    Okay, those announcements are pretty good.

    I assume the prices on the songs will vary by the length and the content.

    I am listening to the Goldeneye Source soundtrack, and it is full of some pretty fantastic remixes. Bass to fuck and back, these are some "dope-ass beats."

    it has to install Quicktime I think, as iTunes uses it to play music (or something). Bonjour let's you do wireless printing!

    Bonjour is used for library sharing I think. Nothing I have works with it though, I assume it only works with Apple shit. I use TVersity for media sharing, which works with everything (and much better than WMP media sharing).

    One thing that (i think) no store has gotten right is the quality of the files. If I'm paying for it, I don't want 128kpbs AAC because it doesn't sound very good. I think Amazon used to sell VBR v0 MP3's but i hear they're moving to v2, which sucks. I like my regular music to be in 320kpbs or v0 and my classical/jazz in lossless.

    Ok so here is what I've never understood and what wikipedia couldn't tell me. If you can quanitfy the quality of sound in a digital recording and pretty much everyone everywhere will tell you vinyl is better, what would be the necessary level of kbps to get a vinyl quality sound in a digital file?

    Vinyl's quality can be preferred for two reasons:

    1) Old records have that classic crackle and pop.

    2) Vinyls are mastered differently. Many CDs nowdays are mastered towards loudness, washing out the finer details. Vinyls are not.

    I love the depth and (is it way too corny to say this?) the sort of audio texture you get listening to vinyl. That said, much as investing in the ability to convert my vinyl to .mp3 format is intriguing, I am way too broke and sentimental to give up my Bang and Olafsun Beogram turntable in favor of something more high-tech.

    edit: an interesting quote from that article:
    If you buss compress everything, when the kick drum hits it's sucking back everything from the mix. I don't want to hear stuff pump. I want my dynamics intact that I recorded. I don't want everything to be one dynamic.[9]
    this is interesting because that's actually evolved into a recording technique, where it started as a necessity

    you can hear it on Merriweather Post Pavilion in a few places where the kick or heavy bass temporarily sucks everything else out of the mix. it's kind of dramatic when used correctly.

    I hate iTunes but it's the only real service of its kind in Canada.

    I hate iTunes because it assumes I am a criminal and so every song is encoded with DRM which puts a whole bunch of restrictions on it.

    But Meiss, they have the ability to remove the DRM! That's true, but you have to "upgrade" them, which actually entails you paying more for songs just to remove some arbitrary bullshit that they put there in the first place.

    Just give me my music, asshole.

    i have never had an issue with DRM and itunes

    and i pirate 99% of my music

    itunes does get pretty crappy once you have a lot of music to manage though, unless there's some secret i'm unaware of

    Does the price match the quality of craftsmanship and components that have gone into making it? Probably.

    Does it proportionally match the improvement in sound quality over a turntable that's 1% of the price? There is no fucking way on earth.

    There are some pretty atrocious examples of the dynamic range/buss comp/loudness problem on youtube

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQyPF3TwNT4&fmt=18

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmex_4hreQ&feature=related&fmt=18

    this is why vinyl is better, in the case where the vinyl was properly mixed and not pressed after compression. the problem with it lies in that vinyl degrades over time and with each play, so ideally you'd have your fresh vinyl recorded to a lossless digital format to get the best possible sound quality.

    or the record companies could just stop fucking with the mix and release proper digital versions

    Man, vinyl is not better. CD is better in every concievable way, and if it isn't, then SACD is, or if you prefer then press Blu-rays with uncompressed PCM soundtracks, then it can't possibly BE any better, you basically have the fucking master tracks on a disc.

    The only thing vinyl has going for it is that it's analog. There's no "bit rate" that could approach a continuous analog signal, it would have to be infinite and that's probably too much data to fit on one CD...

    So take the infinite "bit rate" of vinyl vs;
    * compressed dynamic range
    * lousy stereo seperation
    * "wow" and "flutter"
    * crackles, pops from wearing out, yes they wear out even if you keep them clean.
    * warping
    * feedback/rumble

    Of course if a CD is mastered poorly it might not sound as good as a well-mastered record, brand new out of the box and played on the best turntable in the world... But in every other case the CD will sound better.

    I'm at roughly the same library size, give or take a few gigs, iTunes on Windows freaked the fuck out when I tried to re-import my library after reformatting. It just randomly skips songs while importing that are obviously there, not to mention I got huge slowdown when searching and using anything but list view. I was forced to switch to Winamp for now (and maybe Songbird once they have Watch Folders)

    works great on OS X though
