Make it a poll it'll be way easier to see results and 12 months, your results are gonna be hella skewed though since you know this ia an MMO sub forum.

Yeah but that poll option doesn't seems available.

And the result being skewed isn't important because I just want a general stats among people in this section.

Yea only mods can make polls iirc.

Anyway I payed for 12 months of CoX and a month of DaoC, I also played 3.5 months of WAR but I didn't pay for that(aside from the cost of the box).

Well, I've been subscribed all 12 months of the year to WoW. And then I also have probably 4 months of CoX, and maybe 2 months of EQ2.

So I'm gonna say 18 months of MMO subscription this year.

If your subscription has been active that long and you've paid monthly (as opposed to bulk plans) you've shelled out $720 easily on monthly fees alone. Granted that's over four years, but still.

I've found that paying $15 a month for an MMO is cheaper than what it would cost to keep me entertained by buying single player games that last a week.

This year I've played 8 months of CoX on my main account and at least 2 on my alt account, though I get free time by referring my inactive accounts back to the game.

Hmm, I think I might have taken a break from WoW earlier in the year and it the subscription lapsed again later in the year so that would be 9 months there. I bought a time card for CoX because they were super cheap, but I didn't end up reinstalling the game because I couldn't be bothered going though the patching process and didn't have time to play it anyway.

And I payed for 3 months of WAR time, because Mythic are assholes and don't let you access the "free" month that comes with the game unless you buy more time first, so if you play with time cards you are screwed over.

I've paid for 24 months this year of WoW (My account and my fiance's account).

It is much, much, much cheaper than taking her to see all the new movies that come out, or going to other places of entertainment such as concerts, plays etc. We still do go to all those, but much more rarely than we would if we didn't play WoW. I pay 30$ per month for both us to play.. I can go through 30$ easily just at the movie theater once you add in popcorn/soda, then there's usually dinner afterwards.

We went to a NIN concert, that cost us $100 just for the tickets, then again concessions, and we went to dinner before hand.

MMO's are super cheap, and I love them for being so.

The method sucks for time card users, but if you just own a CC you can punch it in then cancel without it ever charging you anything. And unless you're a kid whose parents won't let them use a CC, there's no reason not to have one.

I played Everquest from when it was brand new up to about Planes of Power or perhaps the two after (I can't remember their names, there's waaaayy too many fucking expansions now to remember them all). I quit for awhile and came back for about a month and played with my roommate, then we switched to EQ2 and played for about a month or two.

I also have played Guild Wars for about 3 years and own all of the campaigns and the expansion. It's probably my favorite MMO so far, and by far the best-looking one out there.

To top this list off I've been playing Eve Online for nearly a month now and it's pretty goddamn good as well. I may continue to pay for it if it holds my interest and I can continue to put forth the time to play.

Poll threads are usually a no go but this is kind of interesting so we'll see what happens.

I have been subscribed to an MMO, on average, about 10 months every year since 2000. There were some large breaks at times but I was subbed to CoX for 4+ years without stopping. I dropped CoX this year a month before WAR went live so this year I've subbed for 10 months if you don't count the free month WAR came with.

I like MMOs and, as others have said, they certainly save me money. I don't play them every day but I usually feel guilty about buying new games while subbed to an MMO. My MMO subscription provides incentive for me to save money in other places. I know from the months I haven't been subbed in the past that MMOs have saved me a good deal of cash. Oh lord, and now that the wife is all about WAR our entertainment expenses have plummeted.

CoH/V is the only MMO I've been subscribed to non-stop for more than a year at a time. Just hit 4 years straight for it. I've also been subbed to EQ2 for most of this year and about half of the year before. That's my usual MMO M.O. -- two at a time, say 22 months a year average. Before EQ2 my second MMO was Guild Wars, which was definitely a cheaper combination... sigh.

Well hell, if we're talking the long term, I subbed to EQ since it's release in '99 straight though to the American release of FFXI, with two accounts for the last 2 years of that time in EQ. Then I subbed to FFXI for about two months, went over to CoH for about two months. Whenever WoW came out I subbed into that straight through to BC. After about a month of BC I stopped for 3 months; however I went back over to CoX. Now I'm back to WoW with 2 accounts. Somewhere in there, I also fit DAOC, Shadowbane, GuildWars, and Vanguard.

From EQ1's release sometime in '99 to today in 2008, I do not believe I've had a month without an MMO payment.

I have tired Warhammer off and on for the last few months and it just doesn't feel like Warhammer to me

When I think about it over the 6 years I have played and paid for MMOs with a few breaks inbetween

I pay 6 months at a time for Warcraft there is a new "fat kid" tax here so it's not as cheap as it seems

I always laugh when people try to justify MMO monthly prices as being cheaper and better than taking out a girlfriend to a movie or something like that. I don't know... Maybe I'm old fashioned. But seeing a movie and taking the girlfriend out to dinner is easily 100x better than having her sit next to me while I get pissed that an Orc is camping my corpse in STV.

