Game stories of ridiculous scale?

FaffelFaffel Registered User regular
edited January 2009 in Games and Technology
After remember a metal album I listened to last year, I would love to find some games where you just do horrendously epic things. Things like killing entire pantheons, taking them over and reigning over planets with an iron fist. Extinguishing civilizations, severely ravaging the time line or tearing holes in the force with your mere presence. KoToR2 I know steps into epic territory with the whole
UR A HOLE IN DA UNIVERSE
thing, but are there any other games of similarly epic stature?

Well, the Total War games are pretty epic by nature, it's sometimes satisfying to exterminate an entire Nation just because they looked at you the wrong way.

For games with "Epic Moments" I'd say Rune: Viking Warlord - the part where you drink the blood of Loki and
become a God / Giant and the next level has you running around killing vikings that are roughly the size of your little finger

Does not count unless the hug is punctuated by driving a dagger into its spine.

True enough. I wouldn't mind replaying GoW2, in fact. My favourite part was smashing that guy's head in a giant metal door over and over. God of War is the line of thinking I'm shooting for. Are there really so few games where people do insanely epic things? Small-minded developers!

I think iji (http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php) deserves a little credit here. Granted, it's not at the super galactic level, but the enemies just keep getting bigger and bigger the firefights between everyone just gets more and more crazy.

    Does Xenogears count?

Fei, the main character of the game (and the guy in my avatar), is an iteration of a child named Abel, who was on an interstellar transport. On the ship, Abel made contact with the Wave Existence (WE), a being from a higher plane of existence, which was trapped in a device called the Zohar. Making contact with the WE essentially made his soul immortal. Until the WE can be freed, Abel will continue to be reborn.

Also on-board the ship was a biological weapon named Deus. It took over the ship, causing the captain to initiate the self-destruct sequence. The wreckage crashed on the planet below, where the game takes place.

Over time, an evil nation called Solaris came to power. It hid behind a cloaking device, manipulating the surface from afar.

In short - Fei slays one of his past iterations that hounds him throughout the game, slays Deus, helps an enemy transcend humanity by joining with the WE, destroys Solaris, destroys the Church, destroys the zombies, which were created by Solaris, destroys the Soylent System, eventually stops humans from devolving into mounds of gelatinous goo that try to rejoin Deus as raw genetic material, and gets the girl. Pretty epic, IMO.

Half Life 2, and Episode 2 in particular are pretty epic.

    Mass Effect too.

The Darkness has some surprisingly epic moments. Not enough for my liking though.

HL2 isn't really what I'm looking for. Mass Effect fits the bill.

The album that inspired this post is about a man. This man got angry at the gods. So angry at the gods that he decided that he would create an army to battle them and set out to create it. Eventually he takes over the world, wages a war on the Gods and wins. He then becomes a God himself and scorches the Earth.

    That's what I consider epic.

My best guess, March at the earliest, October more probably. You know how these things get pushed back and back.

Still, Brutal Legend is right at the top of my most wanted list. I think only uncharted 2 and mass effect come close in terms of sheer hype for me.

He said stories of ridiculous scale, not stories that are ridiculous.

Heavenly sword has some awesome moments, even if the game is overall a let down. Still worth a play though.

Also, i second Earth Defense Force for huge battles though there's not much story.

Yeah my first vote is for Xenogears. Also, Breath of Fire II does the whole "pissing off a religion" too.

I'd also say Valkyrie Profile, since you

I ran a "political" (read: evil) D&D campaign once which required that the party side with a politically totalitarian "resistance" movement, overthrow the rule of the supposedly "good" clergy, break into their sacred temple, and banish the god of the sun from the material plane.

It was pretty brutal, to say the least.

Both Ninja Gaidens feature a lone ninja badass roaming the earth to defeat a dark and terrible evil to save the world while he works through armies of demons, ninjas, soldiers, and robots as though they were made of tissue paper.

In a word it's pretty epic, fighting thirty something guys in one staircase without getting hit is the very definition of badass.

Mass Effect bears another mention. The last four or so hours are the most intense I've been a part of for quite some time.

    How 'bout Final Fantasy Tactics?
Church is full of shit and knows it, does whatever it has to to remain in power, and is trying to gather the 12 Zodiac McGuffins in a bid to become a major player rivaling/surpassing the two central factions.

Anyway, on topic, what about X3? in theory and occasional practice (and with the right mods) you can create a titanic manufacturing and military empire capable of completily conquoring the universe.
