The ships are going to start off on their respective map edges. The frigates will most likely engage first anyways since they're fastest. I believe you can get the AI to use your own formation preferences by assigning some value in the Ship Maker. Jothki, why not sign up to make it an even 8?

It's not exploiting a bug, it's understanding the mechanics behind the game. Core to core distances are used because trying to calculate the actual edge to edge distance would be far more intensive and complicated for the AI. I increased my AI range to accomodate your ship size, as its core to core distance... unless my ship is right near the 'entrance', it wouldn't start firing..
