We are dropping off the dog at my parents tonight so they can watch her for a few days while @Godmode and I go to PAX.

The last time my mother watched Mila for a few days I got this picture:

Mila has been chewing excessively at her back paw. I did my best to look between her toes, and it looks like she has a mosquito bite or something (though obviously I don't believe a mosquito got between her toes somehow). Is there a way to treat it easily? I just spent $400 on her teeth and would like to avoid another vet visit if possible.

My dog had his annual check up at the vet, and they had this muzzle sitting in the exam room. I'm not proud of it, but I've been imagining him as Bane since we got home.

Atrus has a corn on his pawpad.

    Hoooray for breed specific maladies.

We can hull it, or I can buy this newfangled 135 dollar gel...but the vet says it works well so I guess I'll try it. "Homeopathic oils." Nyyyeeerrrr....

Buy a tin of Bag Balm, the stuff farmers and workers put on their hands in cold, dry weather. It's like 9 bucks. Rub that on the corn, then cover with duct tape. It will eventually hull the corn, and it's cheap as hell. Once you get the corn out, use an over the counter cold sore anti-viral like Abreva. The corn will either never come back or if it does come back it will be much smaller.

Gotta agree with Hunter on this one, probably no need for $130 gels when folks have been dealing with similar issues with OTC methods for decades.

I and my more significant other have been wanting to get a Boston Terrier or a Westie Terrier. It's unfortunate that they are hard to find in the Southeast US. Does anyone have any experience owning these two breeds or would be able to recommend similar ones that are suitable for a small busy apartment. Prefer short haired or wiry as opposed to long haired.

    Not today.

So far, this vet has actually been AMAZING. He's very aware of greyhound specific ailments, and has had very good success with his other grey patients using this stuff. It's called Jack's Gel http://www.theartofmed.com/#!greyhounds/cyj, if anyone else wants to take a look. THe stuff actually sounds legit, except for the part when he says "homeopathic oils" and I'm like...look. Just call it what it is. if you just said "oil" or 'moisturizing agent' I'd be fine with it.

I've heard about using people stuff + duct tape, but that takes a long time and frequently comes back in greys. I'm not ruling it out, just curious.

While looking over the cable bill my husband noticed we were being charged about $13 a month for subcription to a.. hmmm.... male entertainment channel for males who like males. We were at a loss, because I did not order this channel, and he did not order this channel, so he called and canceled the channel.

We remained confused and joked to each other about it, saying that 'Oh, it must have been the cat!' And we laughed.

Then the cat knocked a remote off the table, jumped down on top of it, and the pay-per-view menu came up on the TV.

Apperently my cat either A: Likes gay porn, or B: Is especially adept at fucking with his people.

Collies with properly textured outer coat are actually really easy to keep clean! A quick couple minutes of brushing per dog is probably all it took if even that long to get them clean.

Speaking of Collies, we are getting another one!

Max passed his puppy kindergarten 2 class and is now certified as a puppy I guess. Well it's more for good manners, socialization, and eventually he'll get the dog good citizenship certificate which will go towards my wife using him as a therapy dog for her work. I guess that's pretty cool.

Max also has a girlfriend in his class. A Bernese Mountain Dog. She's a big gal, but a sweetheart.

    Max_May2014_c_zps311be343.jpg

He's also enjoying the warmer weather. He and his brother run around the yard, wrestle, play keep away with sticks, balls, frisbees, and their tug-of-war rope. Then they relax for like 5 minutes...then go crazy again.

Also, I saw this in the news the other night and immediately recognized the bark, body movements, the smile, and the tail wagging where it looks like the whole ass is moving. Of course it was a pair of Australian Cattle Dogs trained to help zoo keepers at the Pittsburgh Zoo to herd elephants of all things. They're not afraid of anything, in almost a scary ''you worry for their life sometimes'' kind of way. Watching this it could have easily been my two boys doing this. Best dags ever!

My wife used to do therapy visits with our dogs to nursing homes and a children's reading program, and now takes the dogs to visit residents at the agency she works for now that helps people with disabilities. She took them to meet some new people last week, and in one case, a man who the staff could normally never convince to go for a walk was more than happy to take Arwen for a walk, and he started using words that the staff hadn't ever heard from him before (his vocabulary was about 10-12 words normally, and gained 4-6 new ones during the visit)

We do Canine Good Neighbor (canadian equivalent to the american Canine Good Citizen) certifications on all our dogs normally, though it was definitely exciting to get the CGC on the dog that's been staying with us for the past year when my wife was at a show in MA last month. When she arrived here she was scared of everyone, and would barely approach me before running away for the first few weeks. I doubt she'd pass the more difficult Temperament Testing certification, but that she's come this far is fantastic.

Our dag decided to get in to the cat's litter box. Hopefully a round of emergency surgery has convinced her this is not a good idea.

We're making the cat box less accessible just in case she didn't learn.

    oh man

my dog got into the litterbox in a big way a few weeks ago, but thankfully no surgery was needed

it was the grossest thing I've had to deal with regarding my dogs
He wasn't after the poop, or at least didn't stop there. I found out what had happened because he came over and poked me with his nose, and I noticed some gray slime on it. when I rubbed it off, I noticed his gums were grey as well. and his teeth. and everything else in his mouth. he had tried to eat the wet kittly litter clumps and they had stuck to his mouth. I had to use toilet paper to literally scrape it off the roof of his mouth, wipe it out between his lip and his gums, under and on his tongue, and then ruin my toothbrush cleaning out the grooves where his canines/cuspids fit into the opposing gumline as they had filled with kittylitter as well. He was a trooper while I did all this, at least. He must not have successfully swallowed very much, and passed whatever he did swallow as he's been fine since, though we did keep a close watch on him for a few days after.

Huh. Had not heard of this before. Might have to buy a small bag for the folks, see if the cat will use it. Still going to make it so she can't get back there again. The cat box already had a cover with a door, but apparently she can get her head in there?

    Dag is stupidly determined sometimes.

    Kinda dag related story:
My friend Dave has greyhounds (such good dags!)
He took them out for a walk recently, didn't notice that he'd stepped in some dog poo. Got home, took his shoes off, getting some poo on his finger but still didn't notice. He noticed when he rubbed his cheek, leaving a small line of dog crap on his face, and could then smell it.

Dave is good for a laugh sometimes.
