DANGER OF SPOILERS AHEAD

Hey, you. Yes, you. Don't bitch about Competitive vs. Casual bullshit. We've been warned more than once. Rational conversation about it is fine, but do NOT flame, troll, or be a dick about it. There is no one way to have fun.

    RULES:
This tournament will be a more or less friendly Round Robin set-up. All stages will be on, and every item set to Medium frequency. Before March 23rd, you need to PM me with two characters. These are the only two characters that you'll be allowed to use for the duration of the tournament, in both Singles and Doubles play.

When a round begins, you'll have 24 hours to get into contact with your opponent and have your match. You'll need to take care of friend codes. You'll also both need to PM your opponent with a preferred stage. Matches are 3-stock, 7 minutes, best 2 out of 3. The first stage is chosen at random. The second stage will be the preferred stage of the loser, which both players must select. The third match will once again be on the preferred stage of the loser. If your match goes on for less than three minutes, than by all means record it.

Also, please remember that this tournament has been made with casual play in mind. There are no hard rules in place to defend against unfair or obnoxious tactics, but using them counteracts the purpose of this tournament. You might win your match, but you'll make everyone hate you quite a bit, and odds are you'll have a much harder time finding someone here to play with in the future.

    Who:

The first 80 people to sign up, AFTER the sign up has initiated.

There are no character restrictions. You may select any character you want prior to any fight of any round. You are not obligated to stick with any character.

    What:

A 4man FFA style tournament with 3 Rounds and elimination.
We'll be using a scoring system of KOs minus suicides. The 2 people with the lowest score from each round is eliminated.
    4-stock
    No Time Limit
    All items will be on.
All stages will be available, however randomly predetermined prior to the match itself.

    When:

    Sign-ups start Feb 23rd at 7pm-ish (MST)

The tournament itself will partake as follows:

    Round 1: April 1st - 5th
    Round 2: April 6th - 10th
    Round 3: April 11th - 15th

You'll be given a list of your opponents, and its up to you to determine a day/time that works best for all of you, along with exchanging of Friend Codes.

    Where:

Updates of the standings will be posted here, along with the PA Smash thread.

    Why:
For fun of course. There is no prize here. This is meant to simply be a social activity, and a way to get to know your fellow smashers.

On a final note. This is my tournament. If you have a problem with any part of it, you are more than welcome to make your own tournament. I have my reasons for my rule-set, which you are more than welcome to inquire about. If you do see some sort of easily exploitable rule, please let me know, so I can attempt to make this tournament as fun as possible.

    How:
There will be no restriction of tactics or tricks. As this is a social event, the idea is to find someone with your playstyle and preferences. As this is a 4man FFA most 1v1 "tricks" probably wont work anyway.

Upon finishing a match, I'll be trusting the players to provide me with the correct scoring. We're all adults here, and I feel should be trusted as such. Besides, if anyone finds out your cheating, you'll probably never play another tourney here anyway. :P

    Example.
    April 1st:
Joe vs Bob vs Dan vs Tim
    on
    Halberd

    Outcome:
    Joe 3 (4 - 1 suicide)
    Bob 3
    Dan 6
    Tim 2

Tim drops, while Joe and Bob sudden death over who gets to continue along with Dan.

Argue all you like, but how is turtling lame? There are two people playing the game, and one of the two has to attack the other. The rule states that the person who is ahead must always attack or else they face the banhammer.
No, it specifically does not state that you ass.

There is a difference between retreating and stalling forever.

and I explained it if you would care to read what I actually post.
What I explained is what turtling is. Turtling is getting into a defensive position and waiting for your opponent to attack. I.E. getting on the leftmost platform of Jungle Japes and waiting.

Crazy casual tournaments and their rules! At least with a normal tournament I know what to expect. What will the final ruleset be? I can't stand the suspense!

