Music and Comic Books

I was re-reading Ultimates Vol. 1 yesterday and at the point of the big climatic battle I was thinking some dramatic music would make it awesome.

So I come here to ask what do you think of music and comics and if you do read comic books with music do you have any suggestions.

For starters the song "Introduce a little anarchy" from the Dark Knight soundtrack goes well in most tense situations in comic books.

I can't read and listen to music with lyrics at the same time. That said, I will occasionally put in some Thelonious Monk or Joe Satriani. Lords of Karma goes well with pretty much anything.

As for songs inspired by comics, I always enjoy Four Color Love Story.

I can never decide whether it was dumb or brilliant that Scud had suggested voice talent and suggested soundtrack for each issue. Thinking of those voices really changed how I thought of some of the characters and scenes.

Yeah, it's obviously lacking that professional polish. But I feel it makes up for it by being kind of earnest. It's the musical equivalent of an indy comic that the creator's put together at the local Kinko's; yeah the anatomy's probably kind of fucked, and the art looks sort of grainy, but you have to admire the creator's passion.

Eh. It's fun. I like it. Kind of have to hear it to make it enjoyable though.

Here's another most people probably have heard. You've all heard Tenacious D right? If not, you're doing life wrong. Anyways, Wonderboy
High above the mucky-muck, castle made of clouds,
There sits Wonderboy, sitting oh so proudly.
Not much to say when you're high above the mucky-muck.
    Yeah, yeah.
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power?
Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now?

    [spoken]
Now it's time for me to tell you about Young Nastyman,
archrival and nemesis of Wonderboy, with powers comparable to Wonderboy.
What powers you ask? I dunno, how 'bout the power of flight?
That do anything for ya? That's levitation holmes.
How 'bout the power to kill a yak, from 200 yards away...
with mind bullets! That's telekinesis, Kyle.
How 'bout the power... to move you?

    [sung]
History of Wonderboy and Young Nastyman,
    Riggah-goo-goo, riggah-goo-goog.
A secret to be told, a gold chest to be bold,
And blasting forth with three-part harmony, go!
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power?
Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from that mucky-muck man?

    [spoken]
    When Wonderboy and Young Nastyman joined forces;
they formed a band the likes of which have never been seen,
and they called themselves Tenacious D. That's right,
    [sung]
    Me! And KG!
    [KG (spoken):] That's me.
    [sung]
    We're now Tenacious D!
    Come fly with me, fly!

Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power?
Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now,
    Oh!
    [spoken]
    Take my hand!
    Young Nastyman, we're gonna fly!
    Bring out your broadsword.
    There's the hydra.
    Slice his throat!
    And grab his scrote.
    You take the high road,
    I'll take the low.
    There, the crevasse,
Fill it with your mighty juice.

I usually throw on something to fit the theme of the book. For Punisher Max, it's all rock/metal, for example.

However, The Dark Knight's soundtrack sounds awesome with any book.

blue monday did that too, with like ultra-hip suggestions. i think all of chyna cluggston's stuff does that. i'm pretty sure i remember it in scooter girl too, but am too lazy to walk out to the other room and confirm that in my copy.

Yes, it was a Scud spinoff that was also pretty good. I've only got like one or two issues, but I'm hoping that now that they have Scud all collected, they'll do the same for all their side projects.

It's strange for a master of comics storytelling like Alan Moore to attempt such a difficult task like conveying a song.
