    aw nom nom nom

you should try haw snacks or ginger candies (Blake will tell you all about them)

one is very sweet and the other is a whole other kick to the mouth all together

Guilin has some GREAT cake-type snacks that are made from tea leaves

ooh ooh and there's also pineapple cake that is best from Hokkien

and the preserved spicy gizzards out here in Shanghai

and the lamb kebabs of Beijing and Xingjiang province ahhhhhh

candy in other countries is the weirdest stuff

i tried this finnish 'candy' that my supervisor summed up best when she said it tasted like 'pure black evil'

and the girl who gave us it was scoffing it down like it was ambrosia

fun fact: Chinese people consider corn to be one of the sweetest things out there

Chinese desserts are not brutally sweet unless you are in Canton province, most of the time foreigners (or Cantonese people) complain that certain flavors are too bland and such

try to imagine corn, which already to most Westerners is already a bland flavor in itself, being considered the equivalent of a jolly rancher

mind-blowing, isn't it, but there it is

Western sweets don't go well over here unless they are those sour-type candies like gummies, most people think the sweet sweets are way too strong

Hey viv did you ever try Korean food viv.

did you like it, viv. Korean food.

I LOVE their cold noodles... the gray ones made from buckwheat? fucking AMAZING, I've had a bowl every other day whenever I'm in Korea

    kimbob is good, too

I would like the stone-pot-rice dishes more if they didn't fucking sizzle and try to burn me

I don't much like kimchi but I'd be the only one in my family that doesn't

and of course their barbecue is quite nice but I've only had that in China, not in Korea, so I'm not sure what the differences would be

Awesome. I don't find many foreigners who like Korean food. Korean restaurants in the US tend to not tweak their recipes to suit the people's palate.

I plan on teaching English in Korea next year, but before I go I want to stop by China and go on a cultural mayhem.

I bought a red and green bean icecream for the equivalent of around 10 US cents.

    cha shiu bow!

I like the baked ones more than the steamed

the baked ones are "cha siu chan bao" in Cantonese (or cha shao can bao in proper Mandarin pinyin) or "cha siu sou" (cha chao sou), depending on which of the two typical types you got

the steamed ones are proper "cha siu bao"

guys Southeast Asian food is the fucking BOMB

    Thai goes without saying

Vietnamese is fucking great as hell, their shit tends to be tangy without spicy and it so light and doesn't involve lots of oils

Indonesian is its own brand of spicy and holy fuck the way they do their fish is unfuckingbeatable if you like spicy

Singaporean is a mish-mash of Malaysian, Indian, Indonesian and Hokkien goodness

siu long bow (or xiao long bao in Mandarin) is a Shanghainese dumpling that is made of the thinnest skin and with a nice simple filling that consists of soup and pork and sometimes crab roe

it is so good and I love watching foreigners eat it while trying to also manage the soup inside, it's so fucking good holy fuck I have burned myself too many times getting to the soup too fast

how do they get the soup inside?
the soup is either jellied with pork fat or frozen as ice, which is then wrapped inside the dumpling skin and then steamed until it melts into proper soup
