Competitions for the brain

Heya, I'm interested in getting involved in competitive activities that involve the brain rather than athletics, but I'm having a hard time finding some. Two given topics are of course chess and math, but I'd love to get any tips on other examples of brain competitions.

    Local trivia contests?

Personally, I keep my mind active by doing a ton of crossword puzzles.

Puzzles of all sorts seem like a good idea. http://wpc.puzzles.com/

I've never done the US puzzle championship, but would like to. If you are still in college, there are plenty of math competitions, and probably some quiz bowl like stuff.

Are you in high school? Mine had a scholastic bowl team that was pretty fun. It was pretty much team trivia/math.

If you're over the legal drinking age you could look for pub quiz nights.

When I was in high school I was on the math team, which is exactly as dorky as it sounds. It was really fun though, and surprisingly competitive.

If you happen to be in Washington DC in a couple weeks you could do this.

I recommend this. Our trivia team regularly wins at a local bar and it's always a blast.

Expect to shell out a few bucks every night for beer, though.

Edit: also I did the regional Science Bowl in high school and that was pretty fun. There was a NHS Trivia bowl at our school too, I watched it every week but never got in a team because I was lazy. More good times.
