new TV: LCD or plasma

So, we might get a new tv with our tax return. We want to get something HD and large-ish, like in the 40 inch range. I don't know very much about newer tvs though. Most of my friends don't know much about the subject either.

So what are the advantages/disadvantages of LCD and plasma TVs? They were priced about the same at the store today.

    I did a quick comparison between 42 inchers on Newegg and LCD and plasma displays were priced pretty closely, but I noticed that the LCD had a much greater resolution. I'd be leaning towards LCD, but like I said, I'm no expert.

    Hm. Those links are very informative. The first seems very plasma-biased though.

    Is burn in an issue anymore?

    Hmm, far from being biased towards plasma, I think the first article was mostly trying to provide a rational response to the popular notion that plasma is dying. But irregardless (yes, it's not a word, whatever) of what they say, that is what is happening, plasma is slowly going the way of the dinosaurs. Burn in on plasma displays is apparently not much of a problem anymore URL="http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6449_7-6844370-1.html"]ref.[/URL. Honestly, it seems to be that LCD is your best bet. Here's another article about plasma vs. LCD displays. Basically, you can a 1080p LCD display for $800 + shipping or a 720p plasma for $850 with shipping included (obviously this is just one site, but the prices should be generally reflective of what you're going to be able to find). To me, it seems that the advantages of LCDs of this size/price outweigh the advantages of counterpart plasmas, but judge ye yourself.
