"Hh, overdid it...What did they teach you here anyways, other than how to not fire a laser turret"

Take it easy on her...she's just a kid goin thru' hell

    "Yeah I guess..."

"You did fine girl. No worries...."

It wasn't an apology, but it was the closest Waric ever came to such things. After a short pause he qualified his remark...

"I get irritable when I'm hungry."

He checked his sensors again as they cleared the atmosphere.

"Magnificent Bastard to Small Blade Three-Eight. Lock-In co-ordinates for the rendezvous point on Tatoo..disregard. Make that Belkadan. We'll jump as soon as we clear Ossus' gravity well."

The atmosphere of Ossus was devoured by cold space as the Magnificent Bastard and RH-Wing soared towards a location suitable for the hyperjump. Far off in the distance a massive capital ship loomed, waiting for its victims. Soon, the escaping convey would be in its iron jaw, to be obliterated by hissing turbolaser fire.

The co-ordinates were pre-programmed into the nav computer, both in the Mag and the fighter. Waric and Krema timed their jump, marking the exit at the exact same hyperspeed and time.

The starfilled sky blurred, blue arcs of light speeding past their ships, and then they entered the maw of hyperspace.

Ossus was behind them, death and pain lingered in the ion trails of their starships. What lay ahead, none knew. Would anyone even make it to Belkedan? What of the Jedi Masters?

Only a hyperspace journey seperated the crew and their fate.

    End of Chapter 1.

[Chat IC, the journey will take 44 hours. In that time, your PC's can reflect on what they learned in the escape, and prepare for what lies ahead. Everyone gains 4 Character Points (for a total of 9).]

Waric let out a slow whistle as he looked at the chronograph beside the nav console.

"44 hours.." He said half to himself, half to Vi.

    "Soo...do you like...stuff?"

    An awkward silence.

    Idiot

"Sorry I'm used to travelling alone..."

"Krema's gonna need to stretch his legs at some point. I'm thinking we should maybe make a pit stop on the way to the rendezvous. Somewhere out of the way. I wonder if..."

His voice trailed off as he mused over a remote possiblity...

Waric scanned the nearby systems on his readout of the galaxy. A brief skim revealed few serviceable spots that would take care of any needs that they had. Most of the systems had, at one time or another, roving black market space stations, but they were just as often pirate traps as they were trade stations.

    One had to be careful.

Waric remembered about the Hapes Consortium, how it had suffered strongly during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, their world captured and terraformed, the once proud and strong people entirely annihilated. No one went there anymore, for fear of running into the Yuuzhan Vong again. That was not an issue, the Yuuzhan Vong had packed up and moved on a long time ago.

Now, it was home to numerous shady space docks and entertainment platforms that orbited the planet. Waric had stopped there a few times when in need of replacement parts and to hide... questionable cargo.

That was a long time ago, but Waric still knew people that operated there.

    The Jagged Alliance.

He rolled with them years ago, until his conscience got the better of him. He still had contacts there. His old friend, Jaryn Mylo.

Hopefully he had gotten over their last conversation.

Not in the mood for apologizing to this 'jerk', it also wasn't appropriate to rail into the pilot that is trying to save your life. Vii'let figured it would be best to just ignore Waric until the adrenaline worked it's way out of their systems, she sat in silence pretending to interpret some instrument panels to 'assess their situation'.

"Uh, W-W-Waric? Who made it o-o-out with you? I c-c-couldn't s-s-see." came Krema over the comm.

"Kynn and I are here, Krema..." her voice trailing off.

The rest are dead, those bastard Sith.

No, have hope you stupid girl. Others could have escaped just like you.

The masters better meet up with us...

She looked to Kynn and then Waric. Vii'let sighed.

"Thanks, for saving our hides," she offered to Waric somberly. Krema's comm still open, "Both of you," she added.

The Hapes Consortium & Jaryn Mylo......hmm. Do I risk bringing these kids there?

    "Bloody pirates..."

Well we don't have much choice. The Sith definitely won't be searching for us there. But still...

    "...I hate that guy."
"Thanks, for saving our hides...both of you."

"What was that? Oh...no sweat kid. Krema did all the hard work. And I'm sure your shots did their share to help him out."