Me? I paid for probably 3 months of CoX, and played maybe 2 - 3 weeks at most. MMOs are good when I don't have school or complicated stuff to worry about. I can shut my brain off for the weekend and just grind away.

No, dinner and a movie with a girlfriend is way better than a day of gaming on WoW. But paying for a dinner and a movie every friday night is not better than having money for anything else ever.

If there's a movie out she really wants to see, it's a no brainer, we go. WoW keeps us from going and seeing shit movies we don't really want to see, just cause we're bored. Or going to the mall, and spending 100$ on shit we don't need, just cause we're bored. WoW keeps us from going to the bars every weekend and spending about 100$ a weekend on booze, just cause we wanted to go "do somethin".

WoW and other MMO's are just simply more entertaining than regular home activities such as watching TV, and the cost per month easily outweighs the cost of other things we could be doing trying to stay entertained. Because of WoW, we no longer want to have 300 channel cable packages, because it's not worth it. Where we used to flip through the channels constantly.

It's not good because then you don't have to take the GF out, it's good because then you don't go out unelss you really want to, and do save a shitload of money that way.

We still go to movies or watch them at home or go downtown or a million of other things just not as much as we did before WAR. Besides nothing makes for a better "date" than your little duo being a major factor in winning a close match in Phoenix Gate. I find MMOs preferable to movies with my wife because we talk a hell of a lot more.

My wife and I once spent a year paying for 3 Asheron's Call subscriptions, 2 Asheron's Call 2 subscriptions and 2 City of Heroes subscriptions. Then AC2 announced they were closing their doors, so we tried WoW and cancelled all 7 accounts before the first month of WoW expired. But the past 3 years it has been just 12 months of WoW each.

As for the 13 bucks a month we spend on wow vs going out? We get movies sent to us in the mail by blockbuster, turn them in at the store for a free rental and then get a free rental of something extra each month. And just last week we took our 7 year old granddaughter to the Ballet. So we still go out and do stuff, but we also spend time playing an MMO together.

This is fun, but my main justification is if I'm not suscribing to an MMO, I'm jumping between console/single player games, and will buy at least one new game a month. I'm basically replacing ~$50/month on a new game with $15/month on just WoW. And it's plenty fun and I have great friendships with my guildmates, moreso than any other onling game I've played (like TF2, CS, etc; even when I play on one server or join clans).

And it is also fun to just stay in and run an instance on a Saturday, beats going to the mall clothes-shopping.

And if your guildmates live closeby the occasoinal get together at a bar or restaurant is a lot of fun. Nothing beats drunken WoW stories at a sporta bar, while people around you are utterly confused on what you're talkign about :P

An even more depressing survey to do is how much total you've spent on MMOs, subscriptions and expansions.

I've got almost 5 years of CoX over two accounts, minus 2 included months, minus maybe 8 months of free time from referrals to myself or others, so 47 x $15 = $705
Plus $50 for CoH, $60 for CoV (collector's ed), $20 for GvE ed (2nd account) and I think $15 for the CoH DVD ed upgrade to my main account.

So $850 over the past 4 years, 8 months, or $15.18 a month. Including the months I didn't actually have either account active.

That seems like a hilariously tiny amount. I wonder how many hours of joy and entertainment you got for such a small sum. MMO's seem like a really good deal.

Also, I would be interested in how many non-MMO games people played while subbed to an MMO. Do most of you just play the MMO, or do the MMO+ any other games that come out?

What's really fun is comparing our addiction (MMOs) to other peoples addictions, like tobacco, or alcohol!
One of my friends rags on me for wasting so much money on WoW, yet smokes a pack a day. He goes through more money in a week, than I do in two months. (Cigs are up over 5$ a pack where I'm at now, don't know about where you guys are).

EDIT: And my GF and I have a Wii and a DS we play. We buy a new game for one or the other probably.. every 4 months or so. Pretty much she has her Marios on the DS, I have my Smash Bros, and we both have the Mario Karts, so we're set.

Cigarettes are taxed to hell and back here in California, I couldn't afford to start smoking even if I wanted to.

I can, however, afford to buy plenty of Non-MMOs. I have every system under the sun and probably buy, on average, two games every month, sometimes three. I will also often buy games for systems that aren't "current" anymore, like PSOne titles, Dreamcast stuff or NeoGeo Pocket games.

That said: I have a huge backlog and have probably only beaten 4 games in the past two years D: .
