It's not true that people hate Québec. I'm from Québec, and people love me.

    Well, some people like me.

Ok, so nobody likes me. But it's not because I'm from Québec.

In my experience, it's false to say that people hate Québec and (or because of) the fact we speak French. If anything, I've had people take a genuine interest in me because they wanted to know about Québec, either as prospective tourists, or to learn in general about a foreign culture and language. And yes, they even like to learn about the sovereignist debate, its roots and motivations, what we hope to gain, and so on.

I find what really annoys people is the constant preaching and bitching about sovereignty. Not learning about it, as I've said before, but listening to the whining, the empty go-to arguments like "c'est la faute à Ottawa" or "le Canada nous fourre", all that crap. They're sick of hearing about it. And so am I, frankly. One of the most positive aspects of having moved out of the province is that I barely ever hear about sovereignty anymore.

I'm a US citizen, I've lived in Florida for almost 21 years, and I've had a lot of experience with French Canadians, there was a small community in my city. One of my good friends from High School was a French Canadian and his father is my dentist. My father and his watch hockey together all the time. They are probably some of the nicest, most polite people I have ever met to the point where it is somewhat suspicious.

No one I know hates Quebec for speaking French. I hate that your province uses the Not-Withstanding Clause in the Charter of Rights to enforce unequal language rights and remove rights from a minority. If any other province did to French Canadians what Quebec does to non-francophones, they'd be pilloried from coast to coast in the media, and justly so.

Also, the constant "should I stay or should I go" gets on some people's nerves.

But hatred for speaking French? Nah. No one gives a rats ass Contrary to what the paranoid members of the various sovereignty parties might have you think, the rest of the country isn't planning to be in ur province, oppressing ur culture.

The only thing I don't like about the Quebecois speaking French is that I therefore had to learn it in school. Hundreds of hours spent in a classroom and I can only carry the most basic of conversations (Ou est la toilette? and so forth.)

    RE: Quebec language laws.

As an anglophone here in Quebec, I don't mind the language laws. I like that all the signs and billboards are in French. It gives the city a nice flavour and it's not that fucking hard to learn a second language anyway, especially since most people in the area speak it.

Immigrants having to send their kids to French schools instead of having the choice of English ones is slightly less defendable, but I honestly wish that I'd gone to French elementary school, so I'd be equally capable in French and English. It's good for you in every conceivable way to learn a second language, and it's not emotionally scarring or anything... If you're too stubborn to learn though, Ontario is that way 370378914_9270779238_o.gif

In my university classes I have a lot of Francophones who switched to English schools in CEGEP/University, and they're doing just fine. Their English is better than my french, even, because English-Highschool French classes are kinda pathetic.

Are the laws really necessary to preserve French in Quebec? History seems to say so, and common sense does too in my opinion.

Quebec-hating is mostly reserved to rednecks and retards. Why do you care what either of those groups have to say?

Which isn't to say that you don't get the occasional stupid idea coming out of Quebec. Like that push to have both "Arette" and "Stop" on every sign in the country? The big red octagon is too confusing?

I like Quebec. I've never been there, but after I finish undergrad, I'm planning on moving my ass up to Montreal and going to McGill. I'm quite convinced that Quebec's distinctness is one of the best defenses we have against cultural imperialism from our neighbours to the south. Also, poutine and Mitsou are awesome.

My only issue has been mentioned before; that being the douchebaggery and perceived racist undertones to the non-Levesque sovereignty movement. Other than that, I think Quebec is wonderful.

Almost as awesome as B.C., even. ;)

The only real problem I have with Quebec is the extent that some of the language laws get to. Like, I can't remember exactly how it works, but I'm pretty sure in Quebec you need to have a certain (large) percentage of French-speaking people in your business and you need to have French written on all of your signs, larger and on top of the English translations.

In cities like Montreal this is not a problem, but there are some small entirely anglo villages that have illegally run businesses (or businesses that shut down because of this) because they actually can't get the French speaking workers or can't/won't abide to certain rules because they just don't make sense.

    Also, fuck Trudeau.

Edit: On the plus side, Montreal is a kickass, beautiful city with lots of interesting people and A LOT of porno shops. Also, they have bilingual homeless people there. I shit you not, the last time I went there (a few months ago) I walked past two homeless guys. One aksed in a mumbled voice "spare some change?" while the other said (I'm assuming) the equivalent in French.

What's the deal with all the "What do you think of [country]" threads lately? I'm half-tempted to make one about Texas, but I'm pretty sure I know how that would turn out. (that's right, Texas is a country... shut up)

In any case, I have no beef with Québec. The French-speaking thing doesn't bother me at all, but that's probably because half of my extended family is Cajun. Plus, everything here is in both English and Spanish anyway, so I guess I'm used to the multiple language issue. Honestly, I'd like to visit Québec someday - it sounds pretty neat. I've only visited Canada a couple of times, but it was just to Windsor and back when I was living in Detroit. I'd love a full-on vacation there someday.

Of course there is the issue of sovereignty and all that jazz for the quebecois, if they can seperate fine if not they should shut up about it for more than a year :?

I remember something like that happened in 95 too. Right after the federalist won the referendum, some FLQ letters were received saying there would be retributions against (allegedly) pro-federalism businesses. There were no retributions. It was just hot air, most likely a bunch of kids trying to scare people with the FLQ name without having any way to carry out the threats.

Everybody above me has pretty much covered it. People don't hate Quebec, they hate the constant bitching about everything, the constant attempts to try and leave the country and the way your province basically tries to stamp out any and all attempts at english being used inside it's borders. Oh, and also the way Quebec tries to use every single thing it can in order to forward it's own agenda at the expense of the rest of the country.

Essentially, just STFU and be Canadian like the rest of us. So you've got a different language and culture. That's great. Now stop bitching about it and trying to break the country apart.

I don't know all the language laws, but here are the important ones I know:

    1) All exterior signs have to have French predominant. The other language (English or otherwise) is supposed to be something like 25% the size of the French.

    2) Children of French-speaking parents and immigrants must go into French-language elementary school.

    3) Most professionals (Doctors, Engineers, etc.) have to prove that they know the French language before they can be part of their professional order in Quebec. To prove that you know French, you either have to take a French exam or have high-school education in Quebec (where all students have to take a French exam). I think this is reasonable, since 80%+ of people in Quebec speak French. If you can't speak French here, you shouldn't be a doctor.

    4) I know there's something about businesses having to use French as their language of correspondence or something, but nobody really cares about this.

All this is supposed to protect the French language in a province that is part of a continent that is overwhelmingly English. I guess you can argue that this is not necessary, but I think it is.

Québec is the only French speaking House of Gov't in North America, and it's one of the oldest.

The main reason Québec has the language laws because they were effectively a conquered nation who were allowed to stay where they where while the English took over.

And they don't constantly try to leave Canada.

Quebec pisses me off because of the whole seperatist thing. My respect for individual Canadian provinces isn't that high anyways, given that they have the approximate population of a good sized American town, and I especially don't see what Quebec could possibly offer to the world as its own country.

It just stinks of elitism, that they want to be seperate not because it actually has any benefit to anybody, but because they act like they're too good to be associated with the rest of Canada (and if that's how they treat other Canadians, I don't see them getting along well at all with Americans).

We've had how many referendums on separation in the last 50 years? More than one is close enough to constantly.

And really, that's the most asinine part. Referendum: "Quebec should separate from Canada, yes or no?" Where Yes means "yes please separate from Canada in perpetuity", and No means "ask again later".