Listen to yourself. You sound all fatherly or somethin'

He switched the comm from TX/RX mode to Intercom so Krema could hear everything.

"So...any of you kids ever visited the Hapan Consortium?"

"The Hapan Consortium?" Vii repeated in a questioning tone.

Oh joy, years of Jedi training after being torn from the scumhole of her youth only to be thrown back into it's hideous maw.

Vii'let knew of the Hapan Consortium, she overheard all sorts of business mentioning it during her childhood on Nar Shaddaa naturally. From all impressions, it didn't sound any more appealing than the life she knew on the recovering Smuggler's Moon.

Memories of the hopeless, miserable people of her old life surfaced. Addicts, gamblers, wasting away, chasing after cred with a old junker full of illicit goods or a blaster in some impossibly deep gutter of an alley. A dancing twi'lek on stage, beautiful, resigned, only seeing her back through peeking curtains... pain, a rough hand yanking lekku, dragging away from the view of the twi'lek woman. So many worthless people, why do they live like this.

There was nothing they could do to change their fates.

    They didn't even try. I changed mine, didn't I?

It was just luck, you're a victim of circumstance just the same.

NO! I am not the same.

She noticed the anger nestled deep inside her, conspicuous due to the thoughts. She didn't need constant reminders of this kind of life and pain.

"Yeah, I've heard plenty enough of it." Vii'let sighed, her forehead scrunching as she pouted. "Can't we stop somewhere else?" she pleaded.

“Sure there’s a lot of systems where we can stop…if we want Sith on our backs. That wasn't a 'hey i don't like you very much' visit back there it was a 'I want to utterly destroy every trace that you ever existed' one. In other words, they'll be looking for us."

He saw the pain on her face, and his tone softened a bit, not much, but a bit.

"I don’t like it either…but regrettably I have contacts their who might have intel that could be…beneficial…and RH-Wing parts that won’t leave a data trail to lead back to us."

"Yeah..." she started in mock dejection. "I know."

Vii fidgeted with the buckle strapping her to the seat. "Whatever, let's just keep moving right?"

    ...

She gazed out into the stream of hyperspace, the visuals hypnotizing and soothing. The only acceptable part of space travel to Vii'let were the hyperjumps, the only calm and respite that she would often get.

    Kynn

They were talking, but he heard only echoes. Echoes of pain and fear.

Silently, Kynn picked himself out of the co-pilot chair. With a heavy grip on the back, he pushed off, and lurched through the door, into the hallway beyond. He made about four steps before slowly tilting into a bulkhead, his head swimming in screams.

He almost whimpered, then twisted it into a growl as he pushed himself away from the wall. Balling his fist and hitting the metal – hard – he stumbled further down the hallway.

In his mind he smelled burned ozone, vomit, and blood. Somewhere, someone cried. Somewhere, a mind reveled in the horror.

In his head, Tary burned and died.

He looked around for a place to sit, but found only the floor. Spinning around, looking for anything to support him, his vision faded. Vaguely, he felt himself falling face first onto something flat, the taste of blood blossoming faintly in his mouth.

Rolling around, he stared into a bright light. The flashes of lightsaber combat were accompanied by a steady stream of desperation.

He screamed, suddenly upright, on his feet again. His hand held something cold. Looking down at his hand, he saw his weapon.

    Useless.

    He was useless.

    Daniel died awash in lightning.

    Why did he die?

Self-contempt turned to anger, and with as much power as he could muster, he hurled the lifeless metal tube away, smashing it into the wall. It rebounded almost to his feet. Picking it up with the force, he hurled it again. Again and again, until it shattered, the pieces flying everywhere.

Staring down at the remains, he saw the focal crystal glimmering like a piece of the sun against the worn-out deck.

    He felt cold.

    Chapter 2: Vagabonds

Regardless of where they were going, Ossus was behind them. Their home was gone.

The Sith had taken away everything. The temple wasn't just home, it was family and friends, a place where a padawan existed. The galaxy suddenly seemed oppresively infinite.

What lay ahead was anyone's guess, but the small crew aboard the Magnificent Bastard held a small measure of hope that the rendez-vous point had answers about their future.

