TF2 Tournament: There Can Be Only One!...AGAIN!

edited October 2008 in Games and Technology
TOURNY TOURNY BO BURNY BANANA FANANA MO MURNY FEE FIE FO FURNY....TOURNY

A lot of this will be the same as the last tournament, but with a few updates to hopefully help it run better.

When: This is going to take place the week of September 29th to October 4th. If you are not available during the evenings that week, or in the middle of the day on Saturday then do not sign up. This schedule is concrete.

Rules (these will be strictly enforced):
  • 9 People per team
  • Class limits of 1 per class.
  • Crits will be turned off
  • Respawn timers will be normal
  • If someone doesn't show up you can bring in someone who is on the reserve list. If none of them can be found you can recruit someone who is not in the tournament.
  • You can have up to 2 people brought in if you are missing players. After that you have to play short. (eg. only 6 people on your team show up, you can bring in 2 extras for a total of 8).
  • We'll wait 15 minutes until after the scheduled time. Whatever your team composition is by then is what you play with.
  • If you lose a player during the match because of connection problems, they are allowed to return, but the match will continue unless we are between maps. If someone has to leave in the middle of a match, you will play down a player.
  • No rescheduling of matches. This will all take place over the course of a week. If you can't play during that week, don't sign up. If something comes up let me and at least one other person on your team know as soon as possible so they can look for an alternate.
  • There can only be official roster changes after the tournament has started if the sub has played all games on your team (eg. iowa doesn't show up the first game (because he's terrible) and you use a tyrannus to replace him. Iowa then says he can never play, you can officially add Tyrannus to your roster, so you're not constantly using one of your sub spots).
  • Teams will come to an agreement on what maps they will play during their match.
  • Medics, Pyros, and Heavies can use their alternate weapons

Maps:
I'm not including Dustbowl, Goldrush, or Badwater because they take forever to play and if we're holding both division matches in one night we need to keep this short.

GravelPit
Both teams will attack and defend once. There is no time limit for this map.

* The stopwatch format will be used to score this map. Each round, both teams will have the opportunity to attack and defend. If both teams are able to successfully capture all the points, the round will be given to the team who does so in the least amount of time. Teams should take a screenshot of the time remaining on the clock at the time of the last capture. The attacking team with the most time left on the clock at the end of the round wins. If the first team fails to capture C, then the second team only needs to capture A and B in less time. So if you're getting rolled and didn't win the last round put all your effort into holding them off at A or B rather than setting up C.

Well (CP), Granary, Badlands, Fastlane
First team to 4 points wins the match or highest score after 60 minutes.
In the event of a tie when the time expires they will play one more match to determine the winner.

Vent Information:
The PA Vent server info is:
address: 72.18.158.18
port: 3804
password (if needed): wang

Connect then scroll down until you see Game On: Source. There are subsections for the RED and BLU Teams for TF2.

See This thread for more information about where to get Vent and how to set it up.

Watching the matches:
I will be posting demos of the matches from spectator, and I'm sure at least a few of the players will be recording as well.

Job is going to have the server record a demo which hopefully means you can look through anybody's eyes.

Match Schedule: <-- READ THIS BEFORE SIGNING UP
We're going with a round-robin divisions method. East will have 3 teams and West will have 3 teams.
East1 vs. East2 - Monday (29th) 7:30pm Eastern
W1N vs. West2 - Monday (29th) 7:30pm Pacific

East1 vs. East3 - Tuesday (30th) 7:30pm Eastern
W1N vs. West3 - Tuesday (30th) 7:30pm Pacific

East2 vs. East3 - Wednesday (1st) 7:30pm Eastern
West2 vs. West3 - Wednesday (1st) 7:30pm Pacific

Each match will consist of 2 maps, so by the end of the matches on Wednesday a team can have a maximum of 4 points.

In the event of a tie, the two teams will play dustbowl. Winner of that goes onto the finals.

In the event of a three way tie, two teams will play dustbowl, and the third will play the winner on goldrush or badwater (their choice). A random number generator will choose which team doesn't have to play dustbowl.

Eastern tiebreaker will take place on Thursday (2nd), 7:30pm Eastern.
Western tiebreaker will take place on Friday (3rd), 7:30pm Pacific.

Final round takes place on Saturday, October 4th, 1pm, eastern.

CHANGES FROM LAST TIME:
  • We're going to have a real reserve system this time. If you don't make it into the signups or don't want to commit the time then signup as a reserve. This list will remain posted here and any teams looking for a substitute can refer to it.
  • (tentative until I figure out the pausing system) If you lose two or more players to connection problems we will pause the game until at least one returns. If you just lose one player the game continues on.
  • We're keeping the ability to choose classes. While the random class idea is fun, I think it should be something we do in the server on a regular night to goof around, not here, if we want this tournament to be reasonably competetive.

I dunno. I said no in the rules cause I really don't think we have enough people who want to play goofy forced random rules and I think even those who did like it would get tired of it after a few rounds. I mean, being forced into sniper or spy for a round is entertaining, but would you really want to play it for several hours if you're terrible at it?

I think it's an awesome idea and I think you should have a plugin/vote option for it so we can have some hilarious times on regular nights, but I don't think it's right for a tournament setting.

Hmm that is strange. You should atleast try and contact them and see if there is anything they can do, atleast for that week. SourceTV is cool, and the demo from it is as well, as you can watch it, and watch any player you want when watching the SourceTV demo. If People can't actually log into SourceTV, you should atleast have it download a demo so we can post it after each match.

Honestly its not on the provider side. The reality of the situation is that these servers are rented and each physical server is running multiple instances of the TF2 dedicated server. When you activate SourceTV you are increasing the CPU and network requirements for that box a great deal. I'm sure they have CPU and network throttling in place to make sure that one server instance does not step on the toes of another.

If this were a dedicated server I'm positive you could run SourceTV on it lag free. I'd love to have one but not for $400/month.

I will have the server do an STVdemo though.

As always my server is available, as well.

You may want to include tournament mode in the rules.
    • Once a team gets more points than another team, a win is declared
    • [Optional] If a team gets the same amount of points in less time than another team, a win is declared
    • While waiting to respawn, only first person view of team mates is available (so you can't see anything that a team mate can't see)

Let's be clear. Either you're signing up for the tournament or you're signing up to be a reserve. If you're playing, you're not a reserve.

Reserves are people who cannot play the entire tournament. They will not be assigned a team. They're just there as a list for teams who are looking for someone when they are missing a player.

I'm sorry man but you're using greater class restrictions then CAL and in my opinion draining all the fun out of this game.

I'd just like to hear your reasoning behind it considering you're like, you know, publicly asking people here in G&T to play with you under rather stringent rules.

Rules that, in my experience, draw out the worst in people.

Did you even witness the first tourney that had these exact rules? People loved it, and I believe Charley got a lot of praise for organizing it as well as she did.

Do we really need to have another Tourneyfag discussion about this? It's a different style of play for different kinds of people, I can totally understand why some people would much rather have 10 demos with crits on, but we're just not playing this tourney that way.

Edit: I believe the only drama that came out of it was that somebody who is known to be a good player wasn't able to show up to any of the matches he signed up for, and the team was left without their "all-star" but he was replaced with an "all-star" anyways, so things ended up working out.
