[PRIME] Canadian Supertrip 2009 : Goin' to Seattle, eh?

Yes, Margaret. There is a Canadian Supertrip in 2009.

The majority of everything will match up with the schedule and route of last year, which is available in last year's thread until I get it all updated here.

The eastern branch of the trip starts in Edmonton and heads south to Calgary, where it turns westward through the Rocky Mountains into British Columbia. This group continues down through Kamloops toward Abbotsford, where it then crosses into the United States via Sumas, enroute to Seattle. The western branch starts in Vancouver, heading directly south through Richmond and Delta on the way to the Pacific Crossing @ 176th St. These two groups meet just south of Bellingham, where they traverse the I-5 in a mighty caravan southward.

As with previous years, drop some information here if you're interested in joining!

How It Works
The Canadian SuperTrip, or CST, is divided by stops known as Waypoints. A waypoint is our official stop to meet up with other Supertrippers along the route. Most waypoints are located where gas, snacks and washrooms are nearby. Each waypoint is allotted some time for members to get out and stretch their legs, giving everyone a short break. Supertrippers fall into two groups, Drivers and Passengers. Passengers, you are responsible for finding a ride and making your way to the waypoints. Payment comes in the form of your share of gas. Specifics can be arranged with the driver of your vehicle. We drive together in a caravan, keeping the group together between waypoints. The longer the line of cars, the more impressive this whole effort becomes.

If you want to be added to our list of participants, post here or contact b0wser to be added to the list. Use the following format for sending information.

Group Leader: This is the group's go-to guy, usually the most active person on the forums/internet. This person's main responsibility lies in relaying status updates between their group and the CST. This person is also responsible for getting their group together to depart from their location.
Location: City, State/Province where you live
Starting Waypoint: Our pre-selected stopping points on the route, pick the one closest to your location. This is where you will be joining Supertrip caravan.
Vehicle: Year, Make, Model
Riders: This includes your confirmed passengers
Unconfirmed Riders: Number of unconfirmed riders not listed here.
Space Available: Seats still available in your vehicle.
Contact: Your e-mail address, in addition you can add your MSN. One cell phone contact is required for each group.

What You'll Need
A Working Vehicle - This is a fairly long trip, and we don't want to scrape your steaming wreckage off the side of the road, so do basic maintenance before you go, meaning: change engine oil, check air filter, top off engine coolant and washer fluid.

Check active and spare tire pressures and tread wear and bring extra oil, coolant, fluids (brake, power steering, anything that ends in "fluid") to top off on the road with.

A spare set of car keys- you never know when you'll lock yourself out, so try to have an extra key if possible!

A Cell Phone - You or one of your riders will need to be carrying a phone. Cell coverage should be adequate along our routes, so a radio should not be required. If you're going you use your phone in the USA, you might want to be mindful about expensive international call charges.

The CST Phone Directory - This is a full contact list of people on the Supertrip. It will be e-mailed to you shortly before departure, this may happen a couple of times.

LEGAL IDENTIFICATION & CANADIAN PASSPORT - A Canadian Passport will be required to cross the border into the United States by the time the Supertrip gets there. If you don't have one, you can't join us. There's no debating it, because you won't be allowed to enter the country without it.

A Gallon Jug of Water - Good for you or your car. Other drinkables are good, but can't go in your car.

Non-perishable snackables - Food for the road, beef jerky is a good mainstay along with trail mixes and anything else you might like. Stay away from ideas like a cooler filled with sandwich fixins. It may sound like a cool idea, but takes up way too much space and is very impractical.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why bother? If I'm in the Lower Mainland, why not just drive myself?
A: Because it's just not cool to act like an ogre. We had a good turnout last year, and despite some slight miscalculations in timing, I think everyone had a decent time. Besides, it's a whole bunch of Canadians-- and we'll all probably be around for the partying at some point.

Q: How much for a seat if I have no car but want to come along?
A: That depends on the vehicle and how gas is being divided up, contact drivers who have space available to work out an arrangement.