Nine hours passed quickly, despite the conditions in which some of them travelled. Krema fought muscle cramps and the distressing urgency of bladder pains. The crew on the transport had it much better than he.

Waric fiddled with the control panel when the warning light flashed informing him that the jump was coming to a close. He deactivated the hyperdrive and the ship shuddered as it slipped into realspace and moved forward on sublight power.

Ahead, the vast fleet of floating space stations, docks, markets and recreation vessels huddled in a massive collage of metal. There were dozens of individual stations, all connected by small transport shuttles and vacuum sealed walkways. Hundreds of small transport freighters and smaller capital ships hovered about.

    The Hapes Consortium waited.

The hyperspace tunnel collapsed and real space snapped into being with a slight shudder.

    Hapes…all too familiar.

A group of salvaged fighters swept around the furthest group of ports and opened fire on an asteroid.

He keyed the com on an encrypted channel.

“Small Blade three-eight, this is the Bastard. Maintain tight formation and do not… I repeat do NOT broadcast on any open frequencies. I’ll do the talking.”

He glanced towards the now closer clusters of space ports.

    Not that one…or that one

3rd Cluster closest to the planet. Lower level.

    “Right…that’s what I thought.”

“When we’re down if anyone asks what we’re doing with a Jedi Coucil RH-Wing…we stole it. While we’re on the subject I would recommend not wearing Jedi Robes. If you need civvies, there’s clothing in the storage lockers onboard.”

    Kynn

Turning away from the wreck of his blade as the ship tore out of hyperspace, Kynn once more felt calm. It was not the calm of control, the calm of a Jedi. It was the peace of death. The pain was fading, but the memories grew.
“While we’re on the subject I would recommend not wearing Jedi Robes. If you need civvies, there’s clothing in the storage lockers onboard.”
Calmly tearing off his robes, he pulled on some clothes that he had stashed aboard the first day the evacuation plans had been revealed. Heavy combat boots and gray urban camouflage spilled onto the floor at his feet. He merely looked at it for a moment, prodding it with his foot as if searching for life.

When your options are anger, sorrow, or a void of nothing, which one is the least damning? No master had ever answered that.

    Briskly, he dressed.

There was a feeling of recall, as he looked down himself. The boots and trousers made him think of his years before the academy. 'The good old days', he mused. 'Back to the old ways as well, maybe?'

He tucked his folding knife into the belt, and hoped not.

"Yeah, I don't really care for them anyways," Vii'let stated as she stripped the Jedi robes. A snug-fitting dark grey top and pants that she wore beneath would suffice. They were suitable for free movement and action and much preferred to the robes, and now there were no masters to frown upon a lack of modesty. Vii flashed a significant amount of midriff, but then again a covered up twi'lek would be highly suspicious.

"This is fine," she replied to Waric. Her saber dangled from it's belt clip.

    Kynn...

Surely they all felt something was wrong as she had. But she couldn't face whatever it was right now. Vii was too busy ignoring her own fears and doubts and still denying the tragedy to herself, she surely wasn't acknowledging everyone elses.

Nothing we can do but keep moving and reach the Masters. She built her resolve around that. Kynn will be fine once we reach rendezvous.

Convinced that she was coping, she prepared herself mentally for the docking and waiting station.

Waric guided the Bastard towards a particular cluster of stations. Two large stations, connected by a sealed tunnel, slowly spun in a gentle arc. The reformed smuggler clicked on his comm and addressed the tower for clearance.

There was a brief pause as the control room processed his ship identification and then a young woman pleasantly welcomed the Magnificent Bastard aboard space station Allegiance.

The transport computer attached itself to the Allegiance wireless network, instantly connecting the passengers with the information system supplied by the station. Those without spam filters on their personal area network were bombarded with ads for casinos, strip clubs, cantina's and luxury suites.

There was lots to do on the Allegiance.

