you'd be likely to go through?

On, pointless discussion!

Even looking at the downside on this one I would totally do it. The only chance you would be shunned for sure would be if your power made you look completely unhuman. The chances of that in the X-universe is relatively small.

As for what mutation I would go through? I would guess something to do with snow and the cold, because thats pretty much all we got around here. But mutations in the x-men are usually pretty random so it's hard to say what someone would end up with.

Yes, damnit. Fuck having an unremarkable life and fuck having kids, for that matter. There's a risk inherent in achieving anything worthwhile anyway, so it's not even that unusual a situation in the first place.

If mutations are based on self-image, though, I'd end up with unpredictable reality warping powers that can only be called upon with intense concentration or during an emotionally charged moment. Perhaps a bit too dangerous, but still worth it.

Ultimately, the thought of ending up a pudgy, middle-aged diabetic living a completely unfulfilling existence and accomplishing nothing of worth is scarier than the thought of being hunted and persecuted anyway.

I would be the only Marvel-style mutant on Earth? I could potentially look like Nightcrawler or worse? No. I have no desire to spend the rest of my life as a persecuted outcast, no matter what kinds of powers I might also obtain.

What if you get turned into a hideously deformed being with a really crap power? That would suck.

If we're talking random mutation, there's a 90% chance of getting a minor power or physical mutation that is, for all intents and purposes, worthless. It's neat, but it doesn't really do anything, and it might make you look like a freak and make you an outcast.

After that, the odds are probably pretty much equal for getting something really good or bad. Your just as likely to mutate into a giant worm that feeds on human flesh as you are into someone that shoots lasery death from their eyes.

All in all, I'd say it's probably not worth it. I'd stick to the radioactive bugs.

    well, sort of

district x did a good job of showing how most mutants are actually total weirdos and the x-folks are generally the jet-setting good-looking white people of the mutant world.

Yeah an awful lot of mutants have to live down in the sewers with marrow. If the stench didn't get me the sheer irritation of her diatribes certainly would.

If we're talkin marvel U I'd get on the phone to latveria and offer to sell the location of mr-make-a-mutant for some sweet doom-related technology. Like an atomic bread machine!

Eh, I'd do it. As long as it wouldn't seriously cripple me, I wouldn't mind. Shit, even if you get a "bad" power like Beast's or Nightcrawler's physical changes, you can still probably get jobs as a movie monster.

    Or a niche porn star.

If I would be the only mutant in our 'regular' universe - of course I'd do it!

Even if one might end up looking like a giant lizard or similar I doubt your family or friends would alienate you (unless they are fundies or such).
Maybe back in the 60s / 70s, but nowadays thanks to comics / TV / movies people wouldn't be all too freaked out.

Basically one of the following would happen :

    1) You end up in some military lab. Better avoid the USA, China, Russia or similar or be good at hiding.
    Worst case scenario.

    2) You end up insanely rich. Even with the most minor power you will still be able to make millions.
Heck, look at Uri Geller. All he does is bend spoons (its a trick) and he's a multi millionair.

My power of changing my skin colour or teleporting up to 10 feet or making water boil beats that easily.

Aslong you aren't flying around or shooting lasers from your hands people won't even think you are really supernatural.
They will think it's a special effect.

I'd definitely go through with it and embody the idea of complete uniqueness! See, there's a push, a trend, if you will, across the nation: people want to be perceived as unique as possible.

Given my current physical and mental states, I'd most likely be able to stick to anything. Take that as you will.

My luck when it comes to random number generators is worse than suck. I wouldn't do it based on that.

Besides I'd rather just get friendly with some military R&D types and get me some nano bots. Healing factor, increased physical strength, change eye/hair/skin/height/etc to your choosing.

Just avoid the grey goo and it's all gravy.

Well yes but in general I think most of the "hanging up the cape" type moments come from heroes who can pass for normal.
The obvious grotesque types seem to be more accepting, even if it does make them bitter and living in the sewers or something.
