How will you be playing? Hardcore ladder is the way to go, really. If that's what we're doing, I would probably join in.

Edit: Rolo, it's still way too expensive for what it is. I couldn't find it anywhere for less than $30.

in hardcore, deaths are permanent, although your items can be looted from your corpse by someone you trust if they were in the game at the time

it is way more fun than softcore, and also there are far fewer retards and item dupers in HC

well, in softcore, it is actually the case that a retarded monkey could get through the game if it had enough time since there are no important punishments for failure

hardcore means it takes some thought and skill to get far, and also having your characters die every once in a while helps you not get bored so quickly by forcing you to start over, usually with something new

but it's not that hard not to die, really. it's not even an issue until you've beaten the game on the normal difficulty, because it only starts getting hard in nightmare (the second difficulty)

They give you special items and shit, and it's kind of nice to have death mean something in a videogame, for a change. It's certainly more exciting for players who have grown jaded on softcore.

Okay so this seems like fairly solid reasoning. But the last time I was playing d2 (which was a fucking long time ago) I would get these lag spikes where everybody would stop moving and then my guy would just die when it unlagged. That seems "bad" for hardcore. How do you stop this from occurring?

Well, if it was a really long time ago it may have been because Blizzard's servers were getting overworked, but now only a few thousand people play, probably. If it's on your side I don't really know what to say. Firewall issue? Forward your ports? I don't really know since that's never been an issue for me.
