I think I would prefer her thought bubble to be much larger. I like the lobster (crab?)!

hermit crab! he's supposed to be taking off with her shoe, i think i might try to emphasize that some more.

thought bubble larger? so like, move her over to the left and let it go from the top to the ocean?

if its because i posted pip-boy, its because bomb noted that she looks like him. ITS JUST THE SMILE.

also i hate children. i really hope some of these places i plan on applying for freelance with arent like, "so.. why do you like children?"

i'd come out with a complete schrute answer.

    "because they're necessary."

Well I'm assuming this is for some sort of editorial piece? At least in theory? I just think the girl's imagination should be a focal point, and I don't get that at all from the current arrangement. It was the very last thing I noticed in the picture. It's kind of in a dead zone. If it was larger, and maybe cropped by the upper right corner I think it would help the piece mucho. The styling and renders are nice. I hope my critiques don't make me sound like a jerk.

The flat ocean horizon is sharply straight compared to the rounded curves of the rest of the piece. Looks nice though.

it's a nice compliment that you're comparing me to beavo but the only thing similar is that i'm now using the pen tool. oh, and i stole her background style in the first one. i just happen to be trying to go for some kid-related stuff, like she has as of late. so there you go.

@ tam -- tried blue dress on the black lady -- the colours that work are too similar to the mirror colour, and the saturated blue that DOESN'T blend in with the mirror burns my retinas

The first image looks like a slam-dunk for any Women's magazine as-is and with fashion tweaking any teen mag as well.

The second one doesn't immediately suggest the intended audience to me.

I think your shapes and concepts are very nice. Unfortunately... they feel soulless? They don't feel very organic. They remind me of clipart.

My fiance does stuff with strong shapes like you, but she breaks it up with patterns, slight shadows, and subtle textures. It goes a long way to making a computer image seem warm and alive.

you know, while i know what clipart is.. i don't understand what separates it from any other piece of art.. just that one is used in a multitude of pieces/places (which is i guess what i'm going for, since i'm trying to appease several types of places with one piece).

these are difficult for me to know how to change without really specific crits, as .. these aren't really my normal thing.. so it already feels somewhat 'soulless'. the hope is that someone will see something in it they like and when i'm focusing on a project, that's when the life will come out.

Well you are right, technically that would be 'clip' art. But it doesn't have to look like clip art.

And what I mean by 'look like clip art' is a nebulous, I agree. To me, it tends to to look like something with no real interest, no real punch or personal style quirk. A bit... boring.

i know i shouldn't be going for speed, but ... 20 minutes! woo!
i dont know why i dont draw cartoon noses ... ive had the same 'doodle' style for nearly 8 years now, you'd think i would've fixed that.

I actually like the very first one the most, the head up looks forlorn. The head down looks more provocative. Also the black woman would be smiling with an ass like that.

this is what i thought too, but everyone disagreed! so i changed it!
now i feel like she's peeking over her shoulder at herself, all, "damn im so sexy i make myself cry" as opposed to an open-throated SIIIIIIIIIGH I HATE MY LIFE BECAUSE I AM NOT SIZE 0

but i like it both ways, honestly, i was just surprised by the consensus

Yeah. It does! I think its very marketable too. I could very easily see it in a teen girl magazine next to some dating advice column!
