I rotated it and ended up seeing the penis on the zebra. That was unexpected.

    No, they're drab brown/black, just like a horse's.

And yes, I did just GIS "Zebra penis."

    I see.

*GISes for himself* I see. Geez, compared to some of those Google throws up, the one on PBF's zebra looks rather... it's personality that matters, right?

My favorite part of that one is how all the nails are bent and poorly hammered.

Well, you know, she couldn't get a good nailing, so she had to find someone to screw her right.

The one thing I don't like is that the cheating (X) motif is used so many times throughout the comics

Man the cheating (X) motif (is it a motif?) is my favorite. The love lizard, this one, the tunnel and the train etc.

    The joke.

The buzzard "delivered" the baby that the woman is calling to complain about never receiving. She never received it because the buzzard ate it instead of delivering it.

Possibly (not that I speak for Variable), that the Head Stork is oblivious to the fact that the baby in question is right next to him.

How does this guy (or any cartoonist) get ideas? If I tried to make a comic strip, the page would be blank for five hours while I stared and drooled, waiting for funny ideas to hit me.

I read an interview with him once where he talks about how long his jokes take to come up with. He says a lot of them have huge backstories that he tries to condense into three or four panels. I remember him talking about all of these various plot elements in the candyland chocolate spy one. I guess that's why he only did about one a month.

as people have said, the surrealistic nature of the comics are in and of themselves often enough to make one laugh. I was laughing at the idea of the whole stork baby delivery thing being real, but also being so real as to have to deal with complaining customers who claim they didn't get their shipment. making the ridiculous or mythological as mundane as working at UPS is quite funny to me.

but perhaps I just have simple tastes.

I remember him talking about all of these various plot elements in the candyland chocolate spy one. I guess that's why he only did about one a month.

As was mentioned before, a lot of his strips involve taking some charming and whimsical idea and taking it to the logical conclusion. The bunny in the moon one: what does it mean about the size of the cute little bunny if you can see him on the moon? (A: Fucking huge.) The Sgt. Grumbles one: what would a real bear do if you stuck a uniform on him? (A: Sit on his ass.) What would a bloodthirsty race of aliens actually do if confronted with adorable puppies? (A: Kill them all.)

His ideas are only half of it, though. His execution is brilliant, and his strips usually work on multiple levels and have a huge level of detail, even when the art style is very simple.
