What is the best way to go about leveling? Right now I'm running both my friend and my alts through instances which is giving solid xp. Should we stop doing this and swap to questing at some point?

The alts are 30 and I'm running them through SM at the moment which nets about a level a run.

So I cannot get the Octopus page to load at all. I've downloaded everything recommended on the front page and it won't open the page.

I'm assuming Octopus is still out there somewhere because you guys are downloading it. Any thoughts?

From what I understand, running through instances gives better XP than just plain questing. Personally, I'm leveling from quests because I tend to play at weird hours when nobody is around to do instance runs. Still feels quick to me!

The Octopus page has been down for at least a month. I use HotKeyNet which works great and is regularly updated.

HotKeyNet, got it. I've just had my puppet on /follow, which still works, but it would go a lot quicker if he was contributing a few fireballs to my rogue.

So this still works? If i have a level 80 friend group up with my two characters and then clear out Scarlet Monestary for me, i'll get fast exp?

I'm just a little confused because i read some stuff earlier in this thread that made it sound like this was going to be nerfed at some point, but not sure if that really happened.

Having not done it, I don't know for certain but from what I understand you still get the 'reduced xp' penalty from having a higher level player run you through (as you would normally, dual-boxing or not).

Dual-boxing your two 'account linked' characters will still give you 300% xp, though... it'll just be 300% of the reduced amount. Any quest turn-ins will not be subject to the reduced xp penalty, however.

The speed at which the higher level char can destroy mobs, coupled with a plentiful supply of them, plus more money/better drops for your characters is what makes instance running desirable.

A SM Cath run nets you about a level per run from 22-30 or so in my experience in the last few days.

I would personally say run SM Cath till 45 or so, but make sure to do all the quests for each dungeon. They give Northrend size quest xp when you're RaFing.

The Nesingwaring chain is also really good too.

Okay, trust me when I say I know very, very little about scripting. But a few minutes poking around with HotKeyNet and it's very easy. It even gives you, line for line to copy, the script to control two screens at once. It's on the HotKeyNet webpage under "2 WoW's one Computer", or something similar.

Follow the instructions exactly, load up the script into HotKeyNet and it works. It takes about five minutes to set up.

Thanks for this info! I'll definitely head to SM once I get to the early 20s. I'm at level 14 right now, so shouldn't take long to get there. I'll prolly see about doing at least one run thru Wailing Caverns and SFK just for the quests.

Ok, since I've been leveling with my mate over the last week I'll make a listing of what we've done so far. Now while most of this was done with just the two of us being run through with my paladin we did do a proper level run through of WC, SFK and ZF which gave mega xp, so your mileage may vary slightly. I'm leveling a feral Druid, my mate is leveling a Shaman as enhancement.

    1-10: Starter quests.

11-15: Ragefire Chasm. Make sure you take all quests in advance. Use a higher level to clear for you. Keep running it till you hit 15.

Buy 15 stacks of Wool Cloth to do Donation of Wool once you hit level 12 and hand them in at Silvermoon, Undercity, Thunder Bluff then the Orc and Troll Clothmasters.

16-22: Complete any class quests you have lying around. Start collecting the quests for Wailing Caverns, then make a run of it, preferably with a group your own level or have a higher level take you through it. It isn't as suited for large pulls like RFC and SM are so you want that equal level group if possible and groups for WC are pretty common.

Head over to Silverpine Forest and pick up the flight point for Sepulcher. Grab these 3 quests and complete them. Continue to run SFK till you hit 22.

23-25: Swap from SFK to SM Cath and run till you hit 25. Get used to it, you'll be seeing a lot of this place. If you've got a prot paladin at 80 you can make short work of this place in two pulls then consecrate everything down.

25-28: Now you get to step outside again and do some questing. Head down to 1k Needles and pick up all the central quests. (aka no Shimmering Flats) Make sure you pick up the Test of Faith chain. Complete these, then head over to Stonetalon to continue the Test chain by speaking to Braug Dimspirit for the Test of Lore quest. While you're in the Ashenvale portion of the chain, make sure to grab the flight point and pick up the Ashenvale Hunt chain and kill the 3 named mobs while you're walking around. You can also pick up the Donation of Silk quests at 26 at all 5 Clothmasters, which'll give you about 40k xp after handing them all in.

28-36: Collect all the Scarlet Monastery quests bar Into The Monastery. Run SM and complete them. This will allow you to complete the final part of the Test of Lore chain which you can hand in back at 1k Needles. You'll be heading that way shortly.

Continue running SM Cathedral till you hit 34, pick up Into The Monastery and complete it. By now you should be getting a 2/3 of a level per SM Cath run if you're being run through by an 80. Keep doing this till you hit 36.

36-41: Now head over to Stranglethorn and complete the hunting Mastery quest chains. This should get to you around 39-40.

You can also collect the Donation of Mageweave quests once you reach 40 which should speed things up for you to the tune of 75k xp.

