Yeah, that's what we did last time. Anyone who wants to play tonight, or just join the group can friend me on Steam and I'll send an invite to the group.
Was pretty much a practice round for tomorrow; we got to about 1300 AD this time and Kias did....really well. They were getting El Dorado and other wonders and I had fish. Just going to have to focus on exploring earlier I suppose.
That was fun! Even without killing each other, actual negotiation for trading and open borders, along with general chat, made it a lot more involved. I am sure future games will be more aggressive as we get comfortable beating one another over the head for precious whales. There were also puns.
Yeah Im falling further and further behind. I think its because I made poor choices early game regarding science and now Im behind on learning things. Also I dont like to expand as much as SOME PEOPLE (cough kias) early game without there being something to expand into.
Also I need a new computer. But thats a whole other problem.

Before Tolerant showed up, we had a different game going where I should have been dead by turn 2.
I think it's pretty clear Kias is going to win by a pretty wide margin. He's got 50% more science that I do, and a lot more cities so I'm sure he could wipe me out without too much effort. I probably should have expanded more but I always run into happiness issues, and there weren't any more luxuries to expand into. Thought I'd try growing my original cities bigger for a change, though clearly it's not going to help.
I think the main reason for the lack of wars was the distance between our empires meant it was just easier to expand rather than conquer.
They pillaged my elephant square, which kept me from building an circus when I wanted too. Then before I could even get them killed and a worker to repair it another barb unit pillaged my gold mine. Just a bit of frustration and I ended up taking honor which I rarely do in single player anymore because they were such a nuisence.
Cant see this pic but yeah my capitol wanted whales as a quest and you were the only one who had them so I just wanted a quick trade and then move on to the next thing. I ended up settling a city close by to get a whale hex that was just out of reach. Figured it would help if one of you decided to invade later.
Which is kind of funny that no one started any wars except for me taking ediburgh. But they totally deserved it.

Fixed that whales image.
Anyway I'm not sure why I didn't bother trading the whales you that time, I blame the alcohol..
To be fair, I had a lot of luck at the start of that game. Finding El Dorado gives +500 gold, which was essentially a free settler on top of Freedom's freebie, and I found two unique luxuries to expand in to that covered the happiness cost of my new cities. Then I traded a lot of my extra luxuries with gold thrown in here and there with you all and my happiness was rarely a problem. I also started by several rivers, which are honestly just as good as resource squares, if not better.
It looks like my plans may be cancelled tonight. I have a few things I should do during the day, but if we get a game going later I will likely be able to join.

What would I do to get in on a fine game of Civilization? Do I need to be invited to a Steam group?
Also, do you guys play random Civs? Also much better than at release, I think they are still far from balanced. I don't want to just pick one of the powerhouses.

Send me a friend request on Steam and I can invite you to the group. You don't need to be in the group to play, but it does make setting up easier. We'll probably be starting a game in the next half hour or so, if you're interested.
I'm having a bit of a technical problem. The add a friend tool says that it's 'not available at this time.' If you have better luck, my steam handle is the same as my forum handle. Mind the '0,' not an 'o.'

I have a cake due out of the oven at approximately 4:30-4:40 est. If the start could be delayed 30 minutes until 5:00 I can make it for today's game. If not, no worries, and have fun

I'm having trouble with the friends thing too. Hopefully we can get you in the game regardless.

If we can't get you on someones friend list (will keep trying), the host can always make the game public and kick any pubs who join. This way you can just refresh the games page in civ 5 multiplayer and find us that way.
A bunch of us are already in the chat room, so if you're planning on joining go ahead and join the war room. We won't start till closer to 5, but at least we'll know who will be available.
So sorry guys, I ended up getting a crazy family-related phone call right before we were to get started. That ate up two hours of my time. Maybe next time.
We only got about 50 or so turns in (if that even I just got my second city) and the game crashed so a few left and the rest were going to start a nbew game.

So you didnt miss much!
Psht, you were the only one who left! We even had AI china in their annoying people in case you made it back! We also figured out what was slowing the game down, too many city states. We dropped the number down for the second go and it ran really smooth.
Anyhow, my book of grudges, oh it has two new names in it. Looking at you @TolerantZero and @heenato! Damn the allure of El Dorado!

So after our first game kinda pooped itself, we restarted with fewer city-states and it made a hell of a difference.
Anyway, i'm going to link a few screenshots, posting them in the thread would not be NSF56K-friendly.. And I don't mind at all if the other guys from the game look at these, don't think there's much advantage to be gained from it.

Screens of my crappy starting point (all desert), a "3 settler walk into El Dorado" joke, the war, and the anti-kias initiative (even the barbarians got a piece) that doomed the Ottomans:

4 civs in one continent, and a whole SLEW of cold wars between each other, not shown in the screenshots but there was a lot of vendetta.

That's it so far, this game is far far better when playing against real people. The way it's meant to be played really.
Hopefully it won't be too hard to get the same people back to finish off this game.