Q: When must I join by?
A: Groups need to be properly identified and confirmed their place in the trip by August 1st. The CCST went with July 1, but our shorter distance lets us work with that extra month. It would be nice to sort out all of the people who need rides, and leaving that until the week before PAX is a terrible idea. If a group decides they want to join after August 1st, they must make sure they're at the appropriate waypoint to make the linkup. Posting here will also still be a great idea, because we'll have an idea that someone is trying to make it.

Q: How can I help make this baby happen?
A: Number One thing anybody can do to help make this happen is word of mouth, point them here, to the official Penny Arcade Expo website and to the forum thread. Participate in the thread, or come loiter in the #paforums_pax channel on irc.slashnet.org

Q: Did the thread/website just up and die or what?
A: Our website hasn't been put together yet, but it shouldn't take long to have online. The information in the thread will always be the same as on the website, when it's up and running.

Q: What hotel should I stay at?
A: This is up to you. There are three choices currently on offer, and it is highly encouraged that you book at one of the official hotels. You can get more information at the official PAX hotels page.

Q: When is the Canadian Supertrip going to arrive in Seattle?
A: The afternoon of the 3rd. We're not sure exactly when, but early to mid-afternoon should be an adequate span. We're looking to leave time available for those who join the 2008 Pre-PAX Dinner, which has not yet been scheduled.

    Yay!

The Amtrak takeover was pretty awesome last year. I hope the crew last year is up for that again... Considering carpooling is not an option for me.

Still up for chartering a bus maybe? :D

I was going to CCST it up, but this seems like the better option since I don't have a car and plane tickets across the border are ridiculously more expensive than ones that stay inside Canada.

Since I'll be flying into Vancouver, I'd like to meet up with you guys either on the bus or by hitching a ride with someone on here who's driving down. Are there a lot of people who take the bus? Is there a party-bus for those few hours that people usually take? I'd like to include some sort of roadtrip experience even if it's only 3 hours instead of 3 days.

We had about 10 people on the bus I took (Thursday).

There was a few who took the bus on Friday too.

It was pretty awesome. The best thing is the Greyhound station in Seattle is pretty much right next to the convention center and all the hotels.

If I weren't leading a group from Abbotsford, I'd most likely join the bus trip. Getting a bunch of people together on one bus is a great idea, especially if you're all sitting in the same area on the bus.

I'd be interesting in joining from Edmonton. I was tempted to make the drive and so some camping on the coast before PAX and catch the Sounders-TFC game on the 29th too. So put me down as a maybe with a confirmation to come by the end of next month?

Man I would love to check PAX out again this year, but right now I have paperwork sent to the government department in Nova Scotia for an ID update, a process that supposedly takes about 10 months. If I could attend, I would love to bus/train there on a thursday. Carpooling with friends is great and cheap, but they've being arriving later than usual as the years pass. Last year I hit downtown seatown at 6pm.

On another note, there's a gaming convention in Victoria called Gotta-con which is happening next weekend on the 6th-8th of February. Any Victorians or BCers interested or attending, feel free to post experience afterwards:

Just booked my vacation time for PAX.... so now I can officially state that I will be heading down this year (as if there was any doubt). Now I just have to start harrassing my enforcer friends to try to get one of those nifty black badges this time around.

Anyway, I'll probably be looking at doing the Amtrak trip again.... better known as the "Get Owned in Mario Kart DS by Parabola" trip.

If we do the same run as last year it's the 8907 leaving Vancouver at 8:00 am on September 3rd. (Yes it is already bookable). To try and improve on last years experience I think a laptop, the PAX08 DVD (if released in time) and some external speakers will be in order for the trip.

To come along a boarding pass, your passport and your DS will all be manditory. 8-)

Although, some people might argue that ANY method of getting out of Kamloops is, in the end, worth suffering a little bit for. Lesser of two evils and all that.

I'll likely be driving my crappy old 4runner down from Kelowna again. It contains enough space for 3 additional people. There is a slight chance, however, that I might be rocking a day or two early in victoria, which would put me in the boat with the island people (scary thought.. I've SEEN these people before!).

B0wser, please add an errata to my location. I'm actually living in New Chinatown which is not located on Vancouver island. I'm sure everyone knows where that place is located. I'm just announcing a gaming convention which is on its pilot event for the sake of those who are hosting it. Hopefully it might become something but it won't be happening this year it seems.

