As a long time Command and Conquer fan, and knowing that the games themselves are very easy to play, would it be possible for any of the C&C games from the franchise to be played in the tournament? I know that there is a freakish amount of Red Alert 2 & YR players in Washington, and that a Generals/Zero Hour tournament if it was hosted would draw quite a lot of attention. I've been going to LAN's for quite a few years, and I always stumble upon a bunch of people who have a lot of experience with the C&C games, so we inevitably end up playing for fun.
C&C: Generals, or Zero Hour would be an extremely fun game to host tournament wise. Generals, is extremely balanced and fast paced, and Zero Hour has a very large array of armies to choose from and team games or one on ones would be easy to organize. I know that we already have Warcraft 3: FT as a tournament option, but if you ask anyone who's really played both games at a high level, they'll tell you that overall Zero Hour is much more fast paced and micro intensiv than War3 is. I know that Warcraft 3 has a large amount of strategy, but it pales in comparison with the near myriad number of build orders available in ZH. I'm not saying that ZH should be the only game played, but I am asking that the PC Tournament Organizers consider adding this game to the lineup, because I know that we'll be able to get some insanely good matches going if it was added to the roster of games. There's quite a large community of C&C players overall in Washington, and, from past experience with other tournaments with this game accross the country, it will draw quite a large number of professional people to it.
I feel that the number of PC Games in the tournaments isn't quite big, and that other games should be added, but not just first person. Another RTS game wouldn't be bad in addition to frozen throne. And racing games such as anything from the Need For Speed series (Underground 2, Hot Pursuit, etc..) wouldn't be bad to include.
Just my two cents, lock or delete this if you wish, but I really wouldn't mind seeing more variety of games, especially in the RTS section, since you have 3 FPS games already.

If there are other people who would be interested in a C&C tournament, definitely step forward (or any other game, for that matter).
And we're trying to limit the number of tournaments simply because we want to make sure the tournaments all go as planned...we really don't want to over-extend ourselves and end up with the tournament delays that everyone with any lan party experience has probably already gotten used to.

Well, a Starcraft tournament certainly would go faster, what with all the rushing. Ive never seen a starcraft match last longer the 5-10 minutes, which is completly unacceptable for an RTS.
Rule: Anyone who rushes in the first 15 minutes is automatically disqualified and is banned from the PC area for the rest of the day.
I vote for C&C Red Alert 1. Starcraft is fun, but I will always prefer C&C Red Alert.
why settle on choosing specific games for a tournament. why not just pull out ever single game
We need an Ultimate RTS Tournament... New game each round... possible suggestions include Starcraft, C&C: Red Alert, C&C: Generals Zero Hour, WH40k: Dawn of War, Ground Control 2, Rise of Nations, Homeworld 2, Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne, and Rome: Total War. And if theyre out, Empire Earth 2 and/or Age of Empires 3...
That would be some crazy shit...
Oh and eelektrik, that is the BEST idea. Ever.
I would say a five minute warm up period before each match, so new players can get familiarized with the games.
Well, I never was a big fan of Homeworld or Homeworld 2, so, I just put the newest one. I know a friend of mine loves both so I threw it on the list... But, if they did something like this the list of games would probably be picked ahead of time so people could practice at home if they have the game, and some can be picked up pretty cheap by now.
I'm alright with the idea of possibly starcraft coming back, but most games in starcraft are less than 10 minutes long, it might be good if we get a huge tournament going, but if we're setting up pc tournaments, generals/zero hour games last a good 10-15 minutes on average, and are intense.
The only reason I suggested the Generals/Zero Hour games as an addition to the tournament line up was because they're pretty much the best 'alternative' to warcraft 3, because it's simply realistic, as opposed to warcraft 3 - which is fantasy based.
To put it simply, the addition of any Command and Conquer game to the tournament list for PAX would "seal the deal" for many RTS fans I know. People right here on the east coast who would even drive, no extra thought necessary. I, and I suspect others, are tired of tournaments carrying the same games for the past umpteenth years. WarCraft III, Counter-Strike? Yawn. No offense intended to anyone, as those games rightfully earn their merits, but you can only see the same line-up fifty times over before you want a change.
In this case, a C and C: Generals (or preferably ZH for the previous reasons mentioned, as it adds so much more to the game) tournament addition would be very refreshing.
Heck, forget about Command and Conquer for a moment, it would please me to see any other computer game be seriously considered for "official PAX recognition" in the form of a torunament aside from the big monsters that have been dominating the official money tournaments and leagues like dynasties.
Anyway, noobjabi, you're not alone in your thirst, you're not alone.
It's our goal to make, and keep, as many people happy as humanly possible.
Eelectrik: I really like your Ultimate RTS Tourney idea...unfortunately, though, most people don't get every RTS out on the market. I think we'd be eliminating a lot of people who only have 3/4 games played.
For similar reasons, I think it'd be a bad idea to run tournaments on some of these older games like Starcraft or Red Alert. It's not that they aren't great games, but I don't think there's a whole lot of interest in playing them compared to something newer like Warcraft 3 or Generals.
The good news is that we're looking at some LAN Party Intranet software that will make tournaments a lot easier to manage, so there's a very good chance one or two more tournaments.
Then again, Ive only played the demo, even though I bought the game when it came out, installed it, and got distracted by other games... I loved the demo and have never played the full version even though I own it... I really should get around to playing it sometime.
But the multiplayer on the demo was some of the most fun ive had playing multiplayer on any RTS ever...
I consider myself a pretty good Zero Hour player, I'd be more than happy to add in my 2 cents on the rules of the tournament if we have one; such as the map choice and armies and stuff.
I FULLY SECOND THIS IDEA I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE WARCRAFT II.

Get some of the later mod-packs for it and you could have a blast.
this game HAS to be added to the tournament, currently it's one of the best and most balanced RTS games out there!!!
a Homeworld(1 or 2) tournament would be a little too boring in my opinion, well, Homeworld 1 at least, Homeworld two has the fancy explosions and such to increase it's appeal. Homeworld 1 was just too slow in my opinion, awesome fun though, just not LAN material)
I wouldn't mind seeing this game on the computers as well, but ZH for me - is #1 on the top of my list. I've been practicing, so I want to know if it's going to good use.

We definitely want everyone to enjoy themselves, but obviously we can't hold a tournament for every game anyone wants to hold a tournament in. Well, maybe we could if each tournament was a huge FFA game with a 5 minute timer, but that probably wouldn't be too gratifying.
