a 64-bit register is the same thing with double the switches, allowing you to create
2^64 = 1.84467441 × 10^19 numbers
thus when you have a 64-bit memory system, you can utilize a lot more memory at once

ages ago, everyone figured "pff, four gigabytes of memory? who's ever going to have that in a computer?" so most were built with a 32-bit structure. Switching to a 64-bit architecture means we won't have that problem again until people start making computers with more than 18 exabytes of memory or whatever they're called.
In 64 bit you have to create the individual strands of hair on Bubsy's ass. In 32 bits you just have to worry about giving him Bobcat attitude - in 64 bits you have to give him Bobcat attitude and rectal hair - it's much more difficult.