On a main note, I'm gonna have to wait 10 months until the CIC in Nova Scotia sends me my updated ID. If by fortune they send it before July, I might have a chance.

I'll post the bus trip specific details once you couple of organizers hammer it out.

I'm guessing Tr0tsky's still gonna be heading the bus trip up this year so all final decisions are in his capable socialist hands. I'm just giving a rough idea of departure date/time for those already expressing an interest.

Unless our fearless leader has been otherwise detained. I haven't seen him post here in like three days... I hope he's okay. o_O

better known as the "Get Owned in Mario Kart DS by Parabola" trip.

What can I say, I own at Mario Kart. Funny thing about that though is i barely played it at all, and I actually bought the game as a replacement for the MK DS I lost like a year before. I didn't even have anything unlocked.

Anyways I'm not the one to organize this so I leave this up to Trotsky. Who actually deserves credit for owning people at tetris.

Yah, I'll be trying to get the bus thing set up. I can check out charter/party bus options for the trip down, but I imagine they're pricey. If we're taking the regular bus, the one I'll be setting up will be Thursday morning again, so Sept 3. Last year we took Greyhound, not Amtrak, but they're both about the same (I've done both), so it'll just depend on the schedules.

Unfortunately, due to a plea bargain, I'm not allowed to talk about where I've been the past few days >.>

The bus trip worked out really well last year, with the 10 or so people we had. Mario Kart and Tetris were good times, and watching the pax dvd on someone's (Absinthe?) laptop as well. Anyway, I'll take a look into charter buses and see cost. Probably not worth it unless we have 15-20 people at least though.

D'oh you're right. It was Greyhound. I got mixed up with the OP. Once I looked at their dreadfull interface I remembered the annoyance of booking my bus tickets last year. lol.

The absolute convenience of their terminal being right next to the convention centre still makes Greyhound the best choice.

    For posterity however:
Greyhound: Sept 3 8:30am departure from Vancouver. Bus # 6501
Amtrak: Sept 3 8:00am departure from Vancouver. Bus # 8907

It was my DVD and ACC3SS's laptop. On Moe's PAX Attendee's Map, ACC3SS has pinned himself as a bus, so one would assume he'll also be joining us on the Greyhound this year again.... even though the slacker hasn't posted here yet. :P

I hope I can join whether or not I've got extra room. Both drivers have N's. We can take our exams before PAX, but I can only take mine 3 days before PAX. The other test can be taken in March. If we can get a full license, we can have some more passengers. :P

Or of course, if somebody has their full license and for some reason isn't driving and lives along the way, that works too. Let me know.

    I'll update.

I won't be doing the supertrip after all. But if anyone from my area needs a ride a few days ahead of schedule, send me a message. I'll be going on the 1st most likely.

    :D

I am likely busing, although I MAY change my mind and drive. 85% sure Greyhound.

Hopefully we'll have the PAX08 DVD to watch before September...

Hmmm, well I guess those of us taking the CST Greyhound could change from bus icons to maple leaf icons.

But then you'd have no bus icons being used.

And that might offend anyone with a pro-bus icon agenda. We are proud of the maple leaf but warry of offending others.... thsi may require a vote, or perhaps a referendum.

We Canadians are a very indecisive people. 8-)

Welcome to the Supertrip! The route does look a little inaccurate from a far zoom, but it's just fine when you zoom closer. Since you're in Williams Lake, you'd be able to pick between the Kamloops waypoint and Merritt.

I wouldn't mind chilling with people who are walking to PAX.

There's been no mention of it yet because SmallLady hasn't given me a specific sailing to post. Once there's a specific sailing planned, I'll throw it up here! It's all about group consolidation, so we don't have a few people on one boat and a couple on another and whatnot.

edit: I posted the basic information about the Victoria Clipper trip, now it just needs sailing infos.

Once there's some groups coming together from the area, then you'd likely be able to plan to meet up with someone in Calgary.

OR! You could try and convince some people into forming a group and driving! Costs do go down quite a bit when you drive with a group and then split your accomodation costs with that group, so it's always worth considering.