It's just ridiculous to be regulating behavior in a tournament based on what's "boring." If your opponent is using a dumb strat like turtling and you're bored, just suck it up and beat them. If they're turtling and beating you, learn to play. You can get annoyed at people all you want for being obnoxious in casual games, but in a tournament people should be permitted to play seriously however they like barring extremely unfair tactics(of which I'd say there are none so far). Trust me, you don't want to put yourself in a position where you have to punish somebody for being "lame."

Blankspace, you seem to under the assumption that turtling and running away equal "stalling forever".

Unless the opponent completely sucks at the game, this is definitely not the case.

Really, you're banning things that odds are won't be a big deal at all; forcing you to have to watch every round to make sure is going to be more trouble than its worth. :|
Because it's not all that easy. It's pretty worthless against people with projectile moves or moves with wide range, and everyone else can still mindgame their way around Kirby. Even if you get eaten breaking out isn't that hard.

Perhaps its easily defended against and countered... but that logic doesn't apply to any of the other banned techniques, why should Kirbyciding be an exception? Because it's "silly"?

Because I've seen people fall to Kirbyciding a lot (they aren't exactly pros) and to the victim it definitely stops being silly after the first or second time. Though everyone else laughs.

Also, this would have been bad in the single elimination Tourney, however, now that it's a Round Robin there are enough matches that it doesn't matter much.

And now at three minutes, it doesn't seem like there is much point in banning 'running away,' as it were, since Blank, you even said that it was a perfectly acceptable thing to do in the last 30-40 seconds of the match, and a New Pork City KO is going to take about 2 minutes anyway.

Everything's on medium right ? I really doubt Dragoon is going to pop up that much.

I don't see how any of the "Don't be a dick" rules prevent the non-dick from winning if not enforced. He's running away? Then go after him and beat his ass while he's trying to flee instead of defending himself.

The issue here is that on New Pork City and Hyrule Temple, catching the faster characters is impossible.

I've been trying to say that the whole time. :P I guess the problem is since almost no one has the new game here we can't take out our frustrations on other people's playstyles on the field so we have to do so on the forum with preemptive rules and such.

In a normal tournament this would be the case, but here items will be popping up all over the place and levels will be set to random (making large stages a 2/49 chance). It isn't terribly likely anyone will be able to hide for long.

Oh, a smart player should definitely be able to overcome something like that.

I'd just rather be safe than sorry really.

It's a tournament that isn't in person so chances are a few people will take advantage of that.

Also, Munkus, you raise a good point. I'm keeping the rule in, but it has a far less chance of being exploited now.

Well that's not an official date. So it could actually be much better, or far worse. So you can take comfort(?) in that.

Yeah because Smash Balls and Dragoons appear every five seconds on medium.

When I was unlocking things, I played a bunch of one stock matches. I would say 75% ended due to final smash or dragoon. The dragoon actually appears somewhat frequently - and unlike other items, it will keep appearing until it is used.

With three minutes - I can say that the dragoon and final smash WILL appear. If sonic gets the final smash, he will probably win the entire game.

The problem is Munkus's definition of a dick and Blankspace's definition of a dick are completely different, hence the complaining on one end and dictatorship on the other.

I expected either blankspace to say "Well you raise a good point, I guess we can ban one stage since that is excessive" or "I'm not banning that stage, so you can play how you want."

I didn't think he'd throw out the baby with the bathwater.

All this talk about the tournament and rules and arguments has made me never want to enter one of these tournaments ever. All these restrictions, the "Do this, don't do that, play here, don't play that" rules. I just want to play the game. And the picture that's being painted is one I want no part of.

Looking forward to just playing the game with a few people here. You tournament folk? Whew... have fun.

You know I would feel better if the person conducting the tournament knew what he was making rules about in the first place

Listen to yourselves, you guys. These rules are so ridiculous. The "casuals" have become the "serious".

Yeah, the thing is this tournament was designed for people like you (laid back, just want to play with other PAers) in the first place and it turned into something else with a quickness.

Haha - just what kind of picture is being painted? Though we're arguing about it now, the rules basically amount to "2 stock, 3 minutes, items on, don't run around on new pork city - the stage that no one will pick".
