Is there a list of animals that actually smile like humans?
I see pictures that are cute because it looks like they're smiling, but in the back of my head I worry that that's the animal's expression for severe discomfort or anger

I know Dalmatians show happiness and excitement by baring their teeth
My parents one dog growls like she's about to rip your face off... but what she actually wants is head scratching. If you ignore she goes away and tries someone else.
Our dog smiles which I think is a learned thing from being around humans for a awhile. She's kinda old.
I learned in school that smiling being a good thing was a learned thing in humans too. That we only think smiling is good because our parents are always smiling at us when we are young. I dunno how true that is though.
So my little puppy Sprocket jumped up on me while I was talking with @DirtyDirtyVagrant over messenger and decided to shove my headphone cord, arm and everything else out of the way so he could cuddle up next to me and see what I was looking at.

In basically all other breeds of dog it's a sign of aggression, though
Nah. Lots and lots of breeds do this. I had a mutt that was a German Shepherd and Malamute(we think) mix, and she did that all the time when she was happily greeting me when I came home. I've heard it's a submissive thing rather than [something learned from humans or something that only certain breeds do].
My friend's (also very submissive) miniature rat terrier also did this.

My border collie bares his teeth in what looks like a snarl when we're playing fetch and he's intensely focused on the ball

Then he fell asleep because I'm boring.
