The USA 1910 expansion to TtR is also great, adding a few new variants, including some that counter the luck aspect of getting the long tickets in the original base game. It also comes with a set of full-size train cards to replace the miniature cards that come with the standard game.

Well worth the price of admission.

Looks like i'll pick it up then. That seems to be the prevailing theme for TTR. Fun, easy to play and everyone like it.

I played two games online last night, too test it out, and without the human contact there was still tension. Plus in my second game I came 5 points from winning, after I was 30 or so behind at games end.

Boston -> Miami, New York -> Los Angles, Atlanta -> Los Angles for the win. ;)

What are some good Risk variants, besides the ones at BGG? I don't really like those variants except for the extra borders and the simultaneous turns. Is there a diceless variant that isn't the 1 for 1 rule?

So, we've played Descent a couple of times now, and we're all pretty fucking smart when it comes to playing. Thus far, IMO, there's a point where the Overlord has a chance to win, in the early mid-game, if the dice fall right. After that, it's pretty much heroes all the way. Though, we don't have any of the expansions.

I said it earlier in this thread, but the fact that a player always has to be a DM/Overlord is a huge turnoff for me and Descent. What's playing one like?

It can be fun. I enjoy it, anyway, though we switch off.

It's not really a player/DM thing; the Overlord is actually the players' adversary. You're not supposed to pull punches or anything; you're supposed to try to kill them.

So no dice. Time to find a store either a little closer to home or one that doesn't want to pack my package in a box made from gold and precious gems.

I was having a similar problem getting a game called "Escape from Atlantis" out of England. As it turned out, I picked up the game for 1.99 (insert character for pound), but shipping to the US was going to be a pain.

In my case, I was willing to wait a long, long time- so I just found a friend in England who would store it for a while, and had it come back in baggage when a mutual friend went overseas to visit them.

So if you know someone who is likely to be visiting the states, and have someone here you can trust, TH ships to anywhere in the lower 48 for $8.00 flat shipping fee.

I've got my copy of Pitchcar on the way now...

Coming soon, to a front porch attached to my house near you...

Heroscape - Wave 6 - one of each (I'll eventually order duplicates of the commons)

Shogun - the retheming/re-working of Wallenstein. Should be good, and the new art/components look fantastic.

To Court the King - fixed dice and cards. Finally.

Tier auf Tier - stacking cute little wooden animals? Oh yeah.

    Himalaya 5 & 6 player expansion - an expansion to a game in my wife's top 5? That's a must buy.

BattleLore - Ooooooh. Yeah, I already have M44 and all the expansions, C&C:A and the expansions (#2 is P500, shipping soon), but I figure it'll be easier to get my wife (and some of my crew) to the table w/ the fantasy aspect of BattleLore. We'll see.

I played Shogun for the first time yesterday in a group of 5 people. Should be fun if you like that kind of game (military strategy / resource management). Lots of strategy involved, bidding on the "bonus cards", selecting which province gets which action, etc. The combat mechanic was interesting as well.

Next we played a game of Ruse & Bruise, again with 5 people. Very fun but the instructions could have been clearer, and the special ability of the Assassin card was confusing (only because it was poorly written).

Finally, we ended the afternoon with my very first game of Settlers of Catan! I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to playing again soon.

So, here's a problem I never imagined our gaming group would encounter. We have too many people.

We're averaging 7-9 people, now, on our bi-weekly boardgame night. This is great and everything, but I don't have a huge number of games. Our stable of frequent plays include Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Rheinlander, Arkham Horror, and (yes, I know) Munchkin.

How do people handle game nights with too many players? Do you just split up into separate groups (I'd prefer NOT to do this, but I guess it would work in a pinch). Or do you vote off members of your group and condemn them to the fate of being "that guy who was cast out of the geeky boardgaming group."

Anyone remember Fireball Island? It was the first boardgame I ever got as a kid, and with a few creative rule changes, a good game could go for 10 hours (my sister loved it, too).

    *sigh*

    Memories...

I miss Axis n Allies, too. We played on my buddy's pool table, ordered pizza, and usually played for 24 hours straight. Good times.

I just picked up Axis & Allies.

    Plus I've got Fortress America.

I'm thinking of combining the two and doing the 'barely technologically superior aliens invade during WWII' thing from the Harry Turtledove "WORLDWAR" series.

