Release: January 5th 2010Welcome to my Fantasy Zone!
What is Bayonetta?
Bayonetta is an action game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, directed by Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe creator Hideki Kamiya at Platinum Games in cooperation with publisher Sega.
Yes, that's right, the man who made Devil May Cry decided it was time to get back into the action game genre and show all the rookies how it's done. And as you'll soon discover he did it with a bang.
Hello everyone. It's been a long time, hasn't it?
I can finally let you all in on the details of my latest project, BAYONETTA. BAYONETTA is a world-class 3D action game for the world at large, the summation of all of our technology and know-how here at PlatinumGames
Speaking of 3D action games, I can?t help but remember a time nearly seven years ago, and my first completely original game, Devil May Cry. My own immaturity towards game design filled it with straight-forward, pure ideas. It has become my defining work, a game that drew the roadmap for all 3D action games that followed.
Now, seven years later, I?ve decided to return to 3D action. I?m sure some of you are asking... Why is he making another 3D action game?
After DMC, I went on to develop Viewtiful Joe. In pursuing a new way of creating an action game within the limitations of 2D stages, it was a game that was ahead of its time. It was a game that spawned a love-hate response amongst users; however, as a game developed by a small team, its flaws can be forgiven as a bold experiment that achieved its initial goals.
Okami was a change of gears. My attempt to make a ?Nature Adventure? game based upon the theme of healing, it also represented an effort to broaden my own personal abilities. Even though it is labeled an adventure, we succeeded in making a grand journey that represented a progression for us in every way, from its text-heavy story to our trademark brand of action controls.
With these two completely different games, I sought out the new, making them as groundbreaking as possible; however, I never forgot my love of action games. In fact, my love grew stronger. So once development of Okami was completed, it marked a turning point, and a return to the Devil of seven years past ? a return to my starting point of 3D action. Once again, the fires of creation were lit inside me.
How have 3D action games evolved since we blazed a new trail with DMC? Can you even go so far as to say they?ve evolved?
Seven years ago, we put everything we had into Devil May Cry. But since then, like the hands of time for the 3D action genre were frozen at that moment, it seems like the drive to push users further has stopped. There is so much more that should be done now. And we are the only ones who seem up to the task. This is the spark that has lit the fire within me.
?Pushing 3D Action to a New Dimension?
With that goal in mind, we are going to set the clock on 3D action back into motion. Where we once gave birth to true 3D action, we return to unleash a new truth on the world. A truth only we can create.
We will prove this with BAYONETTA.
Believe us. It will be worth the wait.
Wow, this sounds amazing, so what can I play this on?
The game is available for PlayStation 3 and XBox360.
Both versions of the game have the exact same content, however there are technical differences.
Platinum Games developed Bayonetta in-house on the 360, then handed off the assets to Sega for conversion to the PS3. Neither version is flawless - framerate drops and screen tearing are issues on both consoles - but the PS3 version suffers in terms of load times, lower quality textures and with an overall lower framerate.
However, after the Japanese release in October '09, a team from Sony was brought in to help Sega polish up the PS3 version prior to its North American release - this resulted in some subtle, but marked improvements between the Japanese and NA PS3 versions and brought the PS3 more in line with the 360 version in regards to framerate and overall smoothness.
Check out this comparison video to get a detailed look at the differences:
Gametrailers.com Console ComparisonBut I heard this game is REALLY Japanese, is that true?
Yes, that's true. Bayonetta is colourful ,crazy, completely off the wall and over the top insane.
The game doesn't take anything serious, especially not itself and every single digital pore is filled with that wacky Japanese style that we all love/hate so much.
Cutscenes are abundant and filled to the brim with completely insane but wonderful to look at stunts, the corniest one-liners you have ever heard, Characters you will come to adore and the story may just be too much to comprehend for people who can't switch their brain into "anime mode".
If you ever played (or rather watched) Metal Gear Solid 4 you are familiar with this kind of presentation. Cutscenes can go on a bit too long and the narrative likes to get lost between all the explosions and crotch shots.
But, if you liked Devil May Cry 3's cutscene craziness, you will enjoy Bayonetta's even more over the top escapades. If you are not a fan of bright colours, weirdly sexist feminism, long cutscenes and the highest amount of digitally rendered hair in a videogame ever, then this is probably not for you.
Oh,and be sure to keep that controller in hand, will you? You never know when that deadly QTE might pop up and destroy the unattentive player's rating!
So if I like DMC's gameplay, can I just skip every cutscene and enjoy this?
A big YES to that!
You can skip any cutscene, long or short, by pressing RT+BACK on the 360 or R2+SELECT on the PS3!
Bayonetta features the smoothest, most perfect fighting system in a DMC style action game to date!
Just like Bayonetta's curves, fights are an up and down of offense and defense and the game can be played by both button mashing newbies and hyper elitist, jump canceling fighting gods.
But how could mere words portrait the sheer beauty of Bayonetta in a fight to the death?
Here are some moving pictures!

Want to try this yourself? Play the demo on PSN/XBL!
Don't forget, pressing SELECT (PS3) or BACK (360) during a loading screen will start TRAINING MODE!
Try your best to make Bayonetta break a sweat!
Ok,I get it, so I beat this once and then I've seen everything, right?
You couldn't be further from the truth! Bayonetta is filled to the brim with unlockables, costumes, new weapons, new characters, higher difficulties, collectables, achievements, extra playmodes etc...
You will not find everything in your first playthrough and to really get the entire 100% this game has to offer, you will have to invest a really big chunk of your time into it, if you so choose.
To put this into numbers:
- A usual first playthrough on Normal difficulty done by an average gamer should take about 10-12 hours.
- Unlocking half of what the game has to offer nets you at least another 12 hours.
- Really 100% the game will probably be another 20 hours or so, if not more!
So don't worry about replayability, cause Bayonetta is one hot girl you do not want to run out on!
Ok but I need this one little extra kick to go out and buy the game now.

