In all reality, I'd see a safety pin before a paper clip, but I see what you were trying to do.

Well I went ahead and did some sketches of the same logo anyway. Some of them are still phallic, I know. I need to show my process.

Keep the round bowl for the 'd' or go with this straight edge? Longer or squatter? Straight or rotated and cropped? Opinions?

These questions still apply. I'm also wondering if I should have the stroke of the 'f' extend through the vertical line or cut it off.

(Sorry 'bout crappy images blah blah blah don't have a scanner blah).

EDIT: You know, I don't see any reason to change the original, at least in dimensions. It's the right size, and it doesn't look too phallic. Might play around with line width etc though.

Hahaha. I like your comment on #6. :P

Personally, I like #15 the best out of those sketches. Avoids looking phallic, and the thick lines look really good to me.

Three votes for #15, then (not soley from these forums).

    EDIT:

Redoing one of the earlier designs (obviously not finished, but it'll serve as the basis).

One more time, this time with outlines. I've made the outer-outlines thicker than the inner ones this time, but there's really little difference from the one before. Yet again, obviously not finished.

The D is way too big for the F to matter.

Also, I agree with nation about no.15

    Easy to fix.

Did a quick version of #15. Probably not thick enough, but that's also easy to fix. Which one's the best?

Okay, now we're getting somewhere. Here's a trace (modified) of that sketch I did earlier.

EDIT: Updated with a slightly improved version.

    logotype28square.jpg

    Comments?

    Want sleep. But must logo.

    EDIT:

Slightly thicker version of this one.

    logotype29square.jpg

    DOUBLE EDIT:

    Thicker!

    logotype30square.jpg

    MULTI EDIT:

    You know what? Fuck logos.

Hopefully I can get some more crits on this one by the time I wake up.

1.The lettering is swishy and nice, but the overall shape lacks coherence

    2. Of the second two, I like this one so far but:

    3. If you shave the outer curve on the F so that the curves where the f and d meet are the same, this will be my favorite

Believe it or not, they are the same (unless I've misunderstood you). That's perception for you. I'll dick around with it and see if I can improve it.

The calligraphic logo doesn’t work at all. You’re forcing a ligature out of two letters in a way that they wouldn’t come together naturally and it creating a chasm in between. The too-small bowl of d isn’t helping with that. You’ve also drawn the crossbar on the f incorrectly, it fails to follow the pen angle of the letters. Start over by drawing the two swashy letters individually, then draw them together, then connect them once you have developed swashes that look good and come close to connecting sensibly.

Of the compass-lettering logo, the lighter option is better as the heavy one has a far less interesting and somewhat unpleasant counter form.

The shadow logo won’t reduce well. And the D is too narrow to go sticking something inside of. Find something wider and chunkier so you can make the F work.

I agree with you; I've been trying to design these based on the consensus of what other people like, not myself, since that is the whole point of designing a logo. Too thin, though, and it starts to look phallic again. Personally, this one is my favourite.

*sigh* Okay, did some versions of this again. Adjusted the circles so they appear to be in line with the vertical strokes, even though they aren't. Still not perfect though, need criticism.

I figured trying to get the letters to look like caligraphy with a pencil or the pen tool would be a waste of time, so I used an existing typeface (zapfino) and modified it. Not right yet (the join between the 'f' and 'd' looks weird), but is it better?

    logotype371square.jpg

EDIT: Looking at that image ^ again... It's terrible. Time to start again.

ARG! I fucking hate it when a solution is staring you in the face, but it takes you forever to find it. But at least I think I've found a way to improve the shadow logo.

    logotype38square.jpg

Not finished, but the extended stroke for the 'F' helps a lot IMO.

EDIT: No comments? I could really use some criticism.

    Bleh... :|

    logotype39square.jpg

Curves don't match up, and the stress is in the wrong places. I'll have to do it again, but I think I've got it figured now.

I'm determined to have these finished before I go to sleep, but I'll need criticism. Anyone? Please?

EDIT: Now with a little less butt-ugly.

I'm really digging that last one. Might need a little clean up. Have you tried keeping the top part of the F not curved. Or does it look too generic that way?

Experimenting by making the 'F' a bit smaller. Final version won't have the border.

    logotype43square.jpglogotype44square.jpg

Oh, also, this just isn't going to work.

    logotype45squarei.jpg

EDIT: Oh, wait, NibCrom, did you mean this logo? And by the way, what part needs a clean up?

DOUBLE EDIT: Okay, chances are one of these is going to be the final for the shadow logo:

    logotype46square.jpg

    logotype47square.jpg

    logotype48square.jpg

    logotype49square.jpg

    logotype50square.jpg

    Opinions?

MULTI EDIT: Okay, I think I've chosen two of my finals...

    logotype49square.jpg

    logotype27square.jpg

Now all I have to do is fix up the caligraphy one. Which is good, because these are due tomorrow. I still have to make some mockup business cards and letterheads out of them though.

Nah, it's my bad. I don't think there's a typography term for it anyway, and if there is I wouldn't know it. :P

EDIT: I looked it up. The closest typography term would be 'arm', but that refers to both the horizontal strokes coming off the vertical stem, not specifically to the inner part of the upper arm. Uh, yeah.

Okay, I think I've got my three finals. Now I need to select one to use as my final. Polls are open people, I want to hear some votes.

    #1
    logotype49square.jpg

    #2

    #3

Unfortunately we're not allowed to include any extra graphical elements. Only logo and text. And only black and white. :|

You need to add a straight section where the upper curve in #2 rolls down into the scalpel shape, when done as one curve it bulges outward.

Generally, the white ones are stronger imo. They might not stand out to a potential client, though. But I feel like that whole simple, sans-serif, whitespace aesthetic is in right now. Which is why the 2nd in the right column is probably my favorite.
