How about little dude just ends up sucking and he goes home? Or maybe Mr. CTS just disappears one day and the kid becomes a hermit? What would the perfect anti-cliche be here?

You are forgetting that people like to read shit that is interesting and cool.

Hermits are usually only cool when they have a long and mysterious past to hide from.
There was also a short story in one of those old Scary Stories books about a hermit who lived at the foot of a mountain, and he supposedly never left, so some kids all get together and run him off so they can explore, only to find out he's been keeping some spooky monster at bay all those years.

Yeah, the ending of the story is him running back towards his hut trying to warn them and being like "NOOOO NOT AGAIN" Which is sort of sad on his part :(

Good god, when will mysterious wandering Samurai ever learn that taking on apprentices is a bad idea? He'll only inevitably betray you! Trust no one

What? No, man, that's only one possibility. My counter-cliche is where the student gains skill over the years and eventually saves or avenges his master. Or marries his daughter after helping him to finish off his decades-long battle with his arch-enemy, like in Banderas' first Zorro movie.

I like the whole Jin thing from samurai champloo

everyone thinks he betrays his master, but it turns out his master was ordered to kill jin in his sleep and jin winds up killing him

That was such an awesome scene.

Nah, its the first student. First students always become over confident and tragically die.

Then years later when the master has lived in solitude and guilt he'll take a 'trouble child' and mold him into the level headed warrior.

Yeah, see, this is what I mean. There are so many possible cliches, don't limit yourself to just one!

The kid is the Cardboard Tube Samurai. That's the twist I'm expecting.

Except in that one series where Batman is really old. And also except for when Batman is a kid, though he's technically not calling himself "Batman" yet.

According to an interview I read the other day, Tycho and Gabe would ideally like to do it sort of like a TV season, so a quarterly thing or whatever. Apparently Scott Kurtz is moving to Washington, so all they have to do is get Wil and they can record whenever. I'll look for the interview tomorrow, it was pretty neat.