I'm currently trying to figure out just how far to upgrade the Aliens without totally overwhelming the defenders, and how to keep the Aliens from simply amassing forces and instead sticking to their global strategy like they did in the books.

I picked up Munchkin and Cthulhu 500 yesterday as birthday presents to myself. I'm hoping that we enjoy at least one of them so on my next paycheque I can go pick up the Paranoia Mandatory Fun card game and get that going.

I know Munchkin is fairly popular, but has anyone tried Cthulhu 500?

BGG reviews seem to point to it leaning a little too heavily in the wargame direction for my tastes. Still, Rackham as a company really interest me. I still need to hunt down a copy of Cadwallon.

    Battlelore expansion roadmap announced!

    http://blog.battlelore.com/en/

In summary, first Epic Battlelore for free in March, then comes the first add-on in April, "Call To Arms", with an army building system that's (big surprise) card-based. May brings "Specialist Packs", a couple of new units in a box. Count on each of these things being about $20. Single unit blisters will supposedly be available from the web, too.

Pretty sweet stuff, if you ask me.

Anyone ever heard of Jewels in the Attic? It's an awfully obscure game for young-ish players but I had some really fun experiences with it. The game popped back into memory while I was thinking about RPG design, as the game is technically role playing, although without any GM/referees or characters (some live-action roleplay was involved, particularly the device of designating actual rooms as different locations). It's chiefly focused on gamist player competition of acquiring items and using them to solve encounters; as BBG's photos show, you set an item disk over an encounter disk, line up their notches, and read the result corresponding to the letter shown through the item disk's hole. It might fail to do anything or force you to drop your item, or you'll solve it and earn a new item. The range of items is rather big and they each respond do different encounters differently, and as I recall the positive results were fairly intuitive but some trial and error was involved.

I was hoping to locate my copy of the game in the following week and run it here in OD&M, with me handling the actual items and reading/listing all the results. Spruce it up with some MS Paint play-along style graphics and we might end up with a game to play with a large casual group that's light-hearted and dead-easy to play.

Well, it's certainly be easier to play-by-post than Fireball Island; how would you handle knocking bridges down with fireballs?

Edit: Whoa, just got the beginning of a thought of a PBP The Omega Virus...

Hi my name is Spawnbroker, and I have a problem...

...I'm a board game addict. My other problem is that I am unable to find a group of similar hardcore board gamers. I once ran my friends through a game of 2nd edition Talisman and they told me to never play it with them again because somebody would die to a cardboard cut-out-in-the-jugular type situation. I love these types of games though. Btw, Twilight Imperium looks kick ass.

For those wondering how I got a copy of Talisman (with all the expansions), my parents own it...muahaha, yay gamer parents.

If you live in any reasonably-sized town, local game stores will often have game nights a few times a week. This is the best way to get a good game going, though it has the drawback of sometimes playing with fucktards.

I've had limited success getting my actual friends into deeper games on a more gradual basis. Gateways games are usually something like Carcassonne or Settlers of Catan. Once they get into these games, which are awesome, you can start sneaking in more complex ones without the cardboard decapitation. Sadly this also has a drawback when you realize that your very good friends are problem-player fucktards.

I got my wife on board with some 2-player games (Lost Cities, Balloon Cup, and Fjords). Now, by her own request, we play Power Grid (wicked complex) and other awesome games a few times a week. She is, happily, not a fucktard.

I'm currently playing a 1v1 (that's correct) game of Twilight Imperium (with expansion) with my buddy. We modified the rules very little and I'll have to post what's up in a bit. We played 2 hours of it last night and plan on finishing it sometime this week or next (unfortionately we're both very busy). There should be some pictures too.

Secondarily there is now also a Facebook group dedicated to TI. I recommend a search for it.

EDIT _ 3-24-07 - the freaking cat got into the game the week we left it to it's own devices. Just only now remembered to remedy this post.

A friend in Jr. High had A&A.

He had played it once before, so he brought it out and we set it up.

    He played allies.

America is bisected by the board; east coast is on the left-side, west coast is on the right side. When I asked him why he didn't move pieces to the opposide side, he explained that as US, you couldn't go from the left side of the board to the right side of the board.

I tried very hard to convince him. No dice.

We played twice more and the third time I got our other mutual friend in on it and he also agreed with the "can't go from opposite sides" ruling.

Finally, I located the rulebook (he had "lost" it) and found the paragraph that explained how to go from one side to the other.

To this day he insists we've always played it the correct way.
