Arabic, as with all non-English languages, has layers of meaning that just can't be conveyed in English, especially with something as poetic and complex as the Koran. This is even what the girls in my classes at the mosque have been mentioning.

The alphabet means nothing- plenty of entirely dissimilar languages employ the same alphabet. Most Jews are somewhat comfortable with Yiddish if only because of its symbiosis with classical Hebrew, which the majority of Jews are exposed to upon their study of the Torah as children. Modern Hebrew- spoken in Israel- is a whole separate monster, though. They're in different language families. I am completely fluent in Hebrew but barely conversational in Yiddish.
