I've been looking to branch out my musical pallette recently but the trouble is I've only really got a few bands and one or maybe two particular styles that I really like.

So I'm hoping someon here could point out some bands that I might like based on the sort of stuff I've got at the moment. The bands/artists I've got that I really love at the moment are:

Keane (first an foremost)
Howie Day
Joshua Radin
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Jeremy Kay
Fountains of Wayne
Guided by Voices
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Margot and the Nuclear So and So's
Aqualung
Copeland
Queen
Survivor
Steppenwolf
Bon Jovi
The Beatles
Rolling Stones

So if anybody could recommend some new bands that are in the same style as some of those it'd be terrific and I'd be super grateful

    Do you like any of coldplay's stuff? to me it seems kinda like keane (I like them both).

    I've only ever actually heard one song of Coldplay's (get the torches and pitchforks). But I like that one. I'll check out some of their other stuff

    Well, Pandora claims that the following bands are "similar artists" to Keane:
    - Coldplay
    - Death Cab For Cutie
    - Snow Patrol
    - Muse
    - The Verve

    Well, I've got nothing against any of those bands, but I will say that Pandora's idea of "similar" must be pretty broad, with the exception of Coldplay--that seems dead on, instrumentally at least. But like I said, nothing wrong with those bands--but I'll suggest a few that I'd group a little closer to Keane...sort of.
    - Thirteen Senses (Don't be thrown off by the stupid name. Rant warning:
    They unfortunately followed the traditional formula of band-name douchebaggery--"Okay, pick a number. Now pick a noun that has nothing to do with the number, or that can't naturally occur in the quantity implied by the number. Now put them together. Man, we're really clever, ironic, and mysteriously profound.
    )
    - Aqualung ( Vocally similar to Keane, but considerably mellower musically.
    - Mobile (Um...I think they're Canadian?)
    - VHS or Beta (Certainly a different sound than Keane, but they utilize some very similar atmospheric EQ. Man, I love this band.)
    - Radio 4 (Something about them just seems similar to me, I'm just not sure what. Maybe I'm crazy.)

    When you say Keane, are you referring to their first two albums, or their new pop one?

    its extremely cliche but since someone else said coldplay i'll do the obligatory radiohead post.

    it can seem really eccentric and inaccessible but doesnt demand nearly as much focus to appreciate as classical/electronica/free jazz

    and their output thus far (minus the first album which was a glorified demo) is basically the closest any band today will get to being as important as The Beatles.

    Calling bullshit on the radiohead/beatles comparison.

    The beatles redefined pop music. Radiohead influenced (but didn't define) alternative music. They have little influence on pop music, except insofar as what Coldplay picks up... but Coldplay themselves are atypical of pop music, which is largely RnB.

    I would say Timbaland is the only artist today with any claim to Beatles status.

    I dug it considerably, but it was definitely out of left field.

    Either way, given that I would recommend:

    Aqualung
    Ben Folds Five
    Backfield (I was pissed when I found them, years after I came up with the name)
    Bon Iver
    Cat Power
    Chase Pagan
    Copeland - if you only go find one of these bands, make it this one, I think you'll dig it.
    The Gaslight Anthem
    Secret Machines
    Pedro the Lion
    Sufjan Stevens

    I've already started forming a deep love of Aqualung. And I've got 2 weeks with sod all to do now so I'll be checking out a lot of these bands. I appreciate the recommendations guys, really. You're all awesome

    The greatest band to come out of Canada in a long time, I just saw these guys in concert tonight, and they are undeniably great. Their songs vary from punk to folk, but all of them are lyrically clever and musically solid. I give you:

    There are a lot of great suggestions in here. If you're into new up-and-coming bands, I would say subscribe to NPR's Second Stage podcast. They have a new song every day in similar genres as to what you listed. There are some iffy days, but I've found some amazing bands through it; to name a few:

    The Airborne Toxic Event
    Balmorhea
    Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
    Another Robot Sunset
    City and Colour
    The Everyday Visuals

    Take a listen through the archives and you'll probably find some stuff you dig.

    And if you like Howie Day and Joshua Radin, try Matt Nathanson. He's got a similar singer-songwriter sound. If he's ever in your area, definitely take the opportunity to see him live. Amazing performance, and his banter in between songs is hysterical.

    Yeah, if it wasn't for my dad I never would have heard of Tom Petty, Queen, Survivor, Steppenwolf, Bon Jovi, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and all that sorta stuff. In fact I'll add that lot to the OP. See if I can't scare up some stuff that's like that

    'Boy named sue' deserves a special mention. Love it!

    Of course, Bob Dylan has some stunning songs, though I find his vocals rather dire at times. Don't think twice is a good starter for 10.

    Dave Edmunds - I knew the bride.

    Lonnie Donnegan is worth a look at for mainly comic value - some cracking tunes though. Tom Dooley as a jump base.