A software aided landing algorythm locked the Bastard into a guided landing, carefully setting her down inside a massive bay. A handful of ships sat in the hangar and numerous small crews attended various facilities within. Three men waited a few yards away while the Bastard powered down. Two were armed with wicked looking blaster rifles and decked out in doubled plated chest armour. Cybernetic modifications marked their bodies, where flesh and bone had been replaced by gears and electronics. In the center of the two men was a white haired man with a glowing cybernetic eye. He wore a blaster pistol at his side and a rather grizzled expression on his face.

The middle man crossed his muscled arms over his barrel chest.

It was an old ... friend.

Jaryn Mylo. It had been years.

The Bastard let out a slight groan and hiss as she kissed the ground. Three figures approached through the steam of the cooling sub-light engines as Waric completed his post-flight sequence. Waric remembered the last time he’d seen that glowing eye, in this very spot 8 years ago. There had been rash words.

“Well let’s get this over with.”

    He keyed the com;

“Krema stand-by with weapons armed. There may be some bad blood, and a snubfighter may talk a little louder than myself. If things go bad melt the mook closest to you…not the old guy.”

Unbuckling his seat he turned to see the young twi-lek stripping her robes off.

pheew…haven’t seen that much skin in a loooong time.

“You be careful kid? That could be a dangerous outfit,” he said as buckled on his gunbelt, a lightsaber tucked into a pouch on his pack.

Turning down the corridor he activated the Bastard’s main access loading ramp. Kynn came around the corner head-to-toe in camo combat gear.

“Follow me you two, I’ll do the talking. I’m not sure what mood Mylo will be in. Krema’s standing by in the fighter in case things go bad. Stay a few paces back weapons ready…but don’t look like they’re ready….casual..just try not to provoke anything.”

With that being said he turned to head down the ramp. Hesitating he turned back to them and said, "And if you know any good Jedi mind tricks...feel free, but don't screw up."

Vii'let followed behind Waric as Kynn joined them. Don't be nervous she told herself, be care-free and casual.

Kynn was hard to read on the exterior, and right now she didn't need to uncover more problems to worry about, so she subverted the urge to scan his surface thoughts. Worrying about worrying, you silly girl. Nevermind, focus, mind on the present.

A sudden idea struck Vii'let as she passed by the lockers. Snatching up a small green cloak she wrapped it around her waist, attempting to tie and dress it in a stylish fashion so as not to be obvious concealment for a weapon. It would have to do.

With a short hustle she caught up to the others as they reached the landing ramp.

The transports' ramp slid to the ground as the side hatch hissed and then opened. The three men waited, the guards clenching their rifles a little tighter, raising a their barrels a few centimeters for a fast draw should one be required.

The gray haired cybord raised his hand and waved them off.

"Trust me, boys, he's not dangerous. He understands the way of things, he's on my turf and would be a fool to raise a weapon on me.

    Isn't that right, Waric?"

Jaryn Mylo's face was stone, one couldn't read his emotions by the look on him. Numerous scars marked various places where his flesh was bare. He had the look of a man who lived life by the blaster.

"Or, has the old pirate fallen on desperate times and come to rob me? I can't think of another reason why you'd show your face here again, Waric."

Waric knew Jaryn well, enough to read the man without the use of the Force. It was the look the man wore when a shipment got lost, vessels were damaged and men were killed.

It was a look of displeasure, despite not really looking like anything.

No, Jaryn wasn't happy to see him, that was obvious. It was nothing like the Han holovids on Cloud City, there was no happy hug coming from an old gambling buddy.

    Perhaps carbonite...

    Kynn

“I'll be around,” Kynn muttered to Waric before walking out of the hangar, his pace a twitch of restrained urgency. As the doors closed behind him, it was all he could do not to jog – run – down the hallways.

He wanted to be alone. The last thing he needed was to be alone. He knew as much. The question was what company he needed. He certainly didn't need his fellow students.

Like a starving man to an apple tree, Kynn clawed his way through the station, driven solely by a primal urge of the Force. Corridors, droids and machinery all passed him by in a haze of lights and droning machinery.

Finally, pushing his way out of the he made it to his destination, and found out where he'd ended up.

Standing at the bottom of the central mall, Kynn looked up and saw the real world for the first time in many years. The vegetation flourishing under artificial lighting, the fake animal sounds, the holograms and advertisements. For a brief second, he was back at home. Waiting for the blast. The smoke and the terror.

