I've got a great business design once the banks have enough liquidity to start making relatively large small-business loans again and batteries get powerful enough.

I figure a few years of working in law and my credit will be good enough that I can pull it off.

ok jigrah I am not continuing this. You live on a different planet so i can understand how certain fundamentals would be different there.

When you tell me that poor people are hungry because they are bad people, you can just really go fuck yourself. You're wrong on such a large level about humanity and the state of things that I can only imagine the social structure which you grew up in. What possible influence, what malevolent force could have created such a fortress-like belief that people are inherently able to remove themselves from poverty or any undue circumstance simply by making the proper choices.

People who are in need of financial help are not inherently bad, devious, or lazy, jigrah.

And yes, you are a bad person for thinking and saying it.

I bet angel investors are going to be on the rise, but that is just because I am a risk seeker and I think investors should be as well.

I just remembered a game we played in Economics senior year.
It was a computer online game thing
Basically each group of 4 had a company they ran that each sold the same product. And we competed against each other to see who could run it the best.

My group destroyed the economy bu throwing all of our money into R&D until we had the best product that you could make and sold it for $10 then our competitors and all of the sudden every other group went bankrupt but we coulden't afford to make enough product to meet demand and where flat broke and went out of business.

    Our teacher was pretty pissed.

    Ever play the fishing game?

Where everyone is a fisher, and you spend all game trying to catch the most fish, and by the end of the game, everyone loses because all the fish are gone?

    I fucking loved that game.

Both of those are awesome, and I commend you, Bucketman.

I remember in one of my econ classes the prof had us doing a trading floor simulation game. I realized after a few rounds that he had built the game specifically to demonstrate a particular situation in which the producers all get totally fucked. I was on the producers' team.

So of course, in between rounds, I, as discretely as possible, organized a cartel amongst the other producer players and we simply withheld any sales for ten minutes. The prof started asking "aren't you guys done yet?" And the buyers were all frantically shouting "NO NO WE'RE NOT DONE." Then I broke the cartel by making one sale for all my product, way above what they ought to have paid, and announced it really loudly.

Pretty much everyone in the class was pissed at me except for the professor, who was near to tears laughing at us.

    Hahaha nice nice nice.

Can't wait for that to happen to OPEC.

Unfortunately, OPEC has the safety valve of everyone cheating a little bit. If someone mocks up a fusion reactor that generates more electricity than it requires to run, that would be the catalyst.

I should note that some of the other producers also made out pretty good, namely the ones who were standing right next to me, but that some of the others lost everything in that round. (though quite a few buyers "lost accounts" due to both failure to spend invested money and overpaying a ludicrous amount for the commodity) I just can't believe all the buyers really started thinking something about the game had significantly changed and that it was something other than me being an asshole.

You hit one correct assumption and that is I have a fortress like belief that people are inherently able to remove themselves from anything. You know when you are a kid and people are like "You can do anything you put your mind to" I truly and wholly believe in that.

Now, you assumed completely different things based on the word values. I don't mean lazy, devious and bad. I really want communities values to grow again, where local communities take care of each other more because they have to now. Because they need each other and an outside power isn't going to have the means to help them.

Yeah I was all 'what recession?'

Then Mori lost his job and then his father lost his job too

So his mother is panicking to put it mildly, but hey, at the moment we still have our respective houses and we can still afford to put food on the table and even to buy a few other luxuries

It's hard to comprehend times where one is actually, truly desperate

I just want to buy rusted out classic cars, clean up the exterior and upholstery, lift out the entire drivetrain (minus whatever is reasonably salvageable), drop in all-electric engines, and fix the original dashboard to show speed, etc, and sell them as luxury vehicles. Base the business out of San Francisco and then start exporting to Japan and the East coast. Second shop opens in NYC. Custom jobs on cars you already own available by commission.

There's a recession? I hadn't noticed. Everything has pretty much been exactly the same for me.
The only change I've noticed so far is that people are talking about a recession.

This is probably like that "year of the shark" bullshit tv news was pushing for awhile.

Lowest incidence of shark attacks in many years, but they had to report something, so year of the shark it became.

yeah exactly. I feel like when we had a real depression in this country, people were literally starving to death. Now what? The price of gas went down? I guess some people got laid off, but that seems like it happens a lot, with or without a depression. Some companies flounder while others flourish, it's the ebb and flow of industry. You know what this reminds me of? Y2K.

i don't know if you're being serious, but the job loss rate has risen quicker and higher than is has been in over 30 years. 598,000 people lost their jobs in the month of january alone. people can't get credit, so they can't make payments, so they lose their shit and the owner's lose the potential money garnered by the purchase.

it's not like in 1929 people the stock market fell and then there were breadlines. this shit takes time, and it's only been months since the initial catalyst or "crash" of people talking about the economy.

That fusion is really cool but not it. This involves treating water with magnets to make the water magnetic and using super magnets to pull it around a turbine.

The idea still needs work, but I think it could be at least a good science fair project.

I don't know, maybe you're right, I haven't been paying a lot of attention to this stuff. It's hard to take it seriously though when the company you work for not only hasn't laid anyone off, but literally can't hire people fast enough.
to be fair, that's a really myopic view you have

of course there are people that are doing very well currently, no one said otherwise
but it is a very real fact that a lot of people have been hit hard and unemployment is quite high and looks like it will continue to rise

that's great your employer is doing so well, but that doesn't mean many other businesses are increasing layoffs
