Stale If I may make a suggestion Curves are generally a much more effective way of lightening and darkening parts fo the photo. Burn and Dodge is kinda sloppy.
As I posted these on Flying Stove but figure can't hurt to share em with you folks too
When I took these, there were two squad cars arresting these guys. By the time it was done there were eleven squad cars, two motorcycles and a ghetto bird. We had a full-blown situation on our hands.
This is going on literally across the street from our house.
And jesus christ, it looks like that camera has the Hubble mounted on it.
Thanks.
And yes, silly question about framing. So many ways.
The easiest is to flatten your layer, set your background color to whatever color you want the frame to be, expand the canvas by twice the width you want the border to be (make sure you are expand from the center).
Or you create a new layer, fill it with a color, use the selection tool to select everything except a few rows of pixels on each of the four edges, then delete.
See, expanding the canvas and filling bottom layers is what I've been doing this entire time for frames, I was just wondering if there was a more...automated way. I'm just lazy I guess
You can record your method as an action. That's what I did for my method (see the previous page, or maybe two back, for my method for making borders). But if you record it as an action then in the future you can do all the steps on any pic by just pression the "play" button on the action.
I was this afternoon so I decided I might go out and take a little walk. I took about 150 pictures and I think these turned out the best, though I has a few other's I'm waffling on whether or not I really like them.
These first two are pretty over exposed, but I like them nonetheless.
I thought this was pretty neat. A piece of bark caught between two pieces of spider web. It was shiny from the silk on one side and when it spun in the wind it look pretty cool.
I can't decide whether or not I like this shot as landscape or portrait. I think landscape is a wee bit more interesting looking
I thought the colors in this one turned out really well.
The whole hour and a half I was out shooting I was fussing with my f stop and shutter speed, trying adjust for the constant change in lighting. I'd say it was pretty good practice. Though working with a PnS was sort of a pain in the ass.
I like the first one a lot, saltiness. Where is this you were shooting?
noob question here but i'd like to know, how do you overlay all those snowboarding photos to create one? and those gaussian blur frames on them are great. 1,3,4 are my favorites.
Not an easy way, no, if you mean to make it a crisp distinction. I would mess with the Extract Filter or use the lasso tool, then invert the selection (if needed) and run a blur.
Otherwise, a general lasso, feather the selection, invert (again, if needed) and blur would give you a general distinction (but probly look poopy)...
Saltiness that booth picture is awesome. The contrast from the green ground to the blue in the sky is kickass, plus the booth just brings it all together.

Is there a simple way to blur the background out in photoshop while leaving the main subject in focus? My way seems tedious and very silly.
I don't think so. The way I did it was very tedious but it works which is just a lot of zooming and blurring evenly. It takes me like 20 minutes per photo (level, resize, crop, blur, channel mixer, etc.) thus I only pick a select few that I really like. Thats the con of a not-so-great camera, but until I have enough money and dedication to photography, I will continue my tedious methods. haha

I set my camera on burst mode, so it takes 4 pictures, one right after the other, within like 2-3 seconds. Then on photoshop, I just copy+paste and match it up the best I can, like a puzzle, and erase some parts accordingly so it matches the background. Then flatten visible layers, and do whatever you normally do to spice up the photos.
fear. they start going heel-side cuz they feel like they're going to fast. Then they just fall over and do a butt-slide. Fear is 90% of the reason people eat it while snowboarding and doing tricks.
anna: I the muffin pictures. Nice colors and it looks crazy delicious. so.. moist-looking...
Well an hour later and many burns on my hands. I finally got a decent one out of the bunch. Took me a while to find some ok settings (and to get the flame bright enough to light up my face).
I'm guessing it's that gel stuff you can coat your hands with and the fumes burn at a fairly low temperature, so you supposedly don't get burned in combination with the gel insulation and the the fact the fumes are burning, not the gel itself.

Nah, I just used a lighter. I just press the button down for about 7 seconds into my hand while I have a fist made with a little opening inside. Leave an opening by my thumb then spark it with the lighter. Once it lights I wait a sec. then open my hand real fast causing a tiny little ball of flame.
Edit: If you look kinda close you can see my fist and the spark and the little flame before I open my hand.
Do you remember the exposure on the second image burkhart? I think the lamp works better in it than in the first, where they seem a little too distracting. Second is nice though.
Agree with everyone about the bathroom Saltiness. The texture is just so disgustingly beautiful.

I like this a lot. Good catch!

The last thing I shot was this:
And it pales in comparison, as usual.

Speaking of frames, how do you guys go about framing your photos? Did you create PS action or something? ...Is this is a silly question...?

Seriously, it's not that hard.

Seriously, it takes like 4 seconds.
Actually, my action also saves the pic full-size, then scales it down to web-posting size, then adds the borders.

Stuff from yesterday..
Booth
Tower
Bathroom
Roommate
Gear self portrait
Myspace style self portrait
And once I get my hands on a scanner, I'll post my first B&W prints!

I probably should have made the width smaller.
yay snowboarding.
Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.

Tasty.

besides that, I'm kinda liking the noise on the keyboard. It gives it a nice texture.
That fire picture makes your hand look crazy. I don't know what's going on.
