Thanatos I have a problem with Democrats in real life.
they are way cooler in The West Wing
My favorite part about The West Wing was how they only portrayed Republicans sympathetically when they were essentially RINOs.
To be fair, real Republicans are terrible people
Elendil gets it. :P
No, seriously, I refer to The West Wing as "Progressiporn." It's pretty much entirely escapism for left-wing political junkies, so they wouldn't blow their brains out during the Bush years.
So what you're saying is, liberals live in a fantasy world?
No, I'm saying liberals occasionally needed to escape from the real world back when conservatives were running it into the ground.

People always seem to hate their partners after a breakup. Unless infidelity was involved, this seems absurd.
what are you basing this on exactly?
I'd say it varies wildly from person to person and relationship to relationship
As a general rule, most people go through at least a hating phase following a relationship. It's just part of how you learn to cope with the newly-ex relationship.

I hate... 4/5 of my exes.
Well, 4/6 if you consider that I'm now engaged to one.
The clean coal commercials with Obama talking kinda make me feel a bit awkward.
It's something we need to do. Genuine "clean coal" isn't ever going to happen, but we need to have cleaner coal. If not for us, then for China.
Yeah, regardless of its future viability we're using it for what, like 50% of our electricity production?
Not to mention the entire state of West Virginia would implode if we stopped needing coal.
Would anyone notice?
I don't know very much about clean coal, it just feels like it's the wrong direction. In reality though, I guess the right direction is "every direction" i.e. using a wide variety of sources of energy.

Well just on my social circle, of course I can't speak for the people I haven't met. Many of the breakups that occur in my family, amongst my friends, coworkers, etc.- seems to conclude with a lot of "bloobity blah blah that fucker didn't deserve me", etc.

We shouldn't be building more coal power plants. We shouldn't be expanding our coal base at all. That being said, the fact that China is using so fucking much coal is a huge concern, and if we can help them to make it cleaner than it is, it's going to be for the best for everyone.

Definitely.
In the US though, clean coal might be just a smokescreen/diversion.
They're ruining Marshal in the new season. Christ.
Spoilers will be dealt with in a most harsh manner.
No spoilers. They're just ruining the character.
You know how he sometimes goes on philisophical rants to explain life's anomalies? Yeah?
Apparently the writers realized that most people watching don't actually understand anything he's saying and, consequently, he doesn't actually have to say anything. This makes me sad.

it feels like lately it's just a name that terrible people band together under
Yeah, but I would prefer just not using coal in general. Of course it will probably be a long time before that happens.
So yeah, it's gonna be awhile.

Cognitive dissonance? You reject the thing that you don't have anymore in order to justify giving it up/losing it?
I'm pretty sure it's a coping mechanism for some people.

Yeah this is pretty much what happened.
If it were anything it would be Freudian Rationalization, although I don't personally think so.
