I'm pretty sure all chars can cross train in all skills. My melee character has a few spells such as Heavy Soul Arrow and Homing Soul Mass in possession. Can't use them due to low int, but it's all there when the stats reach acceptable levels.
Also do these bosses souls make anything worth having? Had em in my inventory for a while. Got all up to the end of Anor Londo inc. Sif.
I think general consensus is that most of the boss soul weapons aren't all that great, or are mostly ng+ weapons. Quelaag's Fury Sword is good, and also the Greatshield of Artorias. However, there's a youtube clip floating around that shows the Great Sword of Artorias being the highest damage weapon in the game. I went ahead and forged the Dragonslayer Spear and the Great Sword of Artorias, but haven't been able to use them to due to stat requirements.
And one final one, is there a good place to farm large shards?
I stopped farming them once I got to Anor Londo. Instead, I engage in jolly co-op, escorting people and helping them beat Fatboy Slim, which also provides a lot of souls to fund my large shard addiction.
I only got to play Demon's Souls earlier this year, and while I played the hell out of it, not once was I ever successful in any multiplayer dealings. Finally picked this up, and it's really cool to be able to play while it's still going strong.
Just wandering around, minding my own business, and I get my very first invasion message. I'm starting to freak out a bit, but then I remember there were a whole mess of summon signs a little ways back. I call for one, and basically I'm just holding off this black phantom until backup arrives. Which it does, and we kick his ass. Then with buddy in tow, I explore a bit, find the gargoyle boss, and he helps me lay the smackdown on them.
Pretty damn exhilarating, and I never had any experience like that in the first game.

I'm not really sure how the multi works in demon's souls. I've thrown my blue rock down a few times in front of a boss door that I've beaten already thinking maybe some people want help and wondered around clearing the area for souls but nothing ever happened. Then if i step across into the boss area it says my sign has disappeared.
I know the multi in demon may be much less populated than the new shiny dark souls but I feel like something should have happened somewhere along the line.

I played mostly off line and maybe someone could answer better than I can. For someone to summon you, they have to be alive. It also has to do wtih which boss your doing and the area. Right infront of the door may not always be the best chance to get someone to summon you. Some times it's better to do it at the start of the level so the two of you can get to the boss alive.

My Gravelord is coming along nicely.
+3 GL sword, +4 BKS, +7 elite knights, working on the pyro glove now. Only bosses down are the Taurus Demon and Capra. I'm sure I'll get bored putting my symbol down outside the gargoyles in no time flat, but gives me something to do when not working on NG++ with my main.
I was helping someone when they were invaded by one of those guys that preys on lower level characters
he had the dragon king greataxe, wrath of the gods, and gravelord greatsword dance
just this constant barrage of area attacks
How effective is the gravelord greatsword dance in PvP? It doesn't have a faith requirement so it may be nice for my strength/melee char. I've never seen it in action.

It has quite a long cast time, about the same as heal. It's definitely not something you can cast mid melee, like wrath.

I was wondering as it's been a LONG time since I played this, but have they finally patched the game to make multiplayer connectivity more than a once in ten blue moons occasion? Thinking of picking this game up again as I've seen it cheap in a few places - but only if they've fixed the MP.
the bonus that dex provides is kind of small, anyway

The other bad thing about GLSD is that even though it has 40 uses, it uses them like fire whip for pyromancy. 40 uses only = about 2 casts, or 3, but the 3rd one is going to be very weak.
It's definitely not what I was envisioning when I thought about using it
@Aegeri - I don't invade others often, as I have shit luck with that, but co-op is fine.

I was thinking about picking up the guide book for this when I get back from France, but I read in the Amazon review that a recent patch made a lot of the information obsolete. Thoughts?
yeah, the guide is probably only a guide idea if you think you would appreciate it for reasons other than the information in it

The maps and most of the NPC info is still good
A lot of the weapon stats and spell effects changed so those parts are basically useless

Best way to go!
So after about 2hrs of farming (with occasional summons to fight Quelaag mixed in) I came out with 36 large shards and 98 Green shards from killing leeches.. I can definitely recommend them over the slimes in depths for shards.
Infact I would say that farming the greens there is even better than farming souls to buy the greens, especially if you need greens in bulk. If you only needed 10 or so, you could get lucky and get them in 1 run, but you might be better off farming souls to convert them to greens... but that would still be 50k souls.

50k souls is nothing.
I was running around with 3.2 million pvp souls for a while because I had nothing to spend them on.
that was pre-patch, and souls are WAY easier to come by now. 300k takes like ten minutes.

In NG, or NG+?
I'm not stressed about getting 50k, but for first time through the game 50k can seem daunting
Where are you getting 300k in ten mins? I know you can get 20k a min in NG+ from forest NPCs
edit: By the time I got around to actually completing NG+ my guy had around 10mil built up from farming and general play. I am already SL128 on him and didn't want to spend more on leveling..
Summoned up Solaire for my first run on Fatboy Slim, and happened to se a white sign so I called up some other help too, guy wielding what I think was a gargoyle halberd. It it might have been black knight, not sure since I've never seen one of those. Fatty died very fast; my halberd buddy roasted him with greater fireball, and. I saved my greater chaos fireball for super lightning spear guy. That super lightning ass smash is a bear, but the rest of the fight was pretty simple.
I kind of wish I hadn't called in help the first run. That leaves Stray and Taurus as still the only bosses I've had to try more than twice.

I had tons of trouble with Firesage the first time I came across him, you wouldn't have gotten to him yet seeing as you only just got lordvessel. He's easy now, but was a pain in the ass to get down first time or two.

But then you wouldn't have had such fun with jolly cooperation!
Also what are green shards used for, is it to ascend to magic or upgrade magic?
I mean, I read the notes, and I understand a little, but from a player's perspective, what's it all mean?
Generally, it made the game less grindy by giving you humanity more easily and a general boost in souls. More of the crafting materials are now sold too.
Equipment tweaks were largely to stop there being a "best" build for PVP.

green shards are used to ascend +5 normal weapons to divine, magic, or fire, and each one of those is only done by a certain blacksmith in the game
once you ascend it, however, you can reinforce it anywhere until it's time to ascend again

if only I didn't have to get past those knights every time

Do miracle cast times lower with an increase in dexterity like spell cast times do?

but... NG+ S&O are what, 150,000 all by themselves?
I should have spent those souls to get me up to nearly 200.. oh well. Nothing I can't get back eventually.
