For the cat of a non-geek non intellectual, I would recommend Whiskers or Biscuit, or Kate.
I don't know why Kate or Katie appeal to me as non-reference cat names. Now I want a tabby cat of my own to name Kate, to terrorize Rusalka and Kovacs.
We have a cat (female) named Fred, and another named Nina. A boy named Roscoe.
My parents had a dog named Alex, and they have a cat now named Lou (his brother was Bud, but died as a kitten).