Win.
So has anyone attempted to use the Shuraba lock-on laser after a successful counterattack?
I'm thinking that it wouldn't work unless you can somehow cancel the counterattack (since it uses up some of the Witch Time, right?)...
I approve of the title.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Official Strategy Guide Trailer
MC Lars on Bayonetta
It has so many hints. Each time I try to recreate it on an Ardor and then rewatch it I realise a little bit more of why he's doing what he's doing but it's still such a high level of play that I can't get anywhere near that length.
Eventually I hope that all this will be instinct and I can keep an ardor in the sky for it's whole length.
I once had a really good run with an ardor, he was close to dying and I'd kept him on the roof for quite a while and then...he fell out of the world through a hole in the ground. It was one of those weave made holes in broken sky.
My face was like this ->
Mind you it was my fault I saw I was over the hole and tried to do that fancy thing in the trailer combo where you dodge offset and keep going to get over to the other side of the hole. It didn't work and the ardor dropped straight down.
The claw circle punch move is fantastic for combos. It stuns and cancels your current combo. That's why he is using it so much.
Another thing I learnt partly from that vid + trying it out myself.
Coran Attack!
PKP with shuruba like he said.
But in addition, you will probably need to learn to dodge offset the kick backwards because it's got long reach and will often hit them, breaking your combo so the weave wont come out. If you haven't learnt it by now, no better time to start!

Make sure to read the description for some more information.
Essentially, because the boss doesn't back away or die until the quick time event, you can hit it with the kilgore glitch over and over, for the entire duration.
The description says that you need to use the Bracelet Of Time to activate Witch Time, but given that you probably won't have the Bracelet Of Time available, you might be able to make do with the accessory which activates Witch Time whenever you're hit (Selene's Light).
I'm not sure on that, though, since I haven't tried farming halos this way.
Even if you DO need Bracelet of Time, and can't use Selene's Light, you can buy it for 3 million halos, which you can get in a few runs with the Chapter VII method, and then you'll be all set for the Chapter II method.
This gets you the aforementioned 10 million halos, if you do it right, although more... presence is required of you. You can't just mash Y/Triangle for this technique.

The rest is fluff.

"...only mights and maybes."
Then I got to the second (?) boss. The dragon head that smashes through the Cathedral. I swear I almost thrown my controller at the tv. I cannot stay alive. I'm tempted to say it's bad design choice to throw a boss like that in this game, but whatever. I just want to know how to beat him. I get you need to use witch time to avoid his fireball, and I can do that, but it's when he's thrashing to the sides and lunging forward that he get's me.
As for the swipe. Just back away from him and dodge approriately.
Really, there is no attack in this game you can't dodge. Some moves just have stricter timing than others.
You.....you are having trouble with the dragon head? In the cathedral?
I'm sorry to say this man but....that's not even a boss fight. Like, not a real one, it's more like a little appetizer or something.
Just stay to the left and dodge his fireballs/bites he telegraphs them in a pretty obvious way. For example, when he roars, he's gonna shoot fireballs and when he closes his mouth once,he's gonna snap at you.
I cheesed that boss the first time around by staying up on the path, and not going down to the area with your two buddies who get killed. Just stay up on the steps, where you come in, and shoot him with X/Square for a while, and dodge his fireballs. Much easier.
The install patch for the PS3 version is now live in North America. It's about 140mb, and installs around 4.5gb to the HDD (if you choose to install the data). Early reports say it totally eliminates load when picking up items and reduces screen tearing (I never found screen tearing to be an issue, myself), but I'll be most interested to see how it handles Gates of Hell/restart/level start loads.
I'll post back in a few with noticeable effects.
He is past that. Way past that. What you are talking about is in chapter 1.
He is talking about the "boss" at the end of chapter 2 in the cathedral.
The X360 version has better graphics, a smoother framerate and better loading times out of the box.
The PS3 just got a patch today that lets you install the game and thereby reduce the loading times.
Even with the patch,if you own a 360,that's the version to get. If you really just want to play the game and not wait for your 360 to be repaired, just get it for PS3.
Sigh, that's what I figured.
I know this isn't the correct thread, but does the same hold for Darksiders? I was looking at getting either this or Darksiders next week.
Call it OCD I guess but if there's a definitively "best" version, and I actually have the console it's on (even if that console is...uh...broken) I find it hard to justify getting the less-good version, even if it's a negligible margin of quality.
It's a nasty behavioral quirk of mine.
Darksiders is superior on the PS3. There's significant screen tearing on the 360 version - word is a patch is incoming (or it may be out already), but it sounds like for Darksiders the PS3 was the lead platform.
Darksiders = PS3.
Bayonetta = 360.
Though if you only have a 360 or only a PS3, you'll still be happy with the games.
EVERY. SINGLE. PART.
Also BLUR FILTER OF DEATH.
Thanks, that's what I like to hear.
So next week I'll get Darksiders for the PS3 and ship my X360 out for repair. I might actually just buy an arcade console instead. MS is slow with their repair turnarounds last I checked. Like a one-month turnaround? Ugh.
Anyway, when I get it back I can finally finish Assassin's Creed II (yes, it broke when I got 40% through ACII - so frustrating!) and I'll pick up Bayonetta after that.
In Germany it takes about 5-7 days to get your 360 back
Maybe it's changed. Last time it took a silly goosey month.
