John Woo movies, and most Asian movies in general, really heap melodrama on. It can be really really corny sometimes. Hard Boiled has the least amount of melodrama, and was the last film Woo made in Hong Kong. So far, it is the apogee, the pinnacle, etc of his career. His movies in America have been pretty bad, even the better ones like Face-Off really lack something.

A Better Tomorrow and ABT2 are definitley worth owning if you love Hard Boiled. There is a lot of melodrama, but some utterly amazing badass stuff and awesome fight scenes.

Face/Off was good for what it is, but I agree, it is really lame compared to Hard Boiled, probably because I saw Hard Boiled before I had even heard of Face/Off. I really need to see The Killer and ABT1&2.

but yeah, has anyone seen the dead or alive trilogy by takeshi miike? because hot damn those are pretty awesome as well as being ridiculously stupid
if im remembering the right movie, the first dead or alive movie had the most ridiculous ending ive ever seen of anything ever

check out the sequels too. they manage to top the ending to the original

pointing out that the protector still contains the best scene in the history of cinema

Might have to be a bit more specific. Because while the staircase fight was awesome, when I think of Protector I think of this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi399mFwsB8

and how a friend and I were stupid enough to take a drink every time we heard a bone crunching noise.

If anyone else can think of a scene so awesome it got them nice and buzzed I'd like to hear it

that was totally the best scene in Protector. Ha, I loved how they edited out like 20 minutes of story for the English version. If I remember correctly, didn't they remove the parts explaining why the boy does the shooting?

Oh god the bone-breaking is really hard to watch if you have ever broken a bone before.

I wonder what kind of release Ong-Bak 2 will get. I hope they don't edit the shit out of it and turn it into a b-movie mess like they did with his other films.