He pushed that aside. That was then. This was now. He no longer hated these people. Somewhere out of sight, generators hummed, keeping this fake alive. Somewhere below, technicians struggled to maintain the illusions. Right now, it didn't matter.

Sitting down by the trees and bushes that clustered around the turbolift, he opened himself up to the force. He couldn't live right now, but perhaps he could live vicariously. Just a little while. He reached out and touched creation, and a tangled mass of life, the emotions of a thousand minds, rushed into him. It was like nothing he had felt before. In the academy, there was peace, control and harmony. Here, here there was everything. Anger, happiness, sadness, love. No-one had taught these people to control their inner lives, and he relished in their freedom.

For a few moments, he merely bathed in the energies, a smile spreading across his face as he let his legs dangle in the air like a little kid. Time was short though, and he got to work. Full of others' life, he sat down and began sorting his memories.

Tara died, but he heard only her laughter.

For a young man, Krema was a talented mechanic. He pulled off the protective panel that covered engine 3, a piece of metal that had a huge section blown out of it and had collected a nice thick layer of carbon scoring from the blaster hit.

Inside, the engine itself didn't look too bad. Most of the wiring that connected to the main computer system was fused, melted onto the engine itself. He realized the engine was simply shorting itself out, causing huge drainage spikes through the craft. It made sense now looking back.

Krema entered the list of supplies into his PAN; tools, first and foremost, new copper wiring, new digital panel, and a replacement power displacement module. Easy things to find in any spaceport, and luckily they were cheap pieces to buy. He did a quick calculation and estimated the cost at one hundred credits.

Not surprisingly, she was of no help in diagnosing the starfighter. Krema listed off what he would need to make repairs and that they should be easily available. Of course, it would take credits to procure.

Vii knew that none were to be had by her, and it was highly suspect that Krema was in the same condition. "How are we going to get those things? Maybe we should ask Waric," she suggested. "C'mon."

His mind wandered back through the ancient history of his past, recalling the times they’d spent together good and bad. And their final words over the com as Waric left the last time…

    HOW? WHY?

His eyes noticed Kynn blast past him heading for the turbolifts…

    Does it matter?

“Of course it matters you idiot!!!”

Vii’let and Krema made noises but his mind didn’t register the words…they walked away..

I should have…I could have brought her with me….

Lifting his head out of his hands he looked around taking in his surroundings…

I don’t even remember entering the ship let alone my cabin

Your losing it man, get yourself together.

He heard Krema in the crew cabin rummaging for clothing after his shower and decided to follow suit.

He came out feeling refreshed physically but still her face kept floating in his mind.

What happened? How did she die?

    He was frustrated.

“Why would that jackass tell me she was dead without any sort of explanation,” he fumed as he made his way to the laser cannon turret hoping the distraction would help take his mind of the pain in his heart.

“I should find him and make him tell me what happened. He owes me…..he owes her at least that much.”

Easy there…deep breaths just like Master Walsc taught you.

You’re no Jedi. What’re you trying to pull

    Shut Up

With that he turned his attentions once more to the laser turret to see if he could figure out what was wrong.

Waric had taken apart the turreted weapon, realizing that to get to the heart of the matter, one had to dig deep. After a quick read over, he knew exactly what was needed.

    New wiring.

At least fourty creds worth, but he could probably get Krema to do the fix even if he wasn't fully versed in such matters.

    {OOC: We all know he critically failed, but try to remember that Waric believes he knows whats wrong. No meta-gaming please}

"Why did I what? Why do you think? When things go wrong, buy new wiring, that's what I always say. It should take care of 'things'."

Waric extricated himself from the turret and stood to face the two young padawans. He couldn't remember why they were looking at him expectantly.

    Did I miss something?

    Usually.

" S'cuse the language. I usually try not to use Bothan curses around female folk."

He quickly mastered a twinge of pain as Alena's memory floated to the surface again.

    "...did you guys need something?"

"We have no credits to make repairs," blurted Vii, interjecting before Krema. She turned to him and rocked on her heels, her hands held behind her back. Vii didn't want to actually make the request and hoped Krema would again.

