Two companies of Castellans sounds like it would be expensive, dollar wise that is... I'm still waiting on the local store to get their copies of the book in. Doubt around here we'll be getting anywhere near 2k point games anytime soon (thats a lot of men) but for those that have got some games in what would be a good lower point encounter level?

It would be 120 dollars, but I'm just gonna grab 'em from Neil for 90. Considering they're 135 points per company, they're actually cheaper than the other infantry, not including commands.

Hmmm. Grey Company with Banner of the King and Aragorn? Worth it? It's would be a ton of point. and I'd only be able to have 4 companies for fluff reason.

Considering those new Grey Company metal minis they just released are very similar to the Rangers of Middle-earth I'm sure you could. Even the description of the Rangers box calls them the Rangers of the North.

You know what I love about this game? I can look at your post and then just look up the units in the book without having to own any codexes/army books.

    Such a refreshing change.

So, how fun is this game to play, tactically? I've been eying my LOTR minis for a while, and rebasing some in WH style bases, so this looks pretty cool.

I have a reasonable number of Easterlings already. They do lack the trolls and insane heroes that mordor gets, but they do have heavy cavalry.

Well, the Fallen Realms can take most of the Ring Wraiths as Epic Heroes without having to ally. And you get Mumaks. And half troll marauders. And Khandish Chariots (which are amazing). And the Easterlings in general are some of the best infantry in the game.

The Khandish chariots seem too Japanese, too me. However, a simple model swap replacing the rider with an Easterling would probably do the trick. GW's "original" designs look far too much based on real world examples, which the movie creators went out of their way to avoid.

I actually already have an unassembled khandish chariot from a while ago.

Word. I'll probably assemble what I have, and throw an easterling on it.

I'm not really pleased with what GW did with the Haradrim and Khandish, honestly. They look too much like real world cultures. But not enough to pass them off as one (that Samurai style flag on the back of the horse archers is a pain to remove!)

Its kind of uncomfortable to blatantly base your armies off real world cultures then label them as the "fallen realms" Even 18th/19th century historians weren't that brutal.

With the massive price inflation GW has been under ever since 1998, metals honestly don't seem all that expensive, generally. Of course, their LotR prices are much more reasonable (maybe because of the license contract?), so LotR plastics are cheaper relative to metals than WH plastics. I kind of like metal because the minis are solid and don't get knocked around as easily. Big monsters are a nightmare if you don't have the tools to drill holes and use connecting bits, though.

Yet another reason that LotR are the only minis I generally buy(Occasionally), aside from my love of Tolkien. Cheaper, better quality, and you don't need as many.

On another note, looks like the local (20 minute drive) independent game store has been closed down for some time, so I shall have to do some searching. I can order men online, but I prefer to buy paints and sprays in person, also, you know, playing with other people. I will not drive all the way to Dallas in order to play with plastic soldier men. :x

What's everyone's opinions on Avenger Bolt Throwers for Gondor? They look nice and the models are pretty cool. Each company has a 4 out 6 chance to cause between 5 and 9 str six hit.

I'm getting three for my 1000 point list, that's what I think of them.
Also a Battlecry trebuchet, because they're cool too, but slightly more prone to misses.

So, I picked up the rules and more Easterlings, been assembling them. Flipped through the rules, and from what I gather, unlike in the skirmish game (and mostly in WHFB), archers are actually worth fielding? Seems that they can actually do their points worth in damage. Especially if I fielded Haradrim archers.

So guess who won a 1k WOTR torny? If you said me you guessed right. Things I learnt from this tourny:-
•Archers are great. Expensive elite archers not great. A company of galadrhim archers are 60 points and have 10 shots. Orcs with bows are 20 points a company with eight. So for the same points I can take three company and get more shots. Fun fact, the Orc mob rule (also goblin) also applys when shooting, as the rule simply states when supporting. Some archers are worth spending more because of abilitys, harradrim for example.

    • Every unit needs a hero, no exceptions. As my rohan opponent found out, lacking a hero means you lose at the double, and more importantly, you can't resist a spell. Only one of his units actually moved all game, transfix and to a lesser extent pall of night locked him down.

•Speaking of heroes the ringwraiths are all amazing. Never take a shaman, just stump up the extra points for thief abilitys. Khamul and the betrayer are particually amazing. On the good side legolas is a monster slayer. Crippling shot then epic shot kills balrogs.

    • Balance is key, there's such a clear rock/paper/scissors mechanic that you can't field a warhammer style super unit and expect to win.

    You're damn right.

Oh and I agree 100% on the Wringwraiths. I'm going to be using The Dark Marshall and The Betrayer. I'm also going to be bringing in Druhzag, because he costs the same as a normal Shaman, has an extra mastery level, 3 might, can summon animals, and has access to both Ruin and Wilderness (Ruin is AMAZING).

    So, yeah.

For extra fun with ruin use saruman, use his free point of might to use epic ruination. Commence the rape. Exicate at st3 is way more effective.

As for ringwraiths Khamul is brilliant. A 5+ ward is good but pinging the hits back is great. In my 2k list he's going in a nine company strong mordor Orc unit. Not only does he help keep the def 5 orcs alive longer but by the time the unit gets wiped out it's going to inflict a lot of kills. I also love the witch king. Yes he's more points but the better statline is useful and his ability is just fantastic. Mordor is the swarm list, and having the ability to always at the double without worrying about low courage orcs fluffing it. In the tourny he meant my morannons chould support the warg riders. Mounting him on a fel beast was a great move too. Being as fast ad he was meant he could make the most of his low range spells. Black dart is fantastic for dropping pest epics. He also fills out the monster part of my list nicely. Gothmog was also excellent killing aragorn, imrahil and thier swan knight we escort

When flanking they hit as hard as dol amroth and are half the price! I tried using them in small units like normal cav but they crumbled, so I maxed out the unit and there unstoppable, there's way too many to kill. Gothmog can use epic defense, so you can make them def 7 I'm combat, so once they get there they ain't gona lose.

I noticed that when looking through the rules. Easterling archers are awfully expensive for just being regular archers with a fight value of 4. I'm going to make sure all my archers are haradrim. Orcs are cheaper, but don't have poison, have a worse shooting score, and I'm not sure my proud Easterlings would fight alongside orcish scum.

I'm thinking about 1/3 archers, 1/3 infantry, 1/3 heavy cav as my army formation. I have ringwraith models, but not sure if I should go with one or not. My favourite one I reposed in the exact stance of Archaon. Horse on its hind feat, and the rider pointing his sword out, pretty badass.

Great going, Pitt, you killed the thread.

Anyhow, I found a Hobbytown a more reasonable distance to me than the nearest GW shop (30 miles), only a 30 minute drive. :x So I has paints and when my finals are done next week, I shall begin painting.

For a starter army, I'm thinking something like this:

Easterling formation of 4 companies with swords
Easterling formation of 4 companies with pikes
Haradrim archer formation of 4 companies with bows
    Kataphrakt formation of 4 companies

Given a captain in each formation, thats about 750 points, giving me some room for another formation or so of my choice. Obviously, since I'm just at the point of modelling, I'm not sure how to balance points between characters and troops.
