So, Guitar Hero. You probably know what that is, so I'll try to keep this brief.
Games that you can buy in stores RIGHT NOW
Guitar Hero
The original. Features include A HOPO system that does not work, ever, and some pretty bad covers.
Guitar Hero 2
Like the first one, but with HOPOs that human beings can reliably perform as well as a co-op mode. Also comes with a sweet red guitar.
Also there was a 360 version that came with a ridiculously tiny X-plorer that was impossible to play with. It had some extra songs and some DLC was avaible but none of it was all that great.
Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80's
The last Guitar Hero that Hamronix worked on, and only because they were contractually obligated to do so. It kinda sucked.
Guitar Hero: Three Note Chords
After Hamronix left, THPS developer Neversoft stepped in. they did not do a very good job. This entry in the series was the first to feature a soundtrack comprised (mostly) of master tracks, famous rock stars, and guitar battles. It is notable for trying way too hard to be hard in order to appeal to the Scorehero crowd, even go so far as to include Dragonforce (blech) in the game.
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
The first band-specific spinoff. Kinda forgettable, except for Joe Perry's abomination of a fretboard.
Guitar Hero: Wanker's Cramp
A DS edition that had a really goofy "guitar grip" that was rather painful to use. These things breed like rabbits. I think there's 5 of them now.
Noise That Can Be Interpreted As Music By A Wide Set Of Categories But Still Has To Be Played With Physical Instruments Game
The world's first COMPLETE BAND GAME. Even though POST REDACTED came out first. And did the whole full band schtick better anyway. And looked nicer. And had a better soundtrack. Well, at least WT has a nicer guitar (bar the "touch strip", which is about as useful as playing with your feet).
Guitar Hero: Ludicrously Difficult
Also known as Guitar Hero: Metallica. It did not sell well, despite being a pretty decent game.
Guitar Hero: SHits
Features "favorites" from previous games redone under the World Tour engine. Notable for it's horrifically awful note charts and generally low quality.
Zombie Hero 5
Featuring more dead people than you can shake a stick at, a confusing and somewhat disappointing soundtrack, mediocre visuals, and some questionable note charts. Also, buy it in September, and you get David Lee Roth's Ego Trip for free!
P.S- This game is actually pretty decent.
David Lee Roth's Ego Trip
Although it claims to be a Guitar Hero game about Van Halen, the suspicious lack of even one single song featuring the Red Rocker hints at a more sinister purpose. Also, David Lee Roth couldn't sing his way out of a wet paper bag and he looks like an old hobo with herpes.
DJ Hero
Yes, you can talk about DJ Hero in this thread. I played it at a party once but I think the turntable was broken. Oh well.
Oh and people say this game is pretty awesome. I wouldn't know. But they say so. I trust them, I guess.
Guitar Hero: Confusing Name
Band Hero, or Pop Hero? Who knows. Or cares? I don't. Has every song Taylor Swift has ever written, complete with footnotes detailing her incorrect references to famous literary works.
Games that you can buy sometime in the future
Guitar Hero: Red/Blue
Although not much is known at this time, early previews hint at it being an RPG rather than a rhythm game. Players will travel the world, collecting famous guitar players and fighting other managers for recording contracts. Players will need to buy both games in order to collect all the rock stars.
Pig Hero 6: WARRIORS OF RAWK
There are only three things you need to know about this game:
1. You can turn into a pig.
2. Turning into a pig increases your multiplier.
3. Dehumanized is actually buying this piece of shit.

Other stuff
Dear Wii owners: Want to rock out with your cocks out but can't find anyone to do it with?

Q: I heard that Activision has an exclusitivity deal with (artist)! Is it true?
A: Yes, if you're talking about Aerosmith, The Eagles, or Van Halen.
Also to be added to the OP -
FRETS ON FIRE.
For those who don't mind jumping around their den holding a keyboard as a guitar and are too poor to afford a proper unit, and/or do not own a console.
IMO, better than the PC versions of Guitar Hero (because the game actually runs) AND you can download
thousands (yes) of songs from almost any band, and if you can't find a song you like, you can MAKE IT YOURSELF.
Oh, and of course, all GH1, 2, and 3 songs are available.
Not so much an option on a laptop unless you have a wireless keyboard.
Q: I don't have any real life friends! What should I do?
A: Hit one of us up.

