Cynamite.de, german gaming page got their euro PS3 and tested how good the EUR PS3's backwards compatibility is in reality. Well, not surprisingly, it wasn't very good at all. From twelve tested high profile games, only Eragon worked. Rest asked to wait for patch. Here is list complete list of tested games:
- God of War
- MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
- MGS 3: Snake Eater
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Guitar Hero 2
- Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
- Okami
- GTA: Liberty City Stories
- Eragon
- Final Fantasy X-2
- Ratchet & Clank 3
- Lumines Plus
I'm not exactly up on my German, but did that site say that only Eragon worked?

However so far still no update for a PAL-PS3 is available, which runs on delivery with the system software 1,50. God bless the horrible translation of google.
Wow. Those are some nice games that apparently don't work, if this is true. Some Sony-made ones too.
Then again, we really shouldn't have gotten our hopes up. Even with the "target" of 1,000 games compatable, wikipedia says there's 8,500 PS2 games out there. That's a pretty low percentage.

The PS2 was the most popular console of last generation. That means it got the most crap. Most people aren't going to be upset that Big Mutha Truckers and White Van Racer aren't PS3 compatible.

But the problem is that generic bulk crap is far easier to emulate than highly optimized AAA title. That's why Xbox 360 compatibility list has so many bad games on it.

i mean, i bet its probably going to be the exact same system as the 360.
a bunch of crappy games and a few good ones, too many fans of the other games crying that "such and such isnt BC"
as it is, this german website tested exactly .141176% of the games if that 8500 number is to be believed.

Except for the one that worked. With the entire PS2 library at their disposal, people shouldn't care about the Eragon game. Especially since the movie sucked as bad as it did.

Yes, but it's an important .1%. I would rather have MGS2/3, SotC, Ico, and Okami run and nothing else work than have everything but those five games run, and I think most here feel the same way (albeit with a different "short list" of important titles).

okay i mean, as of last in march, 103 MILLION ps2 consoles have been sold even if say 1/2 that was people re-buying one, 50 million people then, do we have sales numbers on these games?
what are they at most... 5-10 million?
Edit: i mean, okami's sales numbers were poor werent they? lower than expected at least.
but i mean, with europes love of MGS3 online, no way thats not going to get updated day one.
I'm going to go all Hitchhikers guide here "DONT PANIC!" there will be a day one update.

GTA, MGS2, MGS3, and God of War sold are the best selling games on the PS2.

right, and get me concrete sales numbers on those.
i'd probably guess less than 1/10th the total number of ps2's sold worldwide to date.

Additionally, if MGS4 is going to be the MEGATON title people are stancing it as, then Sony had better be freaking working on getting MGS2 and 3 up and running. Like how Microsoft railroaded Halo and Halo 2 to be BC-ready.
And you had better believe they should have the GTA titles ready even before those.
I'm still willing to give Sony a pass on NERD RAGE!!! until launch day, but after that all gloves are off.
Didn't I read in this months Edge that Sony have said they are going to drop backwards compatibility for the PS3 so that they can focus on providing the blu-ray DVD hardware and other next-gen stuff?
Didn't I read in this months Edge that Sony have said they are going to drop backwards compatibility for the PS3 so that they can focus on providing the blu-ray DVD hardware and other next-gen stuff?
ie - none of those games should have worked.
Read it again. The European models are dropping the hardware chip that handles the BC in favor of a software-based solution.

No. They are dropping the hardware that makes emulating the PS2 easy.
right, and get me concrete sales numbers on those.
i'd probably guess less than 1/10th the total number of ps2's sold worldwide to date.
And your point would be what, exactly?
If some of the top-selling games don't work, there's plenty of people who are going to be pissed. And the very, very low rate of success in the test suggests that there are a lot of other games that don't work either. Sure, it could be that the magazine blundered into 11 games that don't work even though most of them do, but statistically, that's very, VERY unlikely.
Edit: Szechuanosaurus, Sony is dropping hardware-based BC to focus on making money.
for lazy people, the top 10 best-selling PS2 games (in order) are:
Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto 3
Gran Turismo 4
Final Fantasy X
Need for Speed: Underground
Medal Of Honour Frontline
Need for Speed: Underground 2
Metal Gear Solid 2
edit: The list is probably slightly out of date, since GTASA got a Japan release since the list was last updated and might be in the top spot now.

