The transition team has drafted a new document of Guiding Principles and New Rules for our community. These rules will go into effect on November 25. 2024.
i have ideas on that front regarding some of the setting conventions, and the more i think about it the more i don't want to just plop it right in the middle of the show's mythos, but definitely around it somehow

Well, my main thing is more narrative-inclined, in this regard - setting something in the Madoka universe (even outside the canon or timelines) still lends itself to this kind of awareness on the player's behalf of what is wrong with their status in-game (assuming a knowledge of the anime itself, here).
My preference would be to have a game with a different ruleset than they abided by in Madoka, in terms of soul gems, wishes, etc. We can still be aware of the uneasiness and questions that surround our power, of course! But it'd be cool if we didn't know the answers to those by virtue of watching Madoka.

Out of interest, Arc, have you looked at Magical Burst?
yeah i did when i first got this idea in my head as i am generally lazy and not one to try and reinvent the wheel
i found it to be a little too much crunch for my liking and sort of muddy in its design intent
figured i'd use mcdaldno's Simple World as a design template and sort of build from the ground up, starting simple with y'all, get feedback, suggestions, and hopefully even have you guys outright make some stuff, and layer on the complexity that way

Right, understandable. I think Burst had some good intentions, and there are various fan/chan projects to "fix" it, but it seemed like most of what I liked was the random tables
Building from Simple World seems like a good start
yeah there are some good things to appreciate - i may end up stealing using some of the opener questions and set up... the 13 oblivion seeds to grant a perfect wish is rather nice

Well, let me know if you'd like me to throw anything at you/together, despite my withering half-days of work and writing my PhD proposal, I still have time here and there to blabber about this stuff
so here's what i'm thinking, i rather like the idea of pursuing the wish as part of becoming a magical girl and fighting demons and acquiring their Demon Seeds
and thirteen seems like a damn fine number for wish granting
what do you all think? if we're on board with that we can start kicking around characters

Surprise me
Madoka Magica Spoilers:
I think I'm good with grimness right up until the whole "we fight monsters" thing becomes "Oh yeah, we are the monsters". Then for me it becomes a game of how long can you fight until you either become a monster or suicide, which while interesting, is maybe a little more angsty than I was hoping for with this game. I want magic and sparkles too!

I'd be down with the darkness implicit in a Madoka-style game as opposed to classic magical girl stuff! I agree with Ringo about preferring to go down a different pathway than the Madoka "twist" that Ringo refers to, in some ways - perhaps something dark about the nature of what they're fighting, or who they're fighting for, instead?
tomorrow being my day off I'm going to crystallize my ideas on setting.
@simonwolf@shock%20g@ringo@solar what playbooks do you guys want? sort out between each other what y'all want to play and answer me these questions:
what does your girl look like? how old is she? what's her personality like? why did Cherub select you (or why did you ask him) to become a Magical Girl and what's your wish when you collect your thirteenth Demon Seed?
feel free to collaborate on these answers and interconnect how you like.
Kira's a senior in high school, black hair down to her waist, copper eyes, willowy. She's a quiet sort, but willful. The kind of person that tends to go for forgiveness rather than permission. Loyal, mysterious, and alluring. She's in the school orchestra, on violin mostly, piano sometimes, and enjoys playing music a great deal. Hates math, though. Can't cram her brain into those tiny boring problems. She joins the Cause because she wanted to help people, because she wants more excitement, because she wants to feel human again. Tsunekawa is going to wish for love.
When Kira's out defending the ignorant her costume's a frilly lolita number. White and black, with bronze accents, subtle golden light, more bows than are entirely necessary. She wishes she could wear something practical, but you drive the car the company gives you. Her weapon's a gaff with a sturdy, dramatically curved hook. Meant for big fish.
also lastly I did some revising to the playbooks, it's starting to look much more like a game now

I think I will join Zandracon in spectating this one. You guys might want to check out Mai-hime if you want a different, less-dark-than-Madoka angle to work.

Miya Misen - Magical Warrior
15 year old sophomore, brash and impulsive, Miya is mostly concerned with fairness and equality in the world around her. She speaks up very loudly whenever she sees what she considers a victim of injustice. She hates bullies and the social cliques of high school, and is always looking for more ways to be inclusive of other people. Cherub approached Miya because of her penchant for defending the downtrodden without fear.
Miya is 5' 6", fair skinned, green-eyed, and has long red hair she keeps pulled into a ponytail tied with a red ribbon. Her Magical Girl costume is a red waistcoat with tails over a white dress. Her weapon is a large golden trident with jewels at the forks of the spear. (Can I have the trident points shoot out like harpoons with cables attached? Because I want that.)
From the Playbook:
I Got This
Weaponmaster
Stalwart Defender
Final Breaker
(I really wanted Bravado as well, but I can't pass up the other two )
Miya's chosen wish is to free her older brother from drug addiction.
Every magical girl has a motif associated with them, usually tied to their desires and hopes and dreams. For some girls it's an element like water or fire or wind, for others it's a concept like hope or music or time. What's yours?
And along that line, what are your special FX like? After all, you're Magical Girls. Are your attacks and powers subtle, or does pink light suffuse everything you do?
So we don't forget that you're still kids, what's your favorite subject? Least favorite?
I'll have more specific questions for each of you later when everyone has their sheets completed

So going in for the ridiculous, assuming Arc approves, I'm gonna name the Miya's trident Tora, and have it:
1) Shoot harpoon cables
2) Turn into an actual tiger that can attack independently
Motif: Let's go with flames
FX: Let's go with tigers made of fire
Favorite Subject: Drama
Least Favorite Subject: Geometry
Also, for Final Breaker, can my 'signature attack' just be an awesome attack the fits the given situation? For instance, versus one opponent a giant trident smash or for multiple foes, a thousand falling tridents falling from the sky? Basically I just want to Call My Shot and have something different and awesome happen depending on what I yell.
Chikako is clever and cunning. And she likes to show it! Though she isn't unpleasant, Chikako loves to play devious tricks on others. She has a good sense of humour, dislikes people who are stodgy and difficult, but like those who are kind, selfless and dedicated, even if they do lack a sense of humour! Chikako is 5' 4", has short hair with a dyed purple streak, and tends to wear jackets with plenty of pockets over her slightly rumpled schoolgirl uniform. She's pretty badass and a lot of fun to be around.
As a Magical Girl, Chikako wears a black and purple short dress and boots, with various different crystals on the bodice, shoulders and hems (think kind of like Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld). Her weapon is a spear with a gold-tinted diamond tip. It can fire laser beams, summon crystal golems and create geometric shields of energy. Amongst other things.
Her anima is a complex geometric puzzle filled with equations and mathematics. She likes maths. Who you callin' a nerd?!?
Okay also since y'all are coming up with special powers for your weapons and stuff I'd like to work with you guys to come up with some custom moves for em
