Questions about PA itself.

Jazz SamuraiJazz Samurai Registered User regular
First off, sorry if this is the wrong forum ... the only one that seems "more suited" would be SE++ and I know better than to do this there.

So then, my questions:

- Did Tycho and Gabe actually live together back in the day?
- What happened to Safety Monkey and Batjew? Are they not even affiliated with PA anymore?
- Has PA always been their main source of income? How did they afford stuff back when the site wasn't huge?
- Why does Tycho seem to do 90% of the writing for the site (as in news posts and such)? Does Gabe not have as much interest or does he do more "behind the scenes"?

I would've emailed them but neither of them have ever answered an email from me ... so yeah.

yup

    1) Yes, I believe so.
    2) Batjew and Safety Monkey have split to do thier own thing. I believe they are still friends with Gabe and Tycho.
3)Gabe used to work in retail in some technology store (bestbuy or something I forget now, it's how he met Kara too). I think Tycho was a system admin for a school. They used to run the site off of donations.
4)Tycho writes and Gabe draws, that's the way it has been since forever.

And sometimes Gabe draws and Tycho writes, which we've (un)fortunately been the victims of for the past 2 updates.

Quoted cause I thought it was funny. Since you obviously meant to switch the two around, with Gabe writing and Tycho drawing.

Thanks for the quick answers all, one thing though:

I meant like, 90% of the front page posts are by Tycho as well. The write/draw split is fine for the comic, but I'd love to see Gabe do as much front-page stuff as Tycho, since I find him to be the wittier of the duo.

That's because he only writes when he has something witty he wants to say.

Gabe's prose is notably inferior to Tycho's, and Gabe has mentioned before that he's not comfortable with writing the main news posts.

I personally think that Tycho and Gabe have a roughly equivalent level of different but complementary wit.

It's not inferior, but the difference is notable. One is aware of his audience, the other has his nose buried in a well-thumbed Roget's.

Tycho complicates his sentences with way too many clauses--it's like he's deliberately thwarting any attempts to map his sentences. I only read his posts anymore if the comic needs some kind of setup (which it usually doesn't).

I say Gabe's the man. But then the whole thing is an act, right? I'm sure in real life, the actor portraying Tycho isn't as laughably pretentious as Tycho's prose.

I'd say Tycho only rarely gets too wordy for his own good.

I never get the impression he is just thesaurisizing his stuff. You can usually tell when people do that, but he is skilled in the ways of diction.

Did you translate that from English into Latin then back into English?

...a doctrine which may, I fear, appear wildly paradoxical and subversive. The doctrine in question is this: that it is undesirable to believe a proposition when there is no ground whatever for supposing it true. I must, of course, admit that if such an opinion became common it would completely transform our social life and our political system; since both are at present faultless, this must weigh against it. - Bertrand Russell
