Remember that Sega Genesis Collection game for the PS2 & PSP that was dirt cheap? I just found out that Sega is releasing a new collection, but this time it's for the 360/PS3. More games, $30 price tag, 720p visuals, achievements/trophies (oh yes!), Spring of 2009 release, unlockable interviews, bonus 8-bit/arcade games, BRING IT! Oh and it'll be released in Europe as well (where they'll call it the Ultimate Mega Drive Collection).

Games from the Sega Genesis Collection game that will be included in the Ultimate Genesis Collection:

"• UNLOCKABLE CONTENT. Unlock arcade games and interviews with the original game developers as you earn Achievements on the Xbox 360® and Trophies on the PLAYSTATION®3."

Sadly, it looks like there's no online multiplayer. Oh well, you can't get everything.

Anyway, I'm really psyched. Now time to see if I can unload my PS2 Genesis Collection before its value drops to nil.

This is good if only that if you play the PS2 version on the PS3, you're going to get a minimum of 3 frames of input lag because the PS3 buffers 3 frames of video in BC mode, regardless of TV or input.

Most people wont notice such a small delay, but I find it annoying.

    Very nice set overall.

Ah yeah, Wii owners are getting charged through the teeth for most of these games individually on VC, maybe double or triple the price of the compliation altogether.

Unfortunately, they've applied a shitty filter.

    942c395173e0ddf89938f592a32fb66d.jpg

Also these'll lack the online co-op, vs or leaderboards and whatnot of the XBLA re-releases, as the press release indicates it's straight smoothed-sprite emulation. So all in all not as good as the XBLA rereleases they started doing, even if the cost works out better.

It's funny, all the games I want to play I own in cartridge format but I still want to buy this collection. I'm glad this is happening though, same with VC. All the games I have loved are transcending the original format and they are being carried through time. I had always feared that some games would just disappear and that our old collections would become precious like old vinyls (play them and risk damaging the physical medium or just hold on to them).

Okay, here we go. This image is fucking ridiculously huge, but this is at the resolution this collection runs at, and this is the size Sega provides files in on their FTP and I can't be bothered to resize it. I want to drive home how stunningly ugly it is. I hope they let us turn this filter off :(

I’m justifying my purchase with two things:

    1. I’ll now be playing them on a nice big T.V, rather than a handheld.
    2. There’s more games on it that I want.

Really, I don’t think anything else needs to be said.

The inclusion of Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Spinball means that this isn't just a rerelease of the Sega Genesis Collection, it's a compilation of the Sega Genesis Collection with the Sonic Mega Collection. The only games from the Sonic Mega Collection that aren't already listed are The Ooze and the multi-cart Sonic games (Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles in Sonic 2, and Blue Sphere), all of which were unlockables in the Sonic Mega Collection and which will almost certainly be unlockable in this as well. I doubt that they'll bother to include the Game Gear games that were included in the Sonic Mega Collection Plus or the Sonic Gems Collection, especially since they cut three games from the original Genesis Collection (unless those games are unlockables now). Hopefully the unlockables will include the arcade games from both the PS2 and PSP versions of the Genesis Collection - not that anyone really cares about those.