Take the kill quest Bring the End for Razorfen Downs and complete it, then escort Belnistrasz from his prison. One thing to watch out for is that you can't kite massive amounts of the under mobs around the spire that Amnennar is on, you have to deal with one pack at a time.

41-42: Back to the SM Mobile! Keep working on Cathedral till you hit 42. Then you're done with it forever! [tiny]Till someone wants you to run their alt through there in the future.[/tiny]

42-45: Head over to Tanaris, accept all the quests in Gadgetzan and complete them. This is a little vague, but you're basically doing the kill quests for the various Wanted! guys and the bandits/assassins/shadow mages, then picking up the pirate quests and doing those. Make sure to pick up the quest to take the port over to Booty Bay.

45-48: Pick up all the quests for Zul'Farrak. It'll probably take you two trips to get the scarab shells and troll tempers if you're in a PuG. Fortunately they're fairly common at this level and a mob will give you around 700xp per kill if you're with people your own level.

Head over to Booty Bay to hand in the quest from Tanaris to McKinley and pick up The Captain's Chest and Stranglethorn Fever quests for some quick 15-20k xp each. Grab a bottle off the beach while you're killing the Sea Giant and head over to Princess Poobah the island for Message in a Bottle.

48-52: Start collecting quests for Maraudon. There are lots and lots of quests in this place so its definately worth hitting up. You really want a higher level to be running you for this one as it can take a long long time in an equal level group. The Shadowshard Fragments quest starts goes grey at 52 so we're cutting it fine here but you should just make it.

Once you're done with Maraudon, pick up some Runecloth for the Donation quest chains, which is another 150k xp.

Thats as far as I've gotten at the moment but I figure now the best bet is to hit up Sunken Temple for the class quests and regular quests, then the Cauldron chain in the Plaguelands followed by the BRD/BRS quests. (Since the Shaman's account doesn't have Outlands linked to allow Ramparts.) Ramparts runs would probably be fairly effective at leveling from that stage.

Question, now I've hit 60 as the recruiter, can I gift levels to my friends characters? He had no issue with level gifting, but it says I have not gained enough levels to gift to his characters, even though Druid has reached 60.

nope. recruit gives levels to recruiter, not the other way around.

Basically you only get friends summons and 3xp as the recruit.

    The recruiter gets

    levels for alts
    free swift mount
    3xp
    friend summon
    month of wow?

    RAF Question:

I am the Recruit, once I hit 60, how does the recruiter receive his 'free levels for alts'? Do I, as the recruit, have to click on his alt to bestow the levels upon him, or does he do it himself?

Also, what if I were to level to 60, and then transfer my character off to my main account. Can the recruiter still then collect his 'free levels' at a later date? The recruit account would no longer have a level 60 character, wasn't sure if that was necessary to receive the free levels.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Recruit gifts the levels to the recruiter. You have to be physically near each other in game, and you right click their portrait to gift them. You have to do this all before the 3 month time period expires. If you wait a day extra, the levels for gifting will be gone, and blizzard will not give them back. Look around for a macro for doing the gifting, it's great fun to stand in a busy city and spam 30 levels rapidly onto an alt and have everyone around you confused as hell.

If you transfer the character to your main account without gifting the levels prior to the transfer, I am pretty positive they will be lost. The levels are tied to the character on the 2nd account.

    Here is that macro
    /script GrantLevel("target",1)
(where target is the character name you are granting to)

I'm sorry to hear that. Scripting isn't everyone's cup of tea. If I had known that HotkeyNet would end up being used mainly for multiboxing WoW, it would probably have had a graphical interface. On the other hand, scripting has advantages -- it makes the program more powerful and flexible than it could be otherwise.

Seriously, I see scripting and whatnot and my mind just kinda goes blank. But you've made it very easy to set up a basic dual-box. (And it was free, so thank you.)

And by basic, I mean my rogue (main) sinister strikes while my mage (puppet) casts fireball. Mounting is linked, and I have an /assist macro linked. I also have Blind and Frost Nova linked, in case things get too crazy and....well, that's about it. But I've gotten to 40 in less than 36 hours played using this method. Which could be very slow, but it's the fastest I've ever done it.

Ok, here is my system specs:

    Q9550 overclocked to 3.6ghz
    HD4870x2 vid card
    4g of ram
    Vista 64
My monitor is 1920x1200 native resolution...

No matter how low the res is in windowed mode (800x600) one of the windowed mode accounts (WoW) will freeze up and then eventually everything will lock up and I have to do a hard reboot.

Do I need to reset the resolution of the monitor to whatever I make the in game settings?

I can't even begin to start doing the macros and HKN or Octopus until this is resolved...any suggestions?

HotKeyNet is what I use. I dunno how hard it would be for other games, but with no experience in scripts I was able to uh...copy and paste the pre-written ones for WoW. Not that hard, people.

And spend a few moments on the site and you can easily learn how to tweak things a bit.