A little guilt hit Vii'let as she noticed the turret panels exposed and wiring everywhere. What a mess.

"Hmm...well that makes three of us. I've got a few hundred stashed away for emergencies."

Turning to Krema he asked, "I don't suppose you've ever fixed a turreted laser cannon have you?

"15 minutes you say....and about 40 creds for the wiring harness I figure."

"Alright, unless you wanna double check that I didn't miss anything let's go scrounge some parts! I know a guy..well i used to know a guy who might give us a deal, and usually has pretty wide and varied selection. As long as he isn't dead too. His name's Seth."

With glance back at the turret, Waric, confident in his abilities knew what needed to be done...

(OOC: Off to the bar/trading post to find Seth Los unless anyone has anything else to say?)

Waric, Vii and Krema huddled into the lift and made their way to the cantina/trading post.

The smuggler had been good friends with Seth, a friendship that, as far as he knew, was still amiable. They left on good terms, but one couldn't be sure if his... expeditious departure had sown sore feelings.

The lift doors slid apart and opened straight into the cantina. Messages beeped on their PAN's about drink specials and new items in the store. It was all one big room, with one side wall to wall with quality goods and junk alike. The opposite side housed a handful of booth's and the bar was set up across the room from the elevator door. It was well lit, and somewhat a warm atmosphere, only tarnished some by the presence of the trading post. A smattering of people enjoyed drink and the faint trace of music in the background.

A thirty-something human male with short black hair and a bristling beard of the same colour walked out from behind the bar counter, a rag and mug in his hands. The cup squeeked as he cleaned it. He was a robust man, portly but not fat, and he had a friendly look on his face.

"Welcome, welcome, friends!" he said, making his way over to the group. "My name is Seth and you have just wandered into..."

    The man stopped.

"You're kidding me, right... Waric? Waric Bendix?" he asked with folded arms over his chest. "Now you are one man I never expected to see again.

A massive grin broke out over his face.

"Good to see you, old man," he said, the grin leading to a genuine laugh as he walked over and embraced Waric. "Where in all hell have you been for the last eight years? I thought you were dead!"

The mall was busy enough, people wandering to and from small shops that lined the long, narrow corridor. Bright, neon signs hung over the individual businesses, ranging from tattoo parlours to electronics shops.

Kynn sat alone in the gardens at the center of the hallway as the clientel of the spaceport, mainly adults, walked past him and onto their lives. One young man, however, approached Kynn, sheepishly stepping from his one man kiosk and crossing over into the garden.

"Can I interest you in a I-744 Power Converter, straight from Tashi's Station on Tattooine? Guarenteed to increase the speed and range of your PAN by 25%, or your credits back!"

He waited anxiously, hoping for the sale.

Waric looked around as they stepped into the Beer 'n Barg'n. It had been a long time.

    Just how I left it
"Welcome, welcome, friends! My name is Seth and you have just wandered into..."

A grin spread across Waric's face as he recognized his old friend.
"You're kidding me, right... Waric? Waric Bendix? Now you are one man I never expected to see again."

Ahh good, he doesn't hate me for ditchin
"Good to see you, old man. Where in all hell have you been for the last eight years? I thought you were dead!"

“Oh I might as well have been some days comrade,” Waric said with a chuckle. “It’s good to see you too alive and well. No hard feelings between you and one-eye after I left?”

"Ah, forget him," Seth said with a laugh. "He's a miserable old cod... ever since Alena..um. Yeah, heh, don't worry about Jaryn, he just sits up in his throneroom and broods all day. I haven't seen him in weeks.

So, what can I getcha? Beer, wine? I remember you had a penchant for the hard stuff... whiskey?"

"Yeah...he was the welcoming committee. 24 hours and out the hatch. Which brings me to why I'm here...I need RH-Wing parts and a wiring harness for the bastard's laser turret... Which reminds me, this here's Krema, and the girl's name is V. They're my...associates. The kid's a hothand but we ran into some trouble and he got singed."

He turned to Krema, "Give him the list kid."

Waric watched Seth for a reaction trying to read him as he went through the list.

"Couple more things if you have them...we need an old astromech droid and if you can scrounge it...some black paint...."