I'm just saying that as much as we care about those games, we are an extremely tiny slice of the pie here. yes they are popular games, yes in all likely hood there will be a day one patch addressing at least MGS3 and God of War, probably more off that list, but in the grand scheme of things, thats 12 games out of the entire lineup, which is to say the least... massive.
Zephos's bullet points before he goes to work:
There will most likley be a day 1 patch to adress some of these titles
12 games out of the entire lilbrary is a small number, i'm sure more than eragon will work
don't panic, sony seems to be on a good streak, have faith.
Edit: this edit is likley to make me late for work, but the Warlock i love you.
see, look at the list, 14 million for top seller, 1/10th of what the ps2's total worldwide sales equal.
If Europeans actually buy this system, I will lose all respect for them and hit them. My fist will be awfully sore after hitting nearly a billion people, but it will be worth it.
Seriously, though, no Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3? No God of War? With so few games designed specifically for the PS3 right now, who in their right minds would even consider buying one when the backward compatibility is so badly gimped? If ever there was a reason for a European backlash against Sony products, this would be it.

Somebody who wants a Blu-Ray player? Somebody who doesn't care about back compatibility? Somebody who wants to play Resistance and Gran Turismo HD who happens to have $500/$600 to burn?
Lots of people wants PS3s for lots of different reasons.

First off, those top selling games aren't all bought by the same person; they're spread out among different people. Upwards of 40 million people could own one of the affected games. Math math lol.
Second, we are looking at a small slice of the pie, but the fact that so many good games don't work doesn't make it seem MORE likely that the games you own and care about will work. Statistically speaking, it makes it less likely.
Third, don't have unwavering faith in the invisible hand. The invisible hand hasn't fixed the 1080i problem, now did it?
Fourth, one blessedly good conference does not a streak make, and it doesn't magically innoculate Sony from any future screw-ups.
Honestly, we don't know the extent of BC on PS3 at this point, but this list (if true) is a pretty big bad sign.
It's a shame that the Germans didn't test Pro Evo Soccer as well, as football games in England are what Madden is in America. I don't want to generalise, but I imagine that it's the Pro Evo and GTA crowd who will be buying the PS3 on the basis of the Playstation label without checking anything as detailed as backwards compatibility.
Yup. Rockstar ported it to PS2. Same goes for Vice City Stories.
Yeah, that and Lumines are what's really worrisome. SotC and MGS3 not working day one is unfortunate, but it's a natural consequence of using software emulation that the more complicated titles don't work. If they can't get PSP ports to work yet, though, that's a much bigger indicator that their emulator's not up to snuff.
The PS2 was the most popular console of last generation. That means it got the most crap. Most people aren't going to be upset that Big Mutha Truckers and White Van Racer aren't PS3 compatible.

The truth right there. And thats what scares me. Crappy-movie-about-cgi-animals-generic-3D-platform-games will be made from all the base code libaries and so emulated very easily - all the good games pushed the machine with nonstandard use of libraries etc.
So overall we will see a lot of fluff work, but the meat not.
And too me at least it's a huge deal. I love Backwards Compatibilty. For me a game doesn't stop existing just because it's old - and yet my TV only has three inputs. So having two boxes under the tv is a big deal (before you say it - switchers lower the quality of the signal IMHO).
At the end of this generation, when the 360 announced it would have shitty BC I decided to buy a cheap xbox and wait till I could get a PS3 and have that be my PS2 player. Now the PS3 is having such a slow start, and it's BC is fucked too - I need to buy a PS2 FIRST.
I see no reason in buying a PS3 till I've played through the fun on the PS2. So they've lost a customer for 2 or 3 years.
Who cares about Europe's BC? Apparently, they enjoy being screwed by video game companies.
Let's talk about what's important: North American BC.
The PS3s on the shelf right now have a 98%-99% BC ability, but what about the ones that start shipping in April without the EE chip?
If this is any indication, the PS3s from April on will be permanently gimped. I also remember an interview with one of the Sony higher-ups saying BC compatibility was not a priority, and Sony would be focusing on PS3 games and Blu-ray junk, not BC.
I'm not seeing how this is helping in getting slow-selling systems into people's homes.

i know for one guitar hero2 still doesnt work on US ps3's to my knowledge.
By my understanding, it works, but official PS2 controller adapter doesn't recognise it because it doesn't have an analog stick.