BwBW seems to be missing notes in the beginning.
EDIT: there's something about Judith's chart that seems really off to me.

- Will I be able to play drums, vocals if I buy the Guitar Hero 5 game?
- Can I buy older GH titles and use the other instruments (drums, vocals) with them?
My friend has rock band, and he's been able to download quite a few full almums - I've been a little underwhemed at the DLC for World tour. Or I dont know if there's any "backwards compatibility"
World tour is the only one with stuff other than guitars*, so you can use the newer guitars on older games, but there aren't any drum parts to play.
*except for Metallica

In fairness to the spin off games (which I enjoyed to some degree, but GH80's was definitely ropey), they were cheaper. At launch check GH: metallica (best spin off by a long shot) was €40 for just the disk, while games in general are €60-70.
Now that I look back, GH: 80's started the abuse of the 3 note chord, especially "what I like about you". It's almost like Harmonix set a deliberate bad example to the next developers on purpose, so we'd all start hating on that stuff. Well played. [/paranoia and sarcasm]
Overall, it's a sloppy spin off, while Metallica and Aerosmith games made a real effort, with band interviews, more animations, extras etc. The spin off games still have this reputation though, and I think it's complaints that "all this stuff could be DLC instead" that really fuels that.
But y'know my friends wanted to try GH: M, and I was just able to bring over the disk, instead of a console. At the same time, that's why I don't care for digital distribution and still get DVDs. Barely more effort to open a dvd case and pop it in, and if my friends want to see a movie and we're not going to be in my place that night, I can just pop it in my bag. Anecdotal and all that, but the extra effort of swapping a disk to play Metallica is offset for me by the convenience of bringing it to a friends house for a cheap entertaining friday night.

I remember when I had time to be good at games.

If you run FoFiX, which is pretty much a tweaked and perfected version, you can also use your drums and in some cases the mic. You can make it look like GH/RB too.
All the RB1 and 2 tracks are downloadable and people have put up loads of their own charts for other bands too.
Did Smash Hits use covers? Because if it's a master version of Stellar, that'd almost make it worth owning. I love that song, but GH1's cover was unbearably bad.
Also, Metallica's on sale at Kmart if anyone's interested. $39.99 PS360, $29.99 Wii(I think).

Honestly not that bad, really. And the presentation seems cleaned up from WT in a good way. New Star Power animation is awesome. The models are still ugly as sin, but at least they animate more fluidly now.
So, uh, GH5 is out in a couple days, I guess?
Yay, I get the net back tomorrow. But the day after that you guys get GH:5....
*Sighs* I just can't win. I've got a mic now though, so there's that. At least I can yell at you guys for ditching me with GH:5 using my voice now.
An RPG where the random battles were based around mini-rock offs? Oh man I'd pay through the nose for that.
I was going to use that really long name that you guys settled on (the one about instruments) but I didn't want to go through hundreds of pages to find it.
Maybe I should make the next OP when I'm not really tired...

I'll be getting GH5 in a couple days from preordering from Best Buy online, then I'll register for VH.

At least they got the importing songs from World Tour and Smash Hits thing right. Paying a small relicencing fee will be worth the saved shelf space.

Well, it's very hard to tell the difference in the quality of the notecharts between GH and Rock Band on medium.
By the way, I'd suggest trying hard... once you get it down, it's more fun. Well, when the notecharts don't suck, at least. Maybe on Rock Band first (you own that, right?); it's easier.
Yea, I figured on Medium the common complaints about GH wouldn't matter...but like I said usually I play it for fun, not really caring to work toward getting better for hard or expert. My wife is pretty awesome at the guitar on hard and expert though, depending on the song. She loves it.

That's the thing... I'm not on hard for bragging rights. When the songs are done right, playing on hard just feels better. I feel like I'm rocking out more to the song. It makes me feel more like a rock star rather than a dude hitting buttons. I'd absolutely suggest giving it a try and working through the adjustment period. It's loads of fun! Er, under optimal conditions, of course.
You need an instruction manual to play a game like this?
No I want the manual to maybe get GH: Van Halen for free by renting GH5.
Stay classy.
Will do!
I mean, I'd be kind of irritated if I got drawn into pre-ordering for a free game only to learn it has now turned into "just buy the fucking thing and we'll slap the code on the back of the manual."
